This idea came from another CP poster and his recent thread asking about all the sports stadiums we have attended in our life. Once I posted all the stadiums, I was surprised at how many and thought the same about all the celebrities I have met in my lifetime.

The only “rule” is you must have had some interaction, no matter how small. Seeing someone in a restaurant from 100 feet away or a celebrity in a car next to you as you pass means nothing. High fiving a celebrity as they walk into the tunnel or shouting at them also doesn’t count. Going to a concert or show without meeting them personally means jack squat unless you went backstage and did them.

A photo with them does.

So here goes my list and it’s pretty damn long…..

Sports
• Howard Cosell-legendary sportscaster-on the street in New York with my Dad. He was all alone and smoking a cigar. Real nice and much taller and intimidating in person. Small chit chat
• Pele-soccer legend-on plane with me back from Rio de Janeiro Brazil-he was wearing a white fur coat in Miami, getting into a big white caddy limo with two hot white chicks. I guess he really loved white-I only talked to him for a minute and he was very hard to understand with his accent plus I think he was a little tipsy from drinking
• Walt Frazier-New York Knicks-on the way back from concessions at Madison Square Garden-he was as cool as his persona and talked to everyone-he was also wearing a fur coat just like Pele
• Henry Bibby-Philadelphia Sixers and Mike Bibby’s dad-was my camp counselor and coach at Pocono Invitational Basketball Camp
• Elvin Hayes-Washington Bullets-asshole that refused my autograph when I was only 14 years old and he was my idol. I waited after the Nets/Bullets games at Brendon Byrne Arena (now Continental), he came out into the arena with Jan van Breda Kolff of the Nets and passed me going out and returning, spoke and told me he didn’t have time when no one else around. My father was so pissed at me for making him wait for an extra hour after the game ended.
• Darryl Dawkins-Philadelphia Sixers-spent a week with him and his second wife in Italy. Know his father-in-law. My father and sister loved him when he came to my house for a party and started telling stories. One of the funniest and nicest people I know.
• Mark Collins-KC Chiefs and NY Giants-friends with my bartender buddy at the Jersey Shore. The guy was ripped and built like a brick shit house. Very quiet and shy guy. Doesn’t talk much.
• Phil Villapiano-NFL Oakland Raiders-met at airport when both on standby and we became friends over 20 years ago-talked to him this past week. We bet a 6 pack of Heineken on each Chiefs/Raiders game. Super nice and very positive attitude guy. Never negative.
• Tony Kline-Oakland Raiders-came to my house with Phil one time to talk about a business venture he was trying to grow. His son Tony Cline Jr played TE at Stanford and in the NFL 4 yrs
• Ben Davidson, Otis Sistrunk, Conrad Dobler, Dave Casper, and Sean Landetta-Oakland Raiders, St Louis Cardinals and NY Giants-met them all when Phil Villapiano brought them to dinner at a restaurant where we all met. Otis Sistrunk likes Wild Turkey and I got the chance to tell Ben Davidson that he was the reason I starting hating the Raiders. Dave Casper got hammered and Sean Landetta got called to play for the Eagles while at dinner
• Ronnie Lott-San Jose Airport-I remember this like it was yesterday-I took a lot of weekend trips out of SJ airport at 10pm on Friday nights while I lived in Silicon Valley-I was leaving for Scottsdale and Lott was sitting there dressed super sharp in nice slacks and shirt all by himself and NO ONE was talking to him or looking at him. I couldn’t figure out why. I chatted him up for about 10 minutes and he was very nice. Still can’t figure out how no one knew who he was or why no one bothered to talk to him.
