Anger turning to apathy as Chiefs churn along toward 1 of worst seasons in franchise history

Published October 29, 2012

Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. The most turnover-prone team in the NFL has two banged-up quarterbacks who are struggling anyway, a head coach who appears out of touch with the offense and a defense that just gave up 26 points to the Oakland Raiders.

Is there any surprise the Kansas City Chiefs are 1-6?

Now, they don't even have a chance to ruminate over their dismal showing Sunday. The Chiefs have to be back on the field Thursday night at San Diego, where they'll try to end a four-game skid that has positioned them well to have the first overall pick in the NFL draft.

"When you lose, it gets tough on you, mentally, you know? You wonder about who you played, what you could have done differently, why things are happening the way they're happening. You get down a little bit," coach Romeo Crennel said Monday.

"When you have a whole week to recover, as the week goes on, you have time to put the game behind you," he said. "We have to get them to put this behind us."

That's not exactly going to be easy.

For one thing, the Chiefs aren't sure who they'll have under center after Brady Quinn took a blow to the head and Matt Cassel got banged up late in the game against Oakland.

Quinn was being evaluated for a possible concussion on Monday, and Crennel said he'll remain the starter if he's cleared to play. Otherwise, Cassel will be back under center after losing the starting job last week due to his own poor performance the first five games of the season.

"I'll be ready to go," Cassel said. "Whatever the situation is, I'll be ready to go. I don't know what the situation is with Brady we'll find out more but I'll be ready to go."

Quinn was just 2 of 4 for a single yard before getting hurt, either on a sack by Rolando McClain or on the ensuing play, when he threw an interception. Cassel didn't fare a whole lot better, throwing for 218 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the 26-16 defeat.

"There's always a sense of urgency," Cassel said after the game. "As I said before, I'm going to be the same guy, I'm going to continue to work hard, I'm going to continue to prepare, I'm going to continue to be diligent about what I do."

The two interceptions thrown by Chiefs quarterbacks, along with two fumbles, ran the team's league-leading total to 25 turnovers this season. One of the fumbles came late in the first half, when Javier Arenas was trying to fair catch a punt, and led to Oakland's first touchdown.

Then there was the Chiefs' inability to get the ground game going.

Jamaal Charles, who ran for 233 yards against New Orleans in the Chiefs' only win, only had five carries for four yards against Oakland. When asked why Charles got so few attempts, Crennel said, "Now, that I'm not exactly sure either."

"In the case of Jamaal from the running back position, he had the most touches of any (Chiefs) running back in the game," Crennel said Monday, when pressed about the subject. "We kind of know what's happening and then we adjust the game plan to what's happening to get something done."

Still, Charles only had eight touches in the game. By comparison, the slow-footed Cassel led the team in rushing with seven carries for 35 yards.

"When you're ahead, you can run it more," Crennel said. "When you're behind, generally you try to throw it to get chunks of yards and move down the field a little faster."

Therein lays another one of the Chiefs' problems: They've never played from ahead.

All season long.

The Chiefs are the first team since at least 1940 that has gone through its first seven games without holding a lead in regulation, according to STATS LLC. Their only victory came when Ryan Succop kicked the winning field goal against the Saints in overtime.

"All the time we go in planning to get a lead, or planning to score so we can have a lead, but here again, 3-0, 6-0 and 6-3, that's not even a touchdown's difference there," Crennel said. "So even though it might not be a lead, you can still catch up really easily from that difference.

"Now as soon as it gets to be a 14- or 21-point lead, then it's a different deal."

There's been plenty of those deals this season, too blowout losses to the Falcons, Bills and Buccaneers. It's little wonder that two more banners, paid for by fans, were towed by an airplane over Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday pleading for general manager Scott Pioli to be fired.

The Twitter handle (at)saveourchiefs, which had a hand in the banners over the stadium, went over 100,000 followers over the weekend.

Anger has turned to apathy. Cynicism has set in.

