View Full Version : Life Kansas City's Best Burger.

Micjones

Recently, I've had quite a few debates about which Kansas City restaurant has the best hamburger. It's cut and dry for me, but it seems that there are a handful of different spots that typically get the nod.

I'm going to restrict the poll options to local spots, but I'm sure a few chains will be mentioned.

For me, it's Town Topic...with a bullet.

Your thoughts?

I've only eaten at two of those: Westport Flea Market and Blanc. Of the two, I liked WFM better. The burgers themselves were comparable, but the atmosphere of WFM was much better IMO.

I've had a burger at every spot listed except Smoke Burgers.
That's actually the restaurant that opened up my most recent debate about "the best burger joint in town." I hear it's better than Town Topic. I find that hard to believe, but I'll find out this weekend.

I can't believe people consider a grease joint burger as the "best burger in town". If you're 3 times the legal limit at 3AM they're great, but any other time they make you feel like crap and you shit your brains out for the following 3 weeks. Blanc has some great burgers... specifically the bison burger.

That said, I cook my favorite burger in the city. 1/2 lb of 85% lean burger on the grill with swiss cheese on a chiabatta bun. Throw some bacon on that, some pineapple, BBQ sauce and lettuce.

Blanc is very good, but I love the hole-in-the-wall spots too.
Their burgers usually have character you just can't find anywhere else.

Town Topic is my drunken spot, though. And that's usually when I want a burger the most.

Not only have I never been to any of the places listed in the poll, I've never heard of most of them. (I've never lived in KC but used to go there a lot when I lived closer). That said I like the burger at Fred P. Otts on the Plaza, across from the tennis courts. I'm not saying it's the best because I haven't had the others. I am saying I've gone back for it a couple times.

There's two very good burger places near Arrowhead. Hi-Boy Burger is just north of US 40 and Blue Ridge Cutoff. It's a true hamburger stand and is relatively unchanged since the 1960's. Big burgers -the double cheese is HUUUUUGE, onion rings are awesome and the shakes are some of the best in the city.

Another place called "Big Boy's" is further east on US 40 near Crysler. That's about a quarter mile east of where the old Blue Ridge Mall was just off I-70. They also have big ass burgers.

Both places are non-chain mom and pops.

There used to be a teensy little restaurant on Kansas City's eastside called 2 Fish & 5 Loaves. They had a "Goliath" burger that had the circumference of some steering wheels (no exaggeration). Easily the biggest burger I'd ever seen with my own two eyes. They also had fabulous chicken wings. If not for having the wrong business people and two shitty locations behind it, that place might've become a real hit around town.

its just a solid burger everytime I go there. Is this question just asking me which one is the best out of this list or which kc burger is the best when I eat it? Or which burger would I choose if I had to eat one burger everyday for the rest of my life. I would choose town topic as the most satisfying burger when I do eat it because in the past when I have had town topic its 3 in the morning from a long night of binge drinking. 2 doubles with fried onions cheese and tator tots. Maybe even get a slice of whatever pie is looking good that morning. dwammn. However if I had to choose a burger that I had to eat everyday, itd be Winsteads. They make a really solid meal that i've eaten probably around a thousand times and I really can not remember a bad meal from there. Which one do I choose on this list? Town Topic because its fucking amazing and those 10 diner bar stools are The heart of Kansas City. Mamma will fix you up good there.

Love the flea market burger. Been going there since junior high, so I grant you there is some nostalgia in the vote, but even with that margin of error factored in, it still wins for me. Town Topic is vile, went there a bunch when downtown was a deserted teenage playground, though I haven't been there in 20 years. I enjoy a winstead's now and again because it is different, and I worked at Chubby's back in the day when it was across from the uptown and I really didn't like the italian sausage blended in the meat that much, but I get why people like it.

A good burger is so satisfying. I am glad so many places have good ones!

And to the LA response, the best under 10 dollar burger in LA right now is at the Oinkster in Eagle Rock, but LA is definitely upping it's burger profile. I've really enjoyed a couple of the pricey ones too.

though, Town Topic is a killer burger after a few beers / when you have the munchies.

One of my favorite neighborhood hangouts close to home is the Englewood Cafe in Western Independence. They make a really good burger, and have great breakfasts.
Old school diner food, and great home made pies too:

changed owners a few years back...Arrowman owns the building.

Good, but not close to being the best.

That's because you didn't eat at this Whatabuger establishment

Delicious.

J. Alexander's. The patty could be better IMO, but JFC, the burger itself is just unbelievable. IDK what kind of crack they put in it, but whatever it is... it works.

Applebees

A few years ago my son and I went to Applebees and ordered Bacon Cheeseburgers. Halfway through we realized they forgot the bacon. A few minutes later we realized we didn't get the fucking cheese either. We got the meal free though. Fucking bastards. LMAO

I'm a lurker around here mostly but had to chime in for this one. The burgers at Czar Bar in downtown KCMO just won best burger in KC during a summertime competition. Good You is the food service provider. They have a 2 for 1 on Wednesday evenings. Paul's drive in is my 2nd favorite.

Good burgers in LA, not KC. Tommy's is the best imo and In'n out burgers are great also.

ditto.

tritto. WFM is a fine burger but nothing to get excited about imo. Then again I tend to get excited about the greasy style of burger where the meet cheese and bun all sort of fuse together - like Chubby's. Which isn't the style at Westport flea market.

Just tried 5 Guys Burgers and Fries for the first time. Menu reminds me of IN and OUT Burger.

THAT is where "MY" comparison stops. Hands down 5 Guys is a better burger... and I don't care for the skinny no substance fries you get at In and Out either.

Burger...though not the BEST burger I've ever had was pretty damn good. Cajun fries were OK but I wouldn't order them again...If I wanted Fresh Fries with a crap load of cajun seasoning dumped on them I could do that at home??

One point I can give to In and Out is PRICE... 5 Guys is 2 and 1/2 times the price and I didn't even get a drink... just Bacon Cheeseburger and Small cajun fires was friggn $10.

But now I know what you guys talking about 5 Guys really mean. ROFL

Yea, good burger and fries but...after a drink it was something like 12 bucks. Shit man.