• Alex Blackwell-NBA LA Lakers-friend from NJ
• Paul Azinger-professional golfer-one of the biggest dolts I ever met and a real jackass. I was at a trade show in Orlando Florida and I had the morning off-went to Grand Cypress golf course to play a quick 18 holes. Once done I went into the grill room to eat-while there Azinger and his dad came in. When I finished eating I went over to his table and shook his hand telling him, “Congratulations on your fight against cancer and I’m terribly sorry about the loss of your friend Payne Stewart.” The jerkoff just looked at me like I had three heads and said nothing-not a thank you, not a that was nice of you, nothing. I walked away wanting to punch him in the face and I hope to this day that his cancer comes back. Another buddy of mine had another bad experience with him on a driving range during a practice round. Guy seems like a real jerkoff.
• John Franco-New York Mets-after dinner with his family in New York, very nice guy
• Ed Kranepool-NY Mets-speaker at Little League dinner-autograph and small hello
• Scott Skiles Milwaukee Bucks coach-Robert Horry Houston Rockets/LA Lakers plus 15 NBA bench warmers-celebrity golf tournament in NJ for a sports agent’s charity-talked to all of them and not any real standout. Skiles was arrogant asshole. Horry nice but get to talk to him that much.
• Wade Boggs, Spike Owen, and Marty Barrett-Boston Red Sox-this was one of the most shocking encounters for two reasons; first they showed up to the nightclub Heartbreak the night Game 7 of the ’86 World Series was rained out and second, I fixed Wade Boggs up with the hot blonde girl my buddy and I were dancing with. My buddy has never forgiven me for this. Wade Boggs said about two whole words and was wearing an ugly red velour shirt. Spike Owen was a blast and bought us drinks a few times-they were all drinking Rolling Rock. We picked up a hooker on the way home in the limo.
• Bill Bradley-NY Knicks and NJ Senator-at Walt Disney with my family back in the mid 70’s-he and his wife and kid on the tram from the parking lot. He is 6’6” and has a deep voice with slow cadence. Nice guy but a true politician
• Mike Montgomery-Stanford basketball coach + other 20 West Coast college basketball coaches -Cable Car Classic golf tournament at Pasatiempo in Santa Cruz CA-nice guy-spoke a lot of motivation stories and golf courses he played in the Bay Area. Small interaction
• Allen Hopkins-professional pool player-at public golf course in NJ a few months in a row-he was out hustling golfers-he had a million different bar bets-a real shark. Famous player along with Steve Mizerak of Miller Lite beer commercial fame
• Bill Patrick-sportscaster for NHL hockey, PGA Golf on TNT, and other sporting events. In 1987 I went to with an ex-girlfriend and the group Seal Watch up to the Prince Edward Island then out into the North Atlantic on helicopter to see the baby harp seals to protect them from hunters. Bill Patrick and his first wife Suzy were on the trip and we all hung out together. Nice guy.
• Bill Cowher-Pittsburgh Steelers ex-coach. Met him July 13th in Pittsburgh at the Fairmont Hotel when I was checking in for a Pirates game. He was doing an interview with a local TV station and he was very nice. In great shape and looked like life is treating him well in retirement. Didn't seem like he was in any hurry to come back to coaching.
• Ray Knight-Mets player and now TV commentator for the Nats. spoke to him briefly before the Nats-Prates game a few weeks back. Told him about my 1986 World Series story and meeting several ex-Mets. Polite but very rushed prior to pregame TV prep.