"As a player, you get tired of losing, and that's where we are now," Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Johnson said. "We have to stick together. We do more together than apart. It's one of those year's It's going to be a tough year, and we have to stick it out."

Seriously, I really respected him as a coach but he is absolutely lost as HC. He has no concept of a game plan, strategy, or adjustments. I'm at a loss when I read about his inability to figure out why Jamaal had 5 carries, or how we're losing games.

They need to clean out the ENTIRE coaching staff. I love Emmitt Thomas, and I think Jim Zorn is a good guy, but Jeebus this is just horrific.

And I mean this when I say that there's a good chance that when Pioli, RAC, and the Patriot Way is run out of town, that SOC.com and the movement will get national attention as the first sports fan "Twitter" revolution. The positive focus and message discipline has been phenomenal and is, so far, the difference from all the other attempts.

Special kudos to pr_capone, Marty, Clay, and donors like Hugh and so many others. I really do love you guys for what you're doing for our team. Thanks guys.

The idea of adjustments is funny.

Roleo can't figure out a game plan with two weeks to prepare and an entire staff to act upon his every need.

I wouldn't count on a whole lot of in-game adjustments.

R A C ! R A C ! R A C ! that's what the team chanted after there win against Green Bay last year. They wanted him, they got him for HC. Now what is the problem? They are too lax & play undisciplined football. Crennell doesnt' have a clue what to do. He is trying to be nice and not hurt anyones little feelings. He is letting Dadumball ruin what was a good running team regardless of inapt QB play.

No excuses for our defense. They are blowing chunks all over the field. Yet then again they never have a lead to defend. So maybe they just don't have anything to fight for? You can see some effort in the first half but the second half they look demoralized & same goes with the team as the QB fumbles the exchange between the center & another turn over exceeds any efforts made. The team is demoralized.

Where is the motivation? Tamba Hali not getting sacks, whats up with that? DJ will make some plays & Houston comes close now and then but they put him in pass coverage and whiffs. I don't get it.

The day can't come soon enough that Pioli and his Patriot ways are gone for good.

I used to think Romeo was the best fit for this defense. No fucking way.

Berry's playing out of position and isn't a factor at all, Houston vanishes at times, you wouldn't even know Jackson or Dorsey was on the team. Poe hasn't done anything noteworthy, DJ is missing tackles left and right, Kendrick Lewis is just lost and needs to be replaced and Stanford Routt is the worst player on the defense.

Sure fucking wish they hired Joel Philbin.

In the back of my mind I wondered just how great & how much credit Romeo deserved for the Super Bowl wins for NE. I never recalled that NE had that great of defenses only had a Tomm Brady offense that scored a bunch of points. I don't remember anyone fearing the Patriot defense when they were winning Super Bowls. Teams just new they faced Tomm Brady and BB as head coach and that they had to score a bunch of points to win against them. The Super Bowl against Carolina turned into a shoot out the second half. They won that game by offense makeing the most of the plays. So I just don't see how Crennell is credited as being a great defensive coach? Am I wrong?

I wish I could recall the poster ... but I can't. Anyhow, somebody who actually attended the game said that, based upon the body language of the offense, they appeared defeated and demoralized almost from the beginning of the game.

I honestly don't think that we have more than a few players who give a damn at this point. Once you establish a loser's mentality, it's very difficult to turn around and, if there's one thing we have, it's a loser's mentality.

Where has Hali been, by the way? That's troubling.

I think somehow Tamba has been lost for the season. This was a picture of him I think at the last preseason game when it was reported that he was being suspended for one game against the Falcons. He kind of looks dayzed and confused to me in this picture. How much heart is left in him with this team? They all have struggled during preseason. I think the team was lost during preseason with out leadership taking a hold of the team to make them accountable for there play on the field. Much of that also has to do with really shitty QB play that they don't have a quarterback to believe in that they can rally around & go to battle with imo. There is not a leader on this team.

This is sad times being a Chiefs fan. Very disturbing to see whats going on here.

