View Full Version : Charlie Garner a Chief?

Stinger

Troy Renck's NFC roundup at Sportswriters Direct had this to say:

While Garcia was impressive, the Chiefs had their eyes on Charlie Garner. Don't be surprised if he's their starting tailback next season.

Has anybody heard anything else about this, or is it just another baseless rumor?

Wasn't he just on Up-Close in the last week or so stating how happy he is in SF?

I don't know about him on up-close, but I do know that Garrison Hearst is about ready to start practicing and he should be ready for next year...

I hate it when every decent RB is rumored to be a Chief next season, but I rarely hear a rumor outside of KC. Just wondering if anybody else had heard anything about it.

The Chiefs could never take advantage of a relatively small back with serious talent. They require a giant fatbody that can fall forward between the tackles for 2 yards at a time.

exactly Clint. Even if he isn't happy there, why would any of these stars want to come her and get lost in the com. Peterson and Gun can tell these guys that is will end until they are blue, but ask K. Anders, T. Rich or M. Cloud if it has ended.

I will no longer believe or listen to any rumor concerning any star RB coming to KC until I see their name on the official roster.<P>

Before we go out I think we really need to find out what we really have in Bennett, I don't see how any of you can think we need to bring anyone in here with Bennett on our squad.

They could have had him for a second round draft pick a couple of years ago.

I think Bennett is a future pro-bowler, but when Christian Okoye comes back from his injury, the Chiefs will once again lead the league in rushing! Heck, then we'll be able to waive Barry Word.

Donnell has the hands of a surgeon and footwork that would put Fred Astaire to shame. With Bennet in the backfield, we should be able to put any warm body in at QB and let them simply hand him the ball. If Bennet was our full-time back, everyone would have already forgotten that Barry Sanders ever played the game.

I think James Garner is a Free Agent. Get the old Firebird out of mothballs and give Jimbo the ball!

Bob:

Shouldn't that be the footwork of a surgeon and hands that would put Fred Astaire to shame?

JC-Johnny: Barry Word was the most devastating rusher the Chiefs ever had. He learned it all from Okoye! I don't know what his salary is next year, but I think he could do pretty good in the FA market. He's way better than that other Barry.

Barry Word - is he the big dude who sings "can't get enough of your love" in that deep voice.
Yeah, get him and James Garner, and you got a heck of a sexy backfield. . . For the la-dies. . .

On a more serious note. I was a proponent of Barry Word in his time with the Chiefs. But in hindsight I wish he had never been a Chief. His success as a "redemption project" IMO led to the chances Peterson took on Rison, Vanover, Bam, etc.

Didn't the Chiefs have Garner in for a workout a few years back?

Charlie Garner? Good Grief!!
What has he done this year? I know he embarrased the Chiefs but anyone else?

King - he is the #5 RB in terms of yards as of right now.

King - He is also tied for #4 in scoring in the NFC (minus kickers) with Ricky Williams.

My dad was talking about this right before the game...according to what he had heard the Chiefs like Garner and they don't think SF can afford to keep him when he becomes a free agent next season.

Brock,

You are correct, but at the time I was hearing he could have been had for a 3rd or a 4th. Carl decided against it.

Carl also decided against trading for Robert Smith ~ 5 years ago when he was looked at as an injury prone back.

Carl and his scouts also said when he became a free agent that Ricky Watters was a bad running back because he "wasted too many junk moves" in the backfield instead of running straight ahead.

Carl has made some great judgements over the years regarding RB's, hasn't he?

It $UCKS, that because of DENIAL, that we even have to think about this with 6 GAMES REMAINING THIS SEASON!

Here's an idea... there's this thing, that the NFL holds in April of every year.... I think it's called the NFL Draft. Call me crazy, but Denver has had good success in this deal over the last few years.

I suggest that KC go out and hire a College Scouting department and then try to pick up one or two of these guys when they apply for the draft.

I know... I'm thinking outside the box here, but Shanahan is pretty good at it, so it might be a fad that catches on...

WOW ... ok, I've had about 8 beers and it's time to go to bed. http://63.249.247.210/ubb/biggrin.gif Sorry for sounding like an a$$, but I'm feeling sorta sassy.

MHM,

We already tried to pull a Denver with the drafting of Moreau. Obviously Gun and Peterson are not as good at drafting backs as Shanarat is...

Mike

No kidding, Wolf. From what I've seen of Moreau, we just picked up another Bennett.

Brad,

LOL. Deltha was interviewed last week on the Ticket 1050 and admitted he was a huge Raider fan growing up out here, had a "no comment" when asked about the behavior of Denver fans, and strongly hinted that he would have liked to have been drafted by the Raiders, and laughed and said "Aw man, you're going to get me in trouble!" The host, Bob Frantz, ended the interview by saying "Deltha, you know you're just waiting until you become a free agent and sign with the Raiders, and then you're going to let it all fly" to which he chuckled but didn't disagree. It was a funny interview to listen to... http://63.249.247.210/ubb/wink.gif

Sorry Best-in-West, but Renck updates his column every day and when I went to get the link it was already gone. The paragraph I posted was under the 49ers heading and was the only thing mentioned about Garner or the Chiefs.