Music
• Jellybean Benitez and Madonna-before she was famous in 1980 or 1981. A buddy, who is a well known DJ, took me to New York for a record pool meeting. He still DJ’s at Studio 54 and on Sirius radio. A bunch of DJ’s get together to listen to new music and exchange mixed tapes. Jellybean is a great DJ/producer and Madonna was with him as they were dating at the time. I vaguely remember her bopping around while we all listened to music. She didn’t sing or really talk. She looked cute. Little interaction
• Skid Row-Rock Band-Neighbor was friends with band and they lived nearby-saw during practice
• Danny Clinch-Famous Music Photographer-from school

Movies/TV/News
• Lorenzo Lamas-actor-with his dog sitting in the lobby at the Universal Hilton in LA reading a script. Talked to him for a while about Admiral Farragut school he attended in New Jersey. I had friends who attended from my neighborhood and it was in the next town we grew up in.
• Captain Kangaroo-actor Bob Keeshan TV child’s program-at the lobby bar at Universal Hilton in LA-talked to him for an hour and bought him a vodka on the rocks-he likes Stolichnaya
• Carol Alt-Supermodel-in the elevator at Universal Hilton in LA with another super hot women I didn’t recognize. She was super tall with heels and gorgeous in real life. I cracked a joke about the two of them and a cute short guy, they both laughed and they said they were going to Sylvestor Stallone’s house for a party.
• Jason Hervey-actor-The Wonder Years-played Wayne the older brother-at the Universal Hilton in LA-he was a douche and pompous ass for such a young guy with first real job-with a bunch of young ugly women groupies-he’s been in nothing since and I can see why.
• Joe Pesci-Shore Oaks Country Club-in the grill room-we were both members and have some common acquaintances. He is gruff in person just like on camera. LOVES GOLF.
• Donald Trump-(twice)-first time in Atlantic City when he was walking through his first brand new casino Trump Plaza with first wife Ivana. I stopped them, shock his hand, and wished them good luck and success with their new casino. He chatted with me for about 5 minutes asking lots of questions. Very nice-his wife Ivana not so much. Second time was in New York at Trump Towers getting off the elevator. I reminded him of the first time I met him and he said he remembered and we chatted for a few minutes-very engaging guy. Likes to know what people think and why they came to his properties.
• Robin Leach-Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous-I was in Las Vegas for the Comdex trade show and he was filming a tourism commercial for Las Vegas inside the Venetian hotel in front of the fountain. With a few drinks in me and a few co-workers egging me on, I jumped in front of the camera while he was filming and shouted with an English accent “Welcome to Lifestyles of the Fat and Famous”. He was so pissed he shoved me with all his body weight and screamed a few expletives. All the people around clapped and then laughed at him, which made him real pissed. I only spilled a little of my cocktail. I thought he was going to slug me.
• Dan Akroyd-LA Airport-while he was filming the movie “Couch Trip” I was on 3 hour layover to Tahiti and the international terminal was nearly empty-he filmed a single scene getting off a bench about 80 times. I spoke to him on his way to the pay phone, (can you believe he had to use a pay phone), and he gave me an autograph on my Wall Street Journal I was reading
• John Amos-dad on Good Times-met him at Darryl Dawkins house during a summer barbeque-he is a really nice guy and I didn’t know at the time a Chiefs fan-he was drafted by them
• Tom Cruise-at the nightclub Heartbreak in Manhattan the same night I met all the Red Sox. This was the night Game 7 was rained out. I was shocked to see the Red Sox there. Sat in his booth with my buddy who had a mutual friend in Glen Ridge NJ they both knew. He was pretty quiet, drinking a beer, and nice. Before he became super famous-Cher was also here at the club but she left shortly after we got there and she was across the room. They may have been dating at the time.
• Vanessa Williams-Miss America (dethroned)-met her on the Atlantic City boardwalk with her little old German grandma of a chaperon. She looked Hispanic not Black. Extremely beautiful in person and polite. Brief chat she was on way to rehearsals for the pageant
• Carmen Electra-Signing autographs at Comdex in Las Vegas before public opening-wears tons of makeup but still great shape. Seems very phony and gave the same “cute” spiel to everyone.
• Buzz Aldrin- Signing autographs at Comdex in Las Vegas before public opening. A little cranky and not much of a talker to most people.
• Helen Gurley Brown-Cosmopolitan Editor and recently deceased-she and her husband David Brown shared business class flight with me to Beijing, China. She and her husband looked like mummies they were so old. Her husband needed a lot of help from her and it was really hard to imagine she started Cosmo-she was actually nicer than I expected. She asked me a lot of questions about China.
• Alan Thicke-father in Growing Pains-in the United Airlines Red Carpet Club Lounge in Newark Airport, NJ-he was polite and engaging-we talked a good deal about Canada and he was hitting on one of the ladies in the lounge-it was late and few people left
• Jeremy Irons-English actor in Diehard-I went to a movie premier in San Francisco for his film "Chinese Box" which he starred in. The movie sucked but I met him at the after party. he had a super hot date. Nice guy but conversation was brief as I didn't want to discuss the shitty movie I just saw. i really was hoping to see Gong Li but she didn't show. Skyy Vodka was the sponsor and the party rocked.
• George Wendt-Norm from Cheers-He was a guest at a high tech trade show I attended and he stopped in to a private party to tell a few jokes and pick a winner of a grand prize. He joined us at the bar and chatted for quite a while. He likes to drink and he sweats a lot just like his character on Cheers.
• Bernard Shaw-Former CNN anchor. He was on my plane to Hong Kong during the handover. We spent about 15 minutes chatting while at the luggage carousel. He was all alone and no one else approached him to talk.
• James Patterson-World famous author. He used to belong to a local country club at the Jersey Shore when he lived on the ocean in Mantoloking, NJ. I played in the Oldsmobile Scratch and Scramble and he was one of my foursome. He played so God damn slow it was horrible. He was a nice guy but this was at least 20 years ago, just as he was getting popular as an author and still working for ad agency WPP in New York. Nothing remarkable and he stayed around for a few drinks. Not a good golfer at the time.

