View Full Version : Football Clinton Portis retire

The Washington Redskins will stage an official retirement press conference for former RB Clinton Portis on Thursday afternoon.

Drafted in the second round by the Denver Broncos in 2002, he played nine pro seasons, the last in 2010, and fell 77 rushing yards shy of the 10,000-yard plateau (but Portis ranks as the NFL's 27th all-time ground gainer)

In seven years with the Redskins, Portis ran for 6,824 yards, 649 short of his goal of surpassing John Riggins' franchise record

He received Pro Bowl recognition just twice, often overshadowed by players like LaDainian Tomlinson, Shaun Alexander, Tiki Barber and Priest Holmes

But even if Portis won't make the Hall of Fame, he leaves a largely admirable legacy.

He wasn't the biggest or strongest guy, yet he managed to exceed 1,200 yards on the ground six times and was an excellent receiver and tenacious blocker. He was also tough, frequently playing hurt and making his money between the tackles in Washington even if his game may have been best suited for the cutback approach.

Sure, he'll also be widely remembered for his off-the-wall locker room costumes and sometimes head-scratching quotes.

But we'd bet many teams today would prefer to have Clinton Portis in his prime over what they currently feature in their backfield.

He was a weird case. I never thought he was that good, but he was generally pretty productive. At least, until he suddenly dropped off the cliff in production. He went from 60 to 0 pretty fast.

Who cares if he's retiring. He had one good season and then nothing great. He was good at best and that's being nice.

Based off his years in Denver, he deserves to be inducted in the HoF. /Knowmo

Just looked up his stats. He had 6 really good seasons. Better than I thought.

Ironically, better stats than Terrel Davis.....not quite as dominating as that though.

Portis is the best back Denver has seen in at least 30 years.

One time I went to a Denver vs SD game in SD.

Clinton Portis had 99 yards at the end of the 1st quarter and I'm convinced he would have broken 300 that day if he didn't get injured at the end of the 1st quarter. Probably up there with some of LT's best games as most dominating rushing performance I've seen in person.

CoMoChief

He did get about half of his career-long production against Vermeil's Chiefs.

I've never seen a defense get shredded so bad in run defense than when I watched Portis against DV's Chiefs.

And it absolutely made me fucking sick.

Don't forget Mushmouth Sharpe going full on bonkers against G-Rob's D, either.

How did that man ever get a job in football, anyway?

Eh, not by a wide margin, neither team has done significantly better than the other since the deal was made.

Denver got Champ Bailey, a 12 time pro bowl CB who is still playing at a high level, plus a #2 draft pick. Shanny did a lot of bone headed stuff but he definitely did well on this trade IMHO.

Meh. How many of those pro bowls are earned? He keeps getting picked, but he isn't even top 10 in the AFC anymore. He's going based solely off of his name.

He's a great CB and he will be a first ballot HoF entry. I mean, what else can be said about Champ? That pretty much says it all.

Hopefully the Belt will be on display.

I like to think that Belt got him run out of Denver. Unfortunately that has meant we have had to face off against Champ Bailey in our division for last several years. I was glad when Portis left the Broncos, but Champ has been no chump.

Portis might have broken records in Dick's offense along with that offensive line.

08-21-2012, 11:54 PM
He had a good career, and although he played for my second most hated rival for a period, I will never forget him injuring himself to stop a pick six (or maybe it was a fumble recovery?) by laying someone out and breaking his collarbone for his team...

Most RBs don't have the balls to do that

Yeah, he was. And he was capable of running between the tackles but they ran him into the dirt.

Once he was coached up a bit, Portis showed great vision, body control, acceleration and top speed. The Redskins didn't really use him well. He was never really a "power back" but they would put FB's and pulling Guards in front of him. Stupid.

But looking at the success of the overall teams, both teams have made it to a conference championship since the trades, (Coincidentally, this was over the same year.) Portis stayed surprisingly productive in many of his last years with the Skins.
