This is extremely, extremely unusual. They have never seen anything like it.

A building or two has collapsed.

High tide is projected for sometime around 9 pm ET.

There are dumbasses stuck in a flooded shelter in Atlantic City all night, too (AC is on a fucking mud island). Christie had a presser earlier and said, in so many words, "I ordered everyone to leave this morning. If you ignored that, don't call us now, I'm not sending rescuers out in the dark. You're on your own; we'll be there in the morning."

one of the most prepared cities in the world or not, it's half covered in darkness due to blackouts and widespread flooding that is disrupting most normal forms of transportation. that is what makes it like Katrina. this is not something that anyone can be completely prepared for, because of the chaotic nature of hurricanes. there are collapsed cranes, buildings on fire, people trapped at various locations and their 911 system is overwhelmed. it's practically a green light for looters who have been preparing for this thing for about the same amount of time as the city.

i fully understand that. my point is that in a disaster like this the police will be too occupied helping save lives to respond to opportunistic looting, which means the people being looted will be largely on their own. that's not the kind of thing that usually ends well, for anyone. that's why i originally said "the real fun begins when the looting starts." there is absolutely nothing fun about hurricanes at all, and I should put some more thought into it before i posted. it was never my intention to make light of the situation or to see the thread derailed.

http://public-blog.nrc-gateway.gov/2012/10/29/nrc-continues-to-monitor-sandy-including-alert-at-oyster-creek-plant/

The NRC continues to monitor impacts of Sandy on nuclear power plants in the Northeastern U.S., including an Alert declared at the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant in New Jersey. The plant, currently in a regularly scheduled outage, declared the Alert at approximately 8:45 p.m. EDT due to water exceeding certain high water level criteria in the plant’s water intake structure.

An Alert is the second lowest of four NRC action levels. The Alert was preceded by an Unusual Event, declared at approximately 7 p.m., EDT, when the water first reached a minimum high water level criteria. Water level is rising in the intake structure due to a combination of a rising tide, wind direction and storm surge. It is anticipated water levels will begin to abate within the next several hours.

As of 9 p.m. EDT Monday, no plants had to shut down as a result of the storm although several plants were already out of service for regularly scheduled refueling and maintenance outages. All plants remain in a safe condition, with emergency equipment available if needed.

Eh, I'll hold off on drawing that comparison until we see what actual damage is done. Twitter didn't exist during Katrina, so it's tough to tell how much of what we're hearing is real and how much is just rumor. Clearly it's not good, but whether we're talking that level of destruction remains to be seen. My guess is that the dollar value will be higher, but the level of true tragedy will be much lower.

I guess I just need clarification on how you're defining your comparison. Katrina killed nearly two thousand people, and that's just plain not gonna happen here. update There was a bigger earthquake in that area on Saturday. Its just an aftershock. Nobody died or was injured in the one on Saturday. The only major issue was a rock slide that took out a road. Its a remote area

ya and that is west coast.

i fully understand that. my point is that in a disaster like this the police will be too occupied helping save lives to respond to opportunistic looting, which means the people being looted will be largely on their own. that's not the kind of thing that usually ends well, for anyone. that's why i originally said "the real fun begins when the looting starts." there is absolutely nothing fun about hurricanes at all, and I should put some more thought into it before i posted. it was never my intention to make light of the situation or to see the thread derailed.

NYPD are not worried about looters. The NYPD has a closed-circuit TV surveillance system all over the city that are providing live feeds to NYPD's Command Center. Its the most advanced surveillance system in the world. They could track a citizen to and from work.

Here's a laugh: The NYPD has a Citywide Vandals Task Force (CVTF) with transient and graffiti section.

The CVTF regularly researches, tests, and develops new equipment in its endeavor to capture graffiti vandals. Technology solutions include using infrared cameras for photographing graffiti vandals at night and global positioning satellite (GPS) devices to track their whereabouts when they are in a vehicle.

The NYPD is an intimidating force. Looters? They'll be shot dead before they step out of the store. LOL

These guys are one of the most strikingly visual units in the NYPD. Heavy weapons units are spread all over the city. NYPD are everywhere.

So, the upshot is that it was pretty much as predicted, with two minor differences: First, it hit a little farther north than expected, so New York got more damage, and Washington got less, than they at first thought. The second is that Sandy sped up as she hit the coast, so she didn't linger, which would have increased the damage from flooding exponentially.

So, it's like Katrina in that it was very, very bad, but it could have been a lot, lot worse.

A six volt is just a container for smaller batteries. Really nothing harmful unless you try licking both contacts at once.

We have yet to hear from our son, DIL and the 2 kids. They live in a high rise condo on the westside of Mahattan, about the 59th ST.

I'm sure they are OK as far north as they are probably no cell phone signals. Any water would be regulated to the bottom of the building, they live about 3 full city blocks from the Hudson River.

Rats, rats, everywhere ... Although, these two rats are actually cute - You see them all the time.

Speaking of gross, one concern on the minds of New Yorkers is what happens to all rats when the subway floods? Rats are good swimmers, at least in calm waters, so many of the millions of vermin are likely to have escaped the waters and scurried to the safety of buildings. One possible upside: it might be the case that the biggest, meanest, dominant rats live deeper down in the subways tunnels, and so may have drowned in the flooding. At least that’s according to tweets from Bora Zivkovic (@boraz), who writes for Scientific American. “Many will drown. Bloated carcasses will float to the top. They can swim, but not dive through pipes, upwards, in rough water,” he wrote, citing a book called “Rats.”