Political
• John Sununu-Governor of New Hampshire and White House Chief of staff under Bush-had drinks at table with him in Tallahassee Florida when Jeb kicked off his career. Talks a lot and tells good stories. Also likes his cocktails.
• Jeb Bush-Governor of Florida-after his campaign speech got to spend a few minutes chatting. Really pays attention to what each person is saying and very nice guy. Seems genuine.
• George Schultz-Secretary of State under Ronald Reagan-I was living in San Francisco at the time and went to a dinner in honor of the mayor of Shanghai Xu Kuangdi. George Shultz was sitting two tables away and when the dinner ended everyone went to speak to Xu Kuangdi but I went up to George Schultz. I reached out my hand to shake his hand and the Secret Service nearly jumped me thinking I might have a weapon. He shook my hand and I thanked him for his great service under Reagan. He was old and seemed to be having trouble really engaging. His snobby social-climbing bitch of a wife, Charlotte Smith Mailliard Swig Shultz, came over, stepped in front of me, cut off our conversation, and said “George we have to go” and dragged him away, Our former Secretary of State is pussy whipped!!!

It’s really funny that after living in the Washington DC area for the last 5 years, I’ve not met one single politician or celebrity!

How do you get the guts to ask Hank Stram on a date?

Actually, this would be the best of all of the sightings in the thread so far, in my opinion. A dinner and conversation with Hank Stram would be worthy of a big entry in my diary.

We both had a layover to another destination. He asked if I was going to have dinner and I said yes. He said, "shall we find a spot to eat?". I was tremendously honored. I'm quite certain I had a bit of a chub the whole time. NTTAWWT.

I have met the rock band Helix before twice, and the singer is on my Facebook. I had a beer with Brian MacRae in Westport years ago and 30 minutes later as I was entering the can, he was leaving and patted me on the shoulder and said, "Hey, Ed, how's it going?" I saw Tommy the Puke Morrison two times in bars. He was sitting next to me and a girl came and sat next to him and wanted him to light her cigarette. He asked me if I had any fire and I said I didn't smoke. Then I said, "Good luck in the ring," and he said thanks. Then he got his ass beat in a tune up fight and lost out on a huge payday with Lennox Lewis. Moron. :doh!:

If Playmates count as celebs, I knew a few of them and was private security for them at some trade shows. I also had dinner with two of them (not at the same time) and won a "breakfast date" with another.

I also saw Tim Robbins in O'Hare back in 2009. He was goofy looking and walked almost like he was wearing flippers. We made brief eye contact but I was not about to say anything to him. I didn't see his old lady, Turkeyneck Sarandon around, either.

Also, a guy I graduated with has been in TV shows and commercials, so if he counts, then I also have met and know Mike Madrigal. He was on Modern Family in May, played a school teacher and had two scenes where he got to speak.

I've met Chris Jericho, Rob Van Dam, and Maria from WWE at two different signings.

I used to work on the Strip a few years back in Room Service. Served Sylvester Stallone a few times. Made him a Cranberry Vodka which he snatched from my paw as soon as it was made. Pam Anderson used to have a stage show and I would set up her backstage drinks and food things. Amy Winehouse and Dita Von Tease (sp?) were backstage for the premiere. I had to beat cheeks across the property and back for a fifth of Jack Daniels which Winehouse promptly mouth hugged.

Set up backstage stuff for Dave Mathews and Trey Anastasio, who are both super nice.

Saw Mike Tyson's crazy looking ass a few times up in the tower.

Served Criss Angel, he's nice.

