Just watched Alex Tanney on Stan Lee's super Humans on the History Channel and they put him to some accuracy tests. He threw 5 consecutive 50 yard passes within a 2 inch circle. We have had a lot of QB talk around here, do you think Tanney can translate that accuracy to the NFL? He is currently on the Reserve/injured list and I think should get a serious look. You can't coach that kind of accuracy and God knows it has been lacking from the QB position for a long time in KC!!

A serious look for an undrafted QB when we are about to draft #1.

Only the Chiefs.

Thats great, but how accurate will he be when he has four 300 pounders bearing down on him ready to smack his grill?

not saying we still don't look to draft, but we shouldn't pass on looking at a possible diamond in the rough. I would have taken Warner in his prime and he was stocking shelves playing arean football the year before winning the Superbowl. Wouldn't mind having that kind of rags to riches story in KC!

The only reason Tanney is still a Chief is because Pioli couldn't let Cassel be the only QB on the roster that could hit the crossbar.

looks like they're scared to throw the ball beyond 7-8 yards.

It would be cool to see him on the field during THIS season, or perhaps in a preseason game though.

Meh. He'd probably throw quite a few picks just because he'd be fooled by defenses. Having said that, what could it hurt. It's basically training camp now for next year.

I say put him in. Seriously, what is there to lose? But it won't happen, they'll start Stanzi before that. His accuracy is quite stirring, but as was mentioned, how will he perform under extreme NFL pressure? Methinks not too well. He's a circus act.

This. The chiefs season is done without hope. We may as well plug noob players in and find out whether or not they are a wasted roster spot for the future. Start weeding through all of them. Get them some garbage stats for trade value.

Yeah, I watched it last spring. I was really just commenting on the position of QB and how it relates to hitting a dixie cup from 20 meters.

He's impressive, no doubt. But that video was not live, it was edited for the obvious purpose.

Tanney is an interesting prospect, but let's be honest here -- playing QB in the NFL is as much or more about outsmarting defenses.

I don't understand why they didn't use him in the redzone more in preseason. If he can drop the ball on a dime, why not have 10 or so timing patterns for him to throw?

Oh, that's right, they would need to get in the red zone first. My bad.

Well the op said he should get a serious look. The last thing I want is the fan base falling in love with some undrafted gimmick QB and thinking he has any chance to be our QB. (Thigpen). That is just giving the FO an excuse to draft a corner or ILB in the top 5

Understandable... while Thigpen was way better than Huard, the hype surrounding him was way overblown. You could see quickly he was not anywhere elite enough to move forward with him.

2011, 2012 NFL Draft: Alex Tanney Trick Shot QB Number Two

By David Fucillo (http://www.sbnation.com/users/David%20Fucillo) on Feb 21, 2:00p

Earlier this month pwillisbeast52 put together a FanPost with video of Connecticut quarterback Johnny McEntee (http://www.sbnation.com/ncaa-football/players/35847/johnny-mcentee)making a variety of trick throws (http://www.ninersnation.com/2011/2/9/1984284/49ers-need-some-johnny-mac). McEntee will be returning to UConn next year so he won't be getting discussion for this year's draft (or even necessarily future drafts). Apparently however, McEntee has been an inspiration for others. A Division III quarterback has followed up McEntee's video with his own video. Alex Tanney of D-III Monmouth College (Illinois) put together his own video I've posted after the jump (tip of the cap to Matt Barrows tweeting (http://twitter.com/#%21/mattbarrows/status/39774715904000000) the video from a National Football Post link (http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Monmouth-QB-answers-UConn-signalcallers-trickshot-video.html)).

I'm not 100% sure of Tanney's status for the 2011 NFL Draft. He missed almost the entire 2010 season with a torn A-C- joint in his right shoulder. I've seen reports he's going to have a medical redshirt (http://www.d3football.com/notables/2011/02/trick-shots) and return to Monmouth in 2011, but most reports indicate he will be deciding "during the winter months." Considering he's not in division one, I'd imagine the news will only slowly get out. Scouts Inc has not included him on their QB rankings thus far (which do include a D-3 quarterback).