But leads? Why do you need to be leading to avoid giving up 29.9 points a friggen game? If anything the leads the other teams have probably keeps the score lower because they take their feet off the gas quicker

Yep. This defense is getting its ass handed to them in the first qtr, long before its reasonable to lay blame on the offense.

I do believe the overall D talent is better than what we are seeing, but at the same time I don't see a lot great individual performances. Outside of DJ a few games, and Houston once, our defensive stars aren't shining very bright. The overall scheme may be responsible for the end result, but I don't see guys winning their individual battles very often.

It may be time to start considering the idea that the talent level on this defense isn't quite what we thought.

thinking the D has the talent to be top unit is all that prevents us from acknowledging that the team may need a ground-up rebuild. The offense certainly doesn't provide much comfort in that area. I think a fresh injection of attitude and a few players here and there and it could be good. but then pretty much any D in the NFL could be good with a few players and new attitude, don't you think?

I think a fresh injection of attitude and a few players here and there and it could be good. but then pretty much any D in the NFL could be good with a few players and new attitude, don't you think?I still hold on to the notion that this team has a lot of talent at the skill positions. On offense we have Bowe and Charles. On defense we have DJ, Hali, Berry, Flowers, and potentially Houston.

Even assuming every other guy on this team is just a blue collar type player, the core makes this team a lot closer to good than it's current record suggests. Yes, the need for QB is glaring. But beyond that there is an overwhelming need for a coach/staff that knows how to maximize this talent.

The current coaching staff is outright incompetent. And it's not just poor game management, or bad playcalling. I honestly believe these coaches are fumble-fucking their way through every aspect of their jobs. Brian Daboll has never put out a good offense. Romeo Crennel put together 2 good years of defense in his entire career as D coordinator, and is clearly criminally in over his head as a HC.

We all came into this season expecting to blame all our losses on Cassel. And these coaches have manged to ruin the entire god damn franchise to a degree that blaming Cassel doesn't even make sense anymore.

They need to fire Pioli but the real problem may be cHunt.

And why, exactly, is EVERYONE not fired right now?I don't think Clark operates that way. Nothing is gained by that type of move beyond a small amount of fan appeasement that's quickly forgotten with the following weeks' ass kickings.

I just pray that he's digging into every resource available to him to get the right front office in place the instant this season is done.

The Chiefs aren't any closer now to winning the Super Bowl (or shoot even a winning season) since the day Pioli was named GM. That is TOTAL FAIL. Nothing more needs to be said. He just needs to be fired.

I know Clark doesn't make snap decisions, but they Chiefs could get a jump on next season - especially when evaluating talent and draft strategy if Pioli was let go now. Especially if he could find the right GM now instead of waiting until after the season. I'm betting Cassel and Romeo are let go and Pioli remains.

Enough already you ****ing loser. We get it. You work hard. You prepare. You ****ing suck. No one I've ever heard interviewed pats themselves on the back for their work ethic more than Matt ****ing Cassel.

This song comes to mind when I think about Cassle:

Yo bring it on down
Sooooooy...
(Soy un perdedor I'm a loser baby, so why don't you kill me?)
(I'm a driver, I'm a winner; things are gonna change, I can feel it.)

Aren't they usually employed after the season also?

Aren't they usually employed after the season also?Do you think a potential GM is going to abandon his current team midseason to come to KC?

I don't claim to be be all knowing on the topic, but I can't think of a single time that has ever happened in the history of ever.

I would be surprised if Daboll finishes the season.

Firing only Daboll would be like using a cup to try and save the Titanic

What would be funny to see is Pioli getting fired and then Clark making the entire coaching staff audition for their jobs. I wonder how many players would get yanked quick for sucking.

You aren't going to take a current GM away, but I can see an Asst GM or someone with a similar position in the organization leaving mid season. Firing GM's midseason is fairly rare so I don't think there is much to go on.

We had a OC leave us before the playoffs started.

That team in 1940 was the Eagles. They got off to a 3-0 start in their 8th game.