Dropped something off in Jim Lampley's room once. He had a fine ass girl in his room. When I came it he was in the process of rolling up some fine smelling dank. Room stunk of it.

Probably served a few more that I don't remember. The biggest one was when I was helping out my butler buddy with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver. We set up some fine sushi platter business and just stood in the corner, waiting to top off their Cristal. Arnold had some dude who was probably an Austrian bodybuilder because he was huge and sounded just like Arnold. After they left, we polished off the sushi and cracked another bottle of Rose, on Terminator's comped tab.

The list of celebrities that I've met is nearly endless but part of that comes from working in the entertainment business, working on both the Paramount & Universal lots and sharing a building with the Dreamworks guys (Spielberg was always a gentleman). I'll list a few in which I've had more than a "Hi, nice to meet you" moment that really stuck:

1. Les Paul. I was invited to his 75th birthday party at Griffith Park shortly after I arrived in Los Angeles back in 1993. It was an amazing tribute and I got to not only jam with tons of "Rock Stars" at the time but got to chat and play a little bit with Les. He's a true innovator and a very kind gentleman. It was an honor to meet him.

2. I may have told this story on the 'Planet before but during the summer of '93, I worked at Guitar Center in Berkeley (I had moved up there for a "business opportunity" that unfortunately, didn't pan out). The Bay Area music scene was huge. Joe Satch would come in an hang, Kirk & James from Metallica, the guys from Testament, Tesla and Tony Tone Toni and even Linda Perry from 4 Non Blondes (who has since become a genius songwriter).

I had one guy, just a few years younger than myself, in the store everyday. He was "supposedly" recording a record for Warner Brothers but he would never play guitar in front of me. I ended up setting up some of the guitars for their "record". I decided to move back to Hollywood at the end of August that summer and when he found out about it, invited me down to a show at the old Berkeley Square theater. At the end of the show, he called me out and said "I'll miss my friend, Dane, who's moving back to Hollywood to join Stryper" (totally untrue, BTW). That was the last I saw of him.

The next thing I knew, his album was being called "Album of the Year" 1994 before it even came out. I couldn't even believe it was the same Billy Joe but he's had a little success since. ;)

3. In 1995, I was at the Ralphs grocery store at midnight to buy beer. I turned and looked and recognized a Grammy winning, multi-platinum producer standing right next to me. "You're Andy Johns!", I said. "Quite right" was his response. I said "Nice to meet you, I'm a big fan of your work" or some stupid shit and went on my way.

As it turned out, he was in the checkout line in front of me. We chatted briefly, then he left. As I was walking to my car, he suddenly drove up in front of me. "Where are you headed?", he asked. "Back to my pad to drink and listen to music", I said. "I'll join you".

The next eight hours may have the coolest memories I have, from talking about his work in the first Hendrix album to the Stones, Zeppelin, Van Halen, MSG, Cinderella and on and on and on. I even had to speak to his wife and assure her that he wasn't out with some bimbo.

4. Wife and I went to NYC for my birthday with friends back in 2008. Our first stop was Central Park, where I nearly bumped into Hank Azaria when he was jogging. "Hey, it's Hank Azaria!" Wife "I think he knows who he is, Dane!". Later that same trip, after watching the Chiefs lose to the Jets, we went to Del Frisco's on 48th and ran into Charles Barkley. He invited us to join him at the bar, where we chatted, drank and watched the World Series.

Chuck was cool, but a little too handsy with my wife. Instead of hanging out all night (as he wanted to do), we headed back to the W at midnight. It could have turned ugly.

About a week later, we're at Jerry's Famous Deli in Studio City and lo and behold, we're standing in line behind who? Hank Azaria. "I'll give you $20 bucks to say "Hey, it's Hank Azaria!" my wife whispered in my ear.

That's right, $20 bucks richer. :D

--------

My daughter's preschool is filled with celebrity parents, from Oscar nominated directors to guys like Traci Guns, Minnie Driver (sweetest woman, ever!), Nick Bakay (average looking dude with a Playboy wife, always a winner), and on and on and on. I have three good friends this year nominated for Prime Time Emmys, which is really cool.

Oh, and have I mentioned that Chris Brown moved up the street?

