It likely puts Daniels in as our full time backup safety. Which... isn't good. He needs to be backing up the CBs.

@ pr_capone. Yeah man I have no idea why either Hillis or Charles have to be alone back there. I think it's retarded. If Cassel is in Shotgun put Charles on the right and Hillis on the left of him everytime. And under center just put Hillis in offset and Charles behind Cassel. LBs would have to stay at home and that leaves 5+ yards open for Cassel to throw to his 6'2" and 6'4" WRs. I'm just saying.

I bet we were separated at birth.

This has been my position since we signed Hillis. It should happen, there is not a single reason why it shouldn't. If you insist on having a WB that can only throw that 5-10 yard pass with consistency... then open that lane up for him.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/union-approves-ir-rule-change-161621213--nfl.html

Under the new rule, one ''marquee'' player'' placed on injured reserve will be able to return to practice after the sixth week of the schedule and to the lineup after the eighth week. That player must be on the 53-man roster after the final preseason cut, which comes Friday. The player's injury must be one that prevents him from practicing or playing football for six weeks.

Chiefs try out DT Shaun Smith
August, 30, 2012
By Bill Williamson | ESPN.com

The Kansas City Chiefs tried out defensive tackle Shaun Smith on Tuesday.

Smith, who was cut by Tennessee last week, played for the Chiefs and Romeo Crennel during the 2010 season. He has played for Crennel in 2007 and 2008 while in Cleveland.

If signed Smith would join the defensive tackle rotation. If he is not signed before the Sept. 9 season opener the Chiefs could add Smith to their roster with a non-guaranteed, one-year contract.

Wondering if some of these guys aren't hanging around while we try to lure in better talent. I could see both Reeves and O'Connell out if we found a decent interior lineman on the waiver wire.

Also, Hali doesn't count week one, son after that game, we'll have to lose one more guy, I can see us holding onto Eachus long enough for everyone to fill their practice squad, then trying to slip him through to ours.

Special teams. Gordon ain't gonna be on any punt or kick coverage units and they have Toribio, Powe and Poe. Toribio and Poe can kick over to the DE spot if needed.

O'Connell gives them a solid special teams player.

Keeping Gordon and cutting O'Connell gives this team absolutely nothing.

Most significant move: I found it interesting that defensive tackle Amon Gordon was cut. Gordon is solid, but far from special. But it could open a spot for Shaun Smith. Smith, who was recently cut by the Titans, tried out for the Chiefs on Tuesday. He played for Romeo Crennel in both Cleveland and in Kansas City. Smith could be added to a defensive-tackle group that includes first-round pick Dontari Poe, Anthony Toribio and Jerrell Powe. It was also significant that rookie defensive back DeQuan Menzie was put on injured reserve. The Chiefs have a lot of injuries in the secondary (they also cut veteran Donald Washington) and will need to do something. Young running backs Cyrus Gray, Nate Eachus and Shaun Draughn all made the team, giving Kansas City some intriguing youth in the backfield. Interestingly, the Chiefs kept five tailbacks, but no fullbacks. What does it mean? The will be doing a lot of multiple-tight-end and -receiver sets. It’d also be nice to see Jamaal Charles and Peyton Hillis share a backfield on occasion.

Onward and upward: The Chiefs cut rookie receivers Junior Hemingway and Josh Bellamy. The Chiefs like both of those players, but they are deep at the position. Both should be headed to the practice squad. As expected, second-year quarterback Ricky Stanzi made the team. He will be the No. 3 quarterback and given another chance to develop. Defensive lineman Jerome Long, a draft pick, could also be headed to the practice squad.

What’s next: Whether or not the Chiefs sign Smith (doing so after Week 1 would avoid guaranteeing his 2012 contract), I think they could add to the defensive line. I think they certainly will look at help for the secondary because of injuries, and if the right linebacker becomes available, the Chiefs could add some depth. I also think the offensive line might be an area in which Kansas City looks for depth -- it has been trying to add a veteran all summer. One name to keep an eye on is former New England offensive lineman Dan Koppen. He has a history with Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli.

Tanney to the IR is a good thing TBH. If Stanzi fails to gain any ground, Tanney will be waiting in the wings to snatch the coveted QB3 spot.

Better than Ricky

Gotta get this guy signed.

Do you know anything?

Do you follow this process at all?

Do you know what the Practice Squad is?

You just repeat what you've read.

The fact is if Pioli would have used those picks to move up and get a guy like Brandon Taylor he sure as **** wouldn't be on the practice squad.

If his college coach didn't want him, I don't know why we would.

Another fact is every team is going to have at least one draft pick that was just cut outright, or end up on their practice squad.

Again. Find something else to bash Pioli with.

Like, Jake O'Connell. Why is this motherfucker on the roster again?

This may be true, but we're loaded at TE, not DB.

Yes, a thousand times yes. Use them like Alstott and Dunn.

You know, I've been saying other than the fact that we run a 3-4, and they ran the Tampa 2, our Talent is very similar to those Bucs teams.
Johnson=Cassel
Charles>Dunn
Hillis=Alstot
D. Johnson=D. Brooks
R. Barber=B. Flowers
T. Hali=Simeon Rice
Berry=Lynch
If Poe turns out Great, he could be our Sapp(I understand that their roles are MUCH different, but they are still the Big bodies)

Again, I AM NOT saying we're a carbon copy, just that we have some similar pieces.

I thought Gordon was a lot more consistent than Pitoitua. Pitoitua flashed, but wasn't solid enough vs the run for me.

So packaging two picks to move up and grab a guy who would be on our roster right now isn't better than using the picks on two guys who we MIGHT decide to put on our practice squad?

You really are on cock stroker. Pioli and Cassel can do no wrong in your eyes. Unless you can be objective, go post on a Patriots board...

I look for Smith to sign very soon and Pitoitua gets cut.

Wouldn't be opposed to it, provided Smith can somehow get into shape this season.

.Hindsight is 50/50.
This is really a stretch. Think about it.

At the time they were drafted, did you know they wouldn't make the active roster?

How do you even know such a trade can even be made?

I agree with you that having Taylor would have been better than the two 7 rounders on PS. BUT, how are you so sure that such a draft strategy was available?

BTW, what round did Taylor go in?

No, dumbass, that's not the problem, and it has nothing to do with Pioli. Not every draft pick is going to hit. Not only that, but neither you nor Billay was privy to the machinations going on in the draft room, so you don't know if this was even possible. You'd have needed to find a GM willing to trade his 3rd for a pair of 7ths. I can't think of too many who'd have been jumping at the opportunity to do that.

To be fair I think Billay was talking more about trading the two 7s to move up in the 3rd.

To be fair I think Billay was talking more about trading the two 7s to move up in the 3rd.

That would have required the loss of Stephenson, who did not end up on the practice squad. Stephenson went at #11 in the 3rd, and Taylor went at #10. So, assuming the Chiefs could have moved up to draft Taylor (and assuming that they didn't stay at #11 thinking he'd make it there), the lowest likely cost would have been the #3 and one of the #7s. So, even if that's what Billay meant, he's still a Billay for not figuring out that it would not just have been the loss of two 7th rounders who ended up on the practice squad.