If he does enter the draft, I'd imagine he'd end up as an undrafted free agent. Prior to this past season's injury he was putting together filthy numbers at Monmouth, setting just about every passing record at the school. According to Tanney (http://draftnasty.com/football/conferences/fcs-div2-div3/who-is-alex-tanney/), they run a no-huddle, hurry-up style of offense in which they want to snap the ball with no more than five seconds off the clock. This up-tempo offense has resulted in Tanney throwing for 10,382 yards in 34+ games (knocked out early in 35th game).

The numbers are a bit freakish given the offensive system, but I still figure it's worth looking into. DraftNasty.com conducted an interview with Tanney (http://draftnasty.com/football/conferences/fcs-div2-div3/who-is-alex-tanney/) last summer before what was supposed to be his senior season. Tanney discussed his work in pro-style offenses, his best routes and his own strengths as a QB.

Matt: Have you spent any time or done any training in a pro-style offense?
Alex: This past spring and summer I've been working only under center. The people I've talked to told me to work on that, so we have been.
Matt: What is the most comfortable route for you to throw to?
Alex: The 12-18 yard comeback and the dig coming across the field are my most comfortable throws. With the type of offense we run, those are options coming off quite a few routes or 'combo' routes as we call them. I get the most of these type of throws in practice and in the games.

....

Matt: What do you feel is your biggest strength?
Alex: I would say two things: my accuracy, that's what I've focused on since I was in HS. Just being extremely accurate with the ball and taking care of the ball. Then I would say my work ethic. Since high school, I've put on about 45 pounds just working out in the weight room. Just to get my size up to be durable and to get a stronger arm.
Now I'm not saying Tanney is a guy the 49ers should automatically be targeting as an undrafted free agent this year or next year. It's easy to get enamored by some under the radar guy just because of the buzz around his trick-shot video. However, things like this get these guys on the radar. I'm sure scouts have made appearances at Monmouth games, but I can't imagine he's been high on the radar of many teams. A little gimmick video like this could at least get his name out there for more teams to at least consider.

True, Not being able to handle the pressure when faced with adversity.

But this kid has faced defensive pressure, granted not Div 1 or NFL, but each year is a learning experience. The word is he is above average for intelligence, who knows what he can do.

Only time will tell, they kept him around for some reason. I'm not pinning my hopes up but just taking a wait and see approach.

Anybody watch Stan Lees super humans?

Alex Tanney was on the show tonight.

Hit the crossbar from the 50 on the first try and then hit a bullseye target from 30 yards out 5 times in a row... right in the middle every throw.

The episode title is "human shield" if anyone wants to watch it on demand.

BossChief

He stands on the roof of a 6 story building (150 feet up) and he throws a pass to a guy sitting in the back of a truck going 20 miles an hour.

First pass...the pass hits the hands of the guy but he drops it.

Alex goes again and completes the pass.

...

He knocked a water bottle off the head of the host from 40 yards out.

This guy has some crazy talent.

It's one thing to make some YouTube videos when you have days to try over and over...it's another when the host asks you to hit the crossbar from the 50 and you walk right over and do it the first time...same with the other tests.

Can the guy not learn a playbook?

I don't think there is any question that they hid and then illegally stashed him. Even if his injury was legit who puts a UFA with 4ish snaps of game film on IR.
I think they just didn't want him having game film so no other team would complain.

When he was throwing into the net with the holes he was nailing it everytime whereas Cassel/Quinn/Stanzi couldn't get it at all.

The fact that he was carried all of last year makes me think the previous regime thought he was something special. The fact that he didn't see a single snap during preseason when everybody was CLAMORING to see him, and our QB position looked like a cheap Chinese buffet, makes me think they didn't want anybody else to have tape of the kid and wanted to give him a year of development before they gave him a real shot.