Yeah, fuck that guy.

Oh, here's another good one you guys might enjoy.

I've got a close friend with kids that go to school with kids of "celebrities" (hate that word, BTW). I've been asked to hook up with him and one his new buds, Neal McDonough, on several occasions but scheduling didn't work out.

Finally, we got to meet and hang for my bud's 40th birthday. Not only was Neal a cool dude, we chatted for quite a long time about his experience on "Band of Brothers". Turns out, the guy lost 13 teeth during the repeated jumps they did for the show and earned a medal from the surviving brothers.

I thought it was cool and honorable that he had so much passion and respect for his role.

Sally Ride

Stevie Ray (wrestler, brother of Booker T)--biggest hands I've EVER seen...would NOT want to get hit by him for any reason
Bob Dole (the real one)
Rev. Basil Pennington, OCSO (late Trappist priest and author)
John Cardinal O'Connor -- extremely nice, humble man
Rev. Benedict Groeschel -- not as nice as you'd think
John McClain -- Houston sports writer and sports radio personality
Jerome Solomon-- Houston sports writer

I've met the mascots for every Houston Sports team:
Toro (Texans) -- nice, nerdy, guy outside of the costume--had great things to say about KC Wolf -- got distracted by the Texans cheerleaders with him---they changed in my office!
Junction Jack -- Astro's mascot
Clutch: Rockets mascot
Diesel: Houston Dynamo mascot
--I was the opening manager for a Houston Public Library branch named after a popular sports writer so we had all the team mascots there for the opening. I wish I could find it, but someone got a picture of all the mascots playing the Wii (before we opened to the public). The funniest part: when someone walked up with a camera, Junction Jack told them not to take a picture until he put his costume hands back on!

Ate a few tables away from Cameron Diaz. That was odd.

We used to live on the corner of Sunset & Fairfax in an awesome condo at the tip of the Sunset Strip.

I used to go directly from work to the gym, then grab dinner on the way home. Did it for years, especially since there were great places on that corner (Bristol Farms, Baja Fresh, etc.). I always called in my order because these places were always jammed packed.

One night, I'm in line for pick up at Baja Fresh (LOVE their Baja Chicken salad). EVERYONE in the fucking place is staring at ME. I'm dripping in sweat, fully disgusting, with a skullcap that's soaked as well.

After about 3 minutes, I begin looking around. Why is everyone staring at ME? I finally turn around and see Cameron Diaz directly behind me in line.

Me: I am so sorry! I'm soaking wet and stink from my workout.

Cameron: No worries! You should smell ME after I workout!

Have I ever told this story to Chiefsplanet?

I met O.J. Simpson at the premiere of the Phantom Menace back in 1999. We saw the film at the twin towers in Century City. I had a friend buy the tickets in advance, so my wife and I met him and his daughter at the theater.

As we're standing in line, there are faux Darth Maul's and faux Obi Wan Kenobi's doing lightsaber battles. The music from the film is blaring in the courtyard. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Robert Shaprio exiting one of the towers.

The next I thing we all know is that O.J. Simpson enters the courtyard with his daughter and gives Shapiro a huge hug! I don't know what was more fascinating: The lightsaber battles or Shapiro/Simpson! Remember, this was 1999!

Wait: It gets better.

So, we're getting close to entering the entrance to the theater, which was long before seat selection was possible with an online purchase (the only way to go, these days). My friend who purchased the tickets saw O.J. and his daughter go to the back of the line and immediately said "Wow, O.J. is in the back!".

O.J. must have had superhuman hearing. He immediately walked up to my friend, who was directly in front of me in line and said "Do you mind if I cut inline? It's been a long day with my daughter". My idiot friend said "Yes" and began talking to him about his NFL days.

He keeps a list.

When I was a kid, I met then-backup QB Mike Livingston at a car dealership promo. I stood there speechless and agog, amazed that my dad would actually make small talk with a Kansas City Chief.

