View Full Version : Chiefs I'm Worried About Ryan Succop

His missed FG yesterday completely changed the tone of the game. We were about to tie the game up- and then completely fell apart. Am I ready to give up on Succop? Not yet. But he still worries me. What do you guys think?

I say had he made that kick we stay in the game longer and therefore have a better chance of winning.

He's JAG. Don't expect him to do much beyond hit XPs and make non pressure FGs 35 yards or closer.

Well, he's certainly not Mr. Automatic.

I'm not WORRIED about him, but he certainly doesn't have my full faith. He's a JAG at kicker.

Throw it on the pile. We'll get to it after:

Starting cornerback
starting safety
defensive line (again)
Jon Baldwin
head coach
defensive coordinator

and, oh yeah...

Quarterback.

Succop clanged the last kick just under the wind streamer on the upright... Which was totally stationary.

No shit. Our defense couldn't make a single stop for over 3 quarters of play, and everybody acts like a kicker missing a 41 yarder was the death knell...

He is a concern. He wasn't reliable in preseason either. Looks as though his kickoffs are stronger this year so I wonder if he put on some muscle and he lost his accuracy.

Honestly, there was a big problem prior to that kick anyway. The ball got moved and the refs were huddling. Not sure what happened but there was an obvious problem.

He still should have made it but the idea that it's some kind of huge game-changing event is kind of insulting.

Im worried about him because i have zero confidence in his ability to hit anything over 40 when the game is truly on the line.

Other than that, hes problem number 108 on a list of about 110 problems with this team.

It's a dynamic game requiring lots of reaction and adjustment. Things aren't going to go as planned, and you have to expect as much. Good teams adjust. Shitty teams make excuses for why they didn't adjust when they needed to.

Yup.

He's as replaceable as a kicker gets. We got rid of Conner Barth for him and he's essentially another Conner Barth.

He's an average kicker. Maybe a little bit better, maybe a little bit worse. The only reason there's any real 'shine' to him is that he's the only 'value' player that the abortion of a 2009 draft produced.

He's someone that we should look to improve on every off-season as he's just another kicker. Figures that he'd get a long-term extension instead...

Looked pretty windy out there to me. I'm not to worried about it.

Not at field level.

The flags above the stadium were swirling, but the streamers at the top of the uprights were deal level. He was also on the easy hash for a nice easy push through the uprights.

He had no excuses for missing that kick; it was one that a good kicker hits 90+ percent of the time.

But he's not a good kicker. Nor is he an awful one. He's just another kicker.

No it didn't - he just sliced it.

The streamers were laying flat against the uprights. Sitting on the left hash as a right-footed kicker created an almost ideal kicking environment for him.

He just yacked it.

He's 22nd among active kickers in the NFL in lifetime FG%.

Being in the bottom 1/3 of the league at your job means you should probably not be untouchable.

The Chiefs could do better than Ryan Succop quite easily. There are better kickers that switch teams every single season and most of them do so for nominal raises at best.

The Chiefs should constantly have an eye towards improving anywhere that they have an average or below player starting for them. Kicker is one of those positions. Should they use significant assets trying to replace him? No - he's a credible option and tolerable enough. But if I thought this team would ever actually win something, I damn sure wouldn't be comfortable with him as a guy taking a critical kick.

Wow...gale force winds right there. You know those streamers are essentially tissue paper, correct? That kind of movement is a 'breeze' at best. And a football with any velocity on it that is hit true is going to have more than enough energy to knife through that 5 mph hurricane with ease.

It was calm inside that stadium. Mister irrelevant just shanked it.

if he is "essentially" another Connor Barth he would be the current most accurate kicker in the league. Because Barth was the most accurate kicker in the league last season. And that makes him one of the best kickers in the league. not an "average" kicker

Barth hit 26/28 last year to lead the league. The season before that he hit 23 of 28 and the season before that he hit 14/19.

He had a great year in 2011, an average year in 2010 and a bad year in 2009. The trend is positive, but to date he hasn't exactly made a lot of pressure kicks and he's kicking in a decent environment.

Sample sizes make looking at a single season an unreliable indicator of a kicker's skill. If he does it for another season, you may be onto something. Right now though, he's just another decent kicker.

I'm not going to get bent out of shape over cutting him for Succop, though it does pretty much take any bloom out of that draft pick's rose. At best, Succop was a lateral move.

that's still more than average if you go from 82 percent to 92 percent in a season

and then out of the gate this season show you can continue the trend by going 3/3 in his first game. He's more than average he is one of the better kickers in the league. And Fat Scott flat out cut him. Like he did Jason Babin. like he did Wade Smith. Because Fat Scott is an overrated fat piece of shit GM idiot

I've never seen a kicker slice a kick like that in near perfect conditions. That being said, the play was rushed, and I don't think the snap was all that great.

There are better kickers out there, and worse kickers. I'm more worried about getting the D shored up at this particular moment, though.

That said, I think every year we should bring in meaningful competition for him via draft or FA until someone outperforms him. But like someone said, he is near the bottom of this team's problems.

Like I said - he's just another kicker.

He'll make some, he'll miss some. My memory says he misses more critical kicks than he makes but his aggregate numbers are tolerable.

But there's absolutely no reason why this isn't a guy we shouldn't be looking to upgrade. He doesn't have a plus leg, his intermediate accuracy is average at best and he's not a kickoff ace.

He's just another kicker. He's neither an asset nor is he a liability.
