Could Casey Wiegmann Return At Center?
September 27, 2012 - Bob Gretz | No Comments

On Thursday, the Chiefs reported to the league office a visit/workout at their facility with former center Casey Wiegmann.

With the season ending injury suffered by Rodney Hudson and the inexperience at the position of his replacement Ryan Lilja, obviously the Chiefs are turning over every stone in an attempt to stabilize the position.

The 39-year old Wiegmann retired after the 2011 season, finishing up a 16-year NFL career where he spent 9 of those seasons with the Chiefs (2001-07, 2010-11.) When he left after the finale in Denver, he had started 175 consecutive games, played 11,162 consecutive snaps and played in 200 NFL games.

One problem in a possible Wiegmann return hes lost a lot of weight from his playing days. He was listed last year at 285 pounds and he was really a few pounds under that. Over the last nine months those that have seen him say hes lost a lot of weight and looked like he was down in the 250-pound range. Thats simply too light to consider playing in the NFL these days.

The Chiefs may have simply been feeling Wiegmann out on a possible return, or maybe they brought him in to give tips to Lilja.

Let's hope it's to give tips to Lilja, because playing at 250 is just asking for failure.

Hell while we're at it, let's put McCluster at fullback.

I've said it more than a few times, but Casey has a medialcal issue that makes it hard to put on weight and he would usually start the year around 285-290 max and by years end, he was less than 270 because with working out and practices, he couldn't maintain the weight over the course of the season.

Being he retired, it makes sense that he was closer to his postseason weight because he wasn't doing what it takes to build his bulk back up.

I HIGHLY doubt he is 250, but I also doubt he is more than 265-270 either.

He was probably brought in to ask him to get in a program asap to gain some bulk and try to get up to around 280 (a weight he is effective at) in case we have another injury.

Over the last 3 years, that's why he has faded late in the year.

the problem with Casey is when he's not putting on bulk hes doing crazy workouts and marathons. He had no reason to keep weight so all the cardio he has been doing in the last year he just shed weight.

same with Barry Bonds currently doing all that crazy intense bike riding.

I love Wiegs but, at 250lbs he would get destroyed. On the bright side, he might get Casshole kilt

IF he really has slimmed down to 250lbs, he won't be signed by the Chiefs. But it doesn't hurt to bring him in. Even if it's just to coach up Lilja.

why didnt they do this with the FS position? the CB position? the LBer position? the QB position? the dare i say FB position?

if they approached all these positions like they are now with Center in the offseason and training camp the team wouldnt be in the shit pickle it is.

It is because 90% of the guys we bring in are retreads or Patriot cast-offs.

Kudos? All Pioli could dig up was a retired 39 year old that's 40 pounds too light.

Come on, Dude, he doesn't deserve any "props" for this "move".

We really, really need to get dicked down by the Chargers and Ravens.

I wish the Saints had played a little conservatively and just tried to protect their lead. That safety really fucked us. No way Cassel was leading to us to a TD.

This is a must-lose game if we want to ditch Pioli.

I'd be surprised if Weigman even wants to play anymore so I'm inclined to buy into the tips for Lilja theory. Does anyone know if NFL teams are allowed to pay people to come in for a workout?

Not a good idea going into the season with only 2 backups at OL and both being rookies. Good planning Scott.

Pioli seems to be allergic to depth.

I've NEVER understood it. It's one of his biggest blunders as GM - right up there with Cassel and the inability to draft anyone that has skils at the CB position.

OL depth should have been addressed durinmg the offseason. Most here were in disbelief about KC keeping so few lineman on the "Right 53" with ONLY ROOKIE BACKUPS. Saw this coming a mile away. ANY GM worth a shit could have as well.

You make a good point, but I'm not sure it applies here. We don't know what the purpose of the visit was or what conversations took place. I'm willing to give the front office the benefit of the doubt until I see a 250 pound Casey in a game. Then I'll vent my ire. :D