In part, my speechlessness was hero-awe, and in part it was mere confusion. When he took me, my dad didn't tell me what we were doing. He just said he had a surprise for me. So we get in the car and we're driving and we pull into this car dealership, and all of a sudden I'm thinking, "GO KART! GO KART! I'M GETTING A GO KART!" And then we get out of the car and go in and there's a guy standing there and he's not even in a Chiefs uniform and he's not 11 feet tall, and my dad says, "This is Mike Livingston", and my mind reeled with a thousand conflicting thoughts. I simultaneously had to deal with the fact that I wasn't getting a go kart, that I was meeting my first Chief, that a Chief did not always wear his uniform, and that a Chief on the street did not look like a superhero. It was a lot to deal with.

Ha! I was just pitching a movie to his production company based on one of his novels. Won't say which one, because it basically came out that he hates the novel. I was like, "Okay, so I'm pitching a movie that you don't like, that I wasn't happy writing, based on a novel that I don't own, and that the author hates. I'm going to say my favorite memory is when I did a sketch comedy show. One of my cast mates, and a good friend of mine, is really tight with James Gandolfini, so he came to the show. Gandolfini came out with us afterwards, and I just kind of let them be alone, so I drank with some other people. The waitress came by dropping off drinks:

"Manhattan on the rocks?"
"oh, I didn't order this, but I'll take another please."
"Mr. Gandolfini sent this over."
"Uh...that's the coolest ****ing thing anyone has ever said to me. Thanks."

Toast to Gandolfini.

Waitress comes back.

"Can I get another Manhattan on my tab?"
"Mr. Gandolfini wants to buy it."
"Sure. that's... sure. No problem."

End of night.

"Can I get my tab?"
"Mr. Gandolfini would like to take care of the bill."

I played 18 holes with Jim Otto way back in 1981 or something like that. Didn't even kow who it was till the round was over and my buddy said "That was Jim Otto!"

I shot a 73 and kicked his ass......

The whole celeb thing just doesn't mean shit to me.

Hell, I forgot that I played Longview Lake course (now Fred Arbanas GC) with Fred Arbanas once.

I was playing a round as a walk on and the starter asked me if I'd mind playing with Fred Arbanas. Hell no, I wouldn't mind!

Real nice guy and also a liar. I was playing like shit and he kept telling me "nice shot, Bob". The hell it was, now help me find my ball.

My grandparents lived with Johnny Cash and June. Basically, they built a huge house in Branson, and when Johnny opened his theater there, they lived with my Grandparents.

Even as a kid, I knew that was badass. What I wouldn't give to go back and have my adult mind when I talked to him.

Geez these are some lists.

I shook hands with Mickael Gorbachev (sp?) once when he visited IU for a talk back in the mid-90's. I was coming out of the student union early in the morning after getting some coffee and he steps out of a limo with two security guys. Couple of us students walked up and shook hands. Didn't really say anything, but he was polite.

Pretty cool to shake the hands someone who could have destroyed all of mankind if he so inclined.

Many, but only in a "hi how do you do" way not like I know them. My close family member owns a business with several tour coaches driving music acts, stage acts, etc. around the country on tour.

Have partied with the Kotton Mouth Kings on several occasions. Those guys are sharp young men.

A couple times that come to mind are when I was a college freshman.

Mickey Rourke and Terry Farrell were in town together. Went up to their room, Terry asked me if I could get them some blow. Rourke was sitting at the table in the corner, in the dark, smoking a cig, with a pile of crumpled up bills on the table.

I went to Rober Goulet's room to deliver hot water and honey. He wasn't there, propped the door open per procedure, went in and this animal thing landed on my shoulder. Turned out he had a couple of exotic cats, one had jumped on me from the spiral staircase, then the bastard ran out the door. Here's me chasing Robert Goulet's cat down the hallway laughing my ass off at the absurdity of it all.

Can't think of too many.

Did the twist with Chubby Checker at a free concert in front of Crown Center when I was a lad of 6 or 7. He pull me out of the crowd and showed me what to do. Way bigger deal for mom than me at the time.

Talked at length with Walter Payton when he was lobbying for an NFL team for St. Louis [the Stallions, I think]. Got a 1-1 picture from that one.

Played basketball 3x@week throughout most of 1992 legis session with 'Jay' Nixon and 'Lacy' Clay Jr.

Couple of Gen-Ed classes with Jenna Fisher at Truman [nee Northeast Missouri State], never really interacted w/her though, much to my chagrin.

