View Full Version : Life What do you spend your money on hobby wise?

I was thinking about this today. A buddy of mine has a youtube channel and he is constantly buying shoes for his "collection", and all I think about is how much money he spends on things he wont even wear. I am a big fan of some of the Nike SB shoes, but I wouldn't spend the money on them, I only have 4 pairs of shoes currently. I have another friend who spends all his money on his gun collection. He has spent over $1200 customizing an AR-15, its a sick gun, but that's quite a bit of dough.

I got to thinking about what I spend my money on (fun wise) and I really don't have anything. I like to fish, but I don't spend more than $50 bucks a season on supplies. I am into old cars, but I havent spent any money on them recently (still havent got my Cutlass back). I have some guns, and I like to shoot for fun, but I probably only do that once a year. The majority of my money goes to bills and school.

You guys have any hobbies you spend a lot of money on. I wouldn't be opposed to dropping some coin on something I loved, but I don't really have a hobby I love. I know someone on here is into shoes (I think Reaper), but I can't remember. I know some guys are into cars.

If you do spend some coin and want to talk about new purchases or anything post it up. I need to buy some tires for my 63 Buick, but I will do that in the spring. I would love to get an AR-15, but will never spend the money.

*I will say however that I have spent some money buying up books on self-sufficient living/homesteading/small farming. I love the idea of having land and being as close to fully self-sufficient as I can. I am stocking some money away for a house and some land in the near future.

I do running races. The races typically run me $60 to $90 per month, and then I spend maybe $300 a year on shoes and shorts and stuff. The big-ticket items are a couple of trips a year for races in other states (maybe $600 each on average), some hotel nights for races within driving distance (another $500 per year), and this year I bought a GPS watch for about $250.

So I guess overall it costs me about $3,000 a year. Man, you just got me depressed. However, the travel stuff is fun and the out of state running is almost an excuse for the travel instead of the other way around.

I picked up a golf cart from a course that was closing and am going to completely tear it apart and do a rebuild on it over the next couple of months. I'm thinking of making it Chiefs red with a couple of Arrowheads on the sides and the retired Chiefs numbers on it and such but that's about it. I probably won't have but $2k in it when all is said and done, I don't have a whole lot of hobbies.

AR15's are fun but once you deck out a few of them it gets old. I like tools, food, shoes and recreational sports. I do triathlons. Holy crap, what a drain on the pocketbook.

I bought a middle-of-the pack tri bike USED and it was $1,800. There are bikes that will run you close to $10K
One of the races I did last year cost $225 just to enter
My wetsuit retails for $499, but I won it (thank goodness)
I just spent $100 on new tires for my bike
Race apparel probably averages over $100 (and you can't just have one kit!)
I have another few hundred dollars worth of training clothes
Running shoes $100+
Bike shoes $100+
Garmin watch $300
Swim goggles $30
Bike Pump $50+
Bike Helmet $50+
Sunglasses $100
I bet I've spent over $200 in nutrition this year (energy gel, gatorade, salt caplets, etc)

I don't even have a power meter for my bike ($1,000+) or race wheels ($800 - $3000 or so)

Also doesn't count gym membership for pool access.

I have several books on wilderness and primitive living. I guess it's one of my hobbies. I make fire bows and try to start fire with them. I play around with flint knapping to make rock tools. I haven't tried one yet, but I've read up on snare and figure 4 traps. And there is all sorts of info on shelters, primitive cooking, foraging, tool making, etc. I find it fascinating that these methods worked to keep people alive 10,000 years ago and feel sort of "connected" to use them today. Im not doing it for when the SHTF,and I'm not a prepper either. It's just an interesting hobby to me.

Pond supplies if I'm doing an installation. But obviously this is a pretty rare expense.

Table tennis definitely eating up a pinch of my budget. I'm kinda an equipment junkie and like trying different rubbers & blades. Good thing is they're generally not that expensive... At least the ones I try.

You could easily drop $150 on a blade alone and $80 per rubber (keep in mind need one for the forehand & backhand) if you get some top of the line gear. To me that's nuts.

Yeah Racing is expensive huh?

Question..do you get any prize money for Tri's? Sponsors?

There's a little bit of money in it if you're good enough to go pro or damn close to it. The winner of the amateur race at the Hy-Vee tri this year won a Mini Cooper.

Even most of the pro's have to work a 2nd job or really scrape by, though.

And I'll never be mistaken for a pro. I work pretty hard to finish in the middle of the pack.

Nah. Though I stick to dirt/dune riding. You couldn't pay me to ride a bike on the street. Maybe you live in a small town and it's different there.
At least here in the city there are way too many shithead drivers that aren't looking out for bikes. It doesn't matter how good a rider you are.

I've been down 3 times, once pretty serious (since 1985). I ride mostly back roads at a close to legal pace and save the more spirited stuff for the track where they have wide run off's and medical care on site. $125 for a 20 minute session every hour? Nice way to spend a saturday/sunday.

Track riding sounds very cool. When I lived in Colorado they had the super bike races at the speedway. Those things are balls out fun to watch.

We ride sand around here. I mostly stay on the quad but I have an old 1982 Husqvarna CR that I take out and beat on every now and again.
I'd love to ride a touring bike out on the open road. I just wouldn't ever ride on the highways here in town.

I grew up on quads and bikes. Had an LT250 quad that was built and it was FAST. Had a Hodaka Super Rat too, would love to still have that. First 'legal' street bike was an 85 FJ1100. Amazing bike for the time.

I remember those FJ crotch rockets. They looked like super sleek missiles back then. Hodaka is a tough ass bike. Buddy had one along with a Bultaco and a Harley dirt bike. The Harley weighed about a million pounds but you couldn't stop it with a tank.

Only thing I wouldn't ride was the neighbor's 3 wheeler. I got on that thing once, rode it by the creek and couldn't get the thing to steer right. Ended up lodging the handlebars between two trees and flying ass over applecart endo over the handlebars right into the creek.
Never got on one of those squirrely bastards again.