We really LOVE our preschool. They don't advertise and it's word of mouth only. Very involved parents, which is awesome.

True Story:

My daughter completed her first week of preschool last year and the following Saturday, we were hanging in her playroom. Out of the blue, she says this:

Daughter: Daddy?
Me: Yes, baby?
Daughter: you never say fuck or shit, right?
Me: That's right, Baby. Who told you that?

Girl next to me:

"Can I get my tab, too?"
"I'm sorry, Mr. Gandolfini would like to take care of the entire table's bill."

I met stephone page when I was a kid.

Recently I was the security escort for Ron White.

I met Mike Ditka a couple years ago in Chicago. Lumpy started a thread about it.

That was pretty cool.

My friend works with the Children's Hospital people. The whole David Wain/Ken Marino group. I've met Ken and Paul Rudd. Oh - and David Koechner, but that because our families know each other.

He's an MU guy, which I'll forgive. Really, really nice. He got me tickets to his show once, and this unknown comic named Zac Galifinakis was opening. That was a trip.

The comedy people I am more in touch with are SNL people, honestly. I was at the Groundlings for a long time, so you just end up becoming friends with people who go on to be really successful.

One of my friends is about to blow up. It's pretty cool to watch.

Too many to list as I work for a movie studio but the biggest is Clint Eastwood/Tom Cruise, met those guys several times.

Here's a funny one. Went to the head of the studio's office and waited outside for Sean Penn to come out. I needed to give him a piece of art we'd done for Gangster Squad and not let the (soon to be ousted) CEO see me do it.

So I wait outside and when he comes out I go kinda quietly "Hey Sean...this is for you to approve"

He doesn't recognize me or know what's going on and goes "HOLY SHIT AM I BEING SERVED??"

I'm like, uh no, I work on Gangster Squad just open it later. As I'm walking away he yells "OKAY BUT I BETTER NOT BE BEING F-ING SERVED!!"

It's the only one I would say will stick with me. Dad took me up to him and he took the time to chat with me about who was my favorite player, how many Chiefs games I'd watched, about five minutes of quality one on one conversation. After my Dad shook his hand and thanked him for his time. He passed away eight months after, I consider it an honor I got to meet him.

Why are athletes included by so many people? I've never, ever felt they were in any way, a "celebrity".

I wouldn't know but a handful of guys if I ever saw them on the street and I follow baseball, basketball and football pretty closely.

Oh, I met the guy who played the Hispanic Lt. on Hill Street Blues after it went off the air. He was shaking hands and smiling in our galley (cafeteria on a ship, I was active duty Navy at the time) and he seemed like a nice guy. Somebody asked him if the show was coming back and he said something like, "Well, I hope so" but this was in Mazatlan and he looked pretty happy to be fucking around in paradise all day long.

I just checked and I guess the guy died of pancreatic cancer back in 1990. That's too bad. He went out of his way to stop by our ship and meet with us. Came off as a genuinely nice guy. RIP.

I haven't been there since they changed ownership. Is it better, worse or any different? Any remodeling?

We really dig the W Hollywood. While the Bliss spa isn't full service there, they do employ excellent people. The rooms are nice and the hotel is fun.

Personally, I never got that vibe at the Ren. We were just down at the Redbury and it's pretty cool, although the bar area is small and I'm waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over their outdoor bar vibe, the "Library". I hated that nonsense when I was younger and have zero tolerance now.

Talk about a room full of douchers and douchettes.

Yeah, the Renaissance was mostly families and business travelers. They'd pretend they were trendy but they were anything but. Pretty much the same place now, from what I hear. Remodeling, but it's all superficial changes I think.

Redbury, W, and the Roosevelt are all much cooler.

Especially where restaurants are concerned.

The Redbury's restaurant was interesting (Persian/Arabic/Greek) but I'm not sure I could make it a regular habit. The French restaurant at the W is pretty good (can't remember the name without looking it up - D something?) and the Roosevelt definitely has the coolest vibe of them all, IMO.

I love that bar, hangin' in the main room, grabbing a burger late or whatever. I'm not into the pool area (unless chicks are getting crazy & naked) but it's probably my favorite of the three if I'm going out with the guys.
