Lifting: 5X5 flies, 10X3 hammer curls, endurance curls, shoulder press, 12 minute ab work out

tomorrow will be same cardio and legs and back

Damn how come you're doing so much cardio on lift days?

I do both, it's usually about an hour workout. I am trying to do cardio every single day for the next 3 months. I was really disappointed with myself yesterday when I skipped and took a nap after work instead. I had a small window and I failed. That was disappointing, but I was really tired.

The cardio part takes 29 minutes. I have gradually increased speed over the past 3 weeks...I started at 7, 7.2, 7.4 and struggled...now I'm up to 7.7 and sometimes I feel like I could keep going, but I don't want to over exert myself and make up excuses to not go.

I always hit my arm days...sometimes I'm lazy on leg days. I feel like I'm still getting a decent workout in my legs every day I run, though.

Hootie
01-01-2013, 07:17 PM
I feel like anyone who doesn't enjoy "jogging" for 10-15 straight minutes should really try the 2 minute running hard, 1 minute walking intervals. I used to struggle jogging 1-1.5 miles and now I do 3 miles at an average pace of just under 10 minutes with these intervals, warm-up and cool down. It also keeps you from being discouraged when you get "tired", look down, see you only have 30 seconds until walking for a minute and you can push through it.

My roommate does the intervals but instead of walking he just jumps to the side of the treadmill...I prefer walking, but I've done both. People look at you kind of weird when you do the side thing.

If anyone wants info on Keto, let me know. I'm down to 198 this morning and was 295 a year ago, and 330 at my highest. GoChiefs also lost over 100 lbs doing a similar, if not the exact same diet. I'm probably going with the slow carb diet, which is basically meat or eggs+beans+veggies.

I strongly prefer well seasoned all-in-one recipes to individual portions of food. So here's what I have so far:

1. Chilli
2. Ground beef or sausage + cabbage + onions + cannellini beans fried up in a pan and topped with sriracha sauce
3. Tuna, cannellini beans, tomatoes, olives, onions, olive oil, capers etc.
4. Ham and beans with a side of greens
5. Cassoulet (perhaps modified to remove any hidden carbs)
6. Modified gumbo (no roux :deevee: ) served over beans instead of rice???

What other all-in-one dishes with meat+beans+veggies do you guys have?

I'm set for breakfast (2 eggs + spiced black beans + greens) but still need 12 meals per week (I get a cheat day) for lunch and dinner and need more variety on my list.

I'm like 5 pounds away from what I'd consider my absolute ideal weight right now, but I love this thread. Something in here inspired me to look at a thread I started seven (!) years ago:

Mar. 24: 217 lbs.

I practically leaped off the scale and clicked my heels when I saw that I was under 220 for what is probably the first time in three or four years. I plan on never coming close to that mark ever again.

I started that adventure at 260 or thereabouts. I weigh 150 pounds today. It's not about following the One True Plan™ forever, or anything; you just have to slowly train yourself to make better choices about what your body needs (http://calcnexus.com/bmr-calculator.php) and learn how to forget your inevitable Bad Days along the way. I've lost 20 pounds since mid-2011 with zero dietary restrictions, and was apparently none the worse for the countless times I felt like all of my progress was lost and the next time I stepped on a scale it would shatter under my girth.

It's still pretty hard to believe I'm a "totally healthy young woman," as my doctor put it after my last physical/bloodwork, but it seems like the habits and information I learned while on a super extreme very low cal/carb diet for a few months in 2006 helped me mostly stay on track. It's so weird to look back and realize how much more physically capable I am than I was from 15-22.

Keep it up, ladies and duders. <3

Oh god, I very slowly went from wearing men's XXL shirts and size 40-42 (cargo) pants to a women's M and size 6/8 (28-29) (skinny) jeans. *brain explodes*

I'm watching my carbs this time. I'm not paying attention to stuff that they might be (like yogurt and such), but I'm going to start avoiding stuff like bread, rice, and potatoes whenever possible. If I do eat rice, I will only eat brown rice. If I eat bread, it will only be whole wheat. I know it's not what everyone's doing, but I think this will work for me. Also, I'm trying to avoid high fructose corn syrup like it's the plague. I will be reading labels on that in order to do so.

Other than that, I'm using myfitnesspal again to track calories and exercise. I lost 45 lbs in six months last year. Gained 20 back in the last six months. Without saying my weight, I will say that my goal for this year is to lose 65 lbs. Seeing that I lost 45 in six months last year, I know this is completely doable.

Buck
01-04-2013, 08:21 PM
Yeah, I'm curious about this... shoot us some of your favorite recipes?

Well here are the basics.

Pretty much every type of meat is ok...unless it's been soaking in some kind of sugary marinade or it has been breaded. Most cheeses are fine, as are most green veggies. Also some nuts/seeds like almonds, pumpkin seeds/pepitas are ok.

Most of my meals are a mix of some kind of meat w/ some kind of green, and sometimes cheese is involved. That sounds really basic, but there is so much you can do with that.

Ground beef, for instance, has many things you can do with it. My favorite is to brown and add just a small amount of tomato, some jalapeno, and then some cheese on top w/ pepperoni and pretend I'm eating a pizza.

Another ground beef thing I do is ground beef w/ egg and bacon + hot sauce. To be honest, I sorta just open my fridge and grab what sounds good at the moment and toss it in a pan.

But for the last 53 weeks I've basically been eating pork chops about once a week, steak once a week, chicken twice or three times a week, tritip every couple weeks...and usually with Asparagus. I would say I ate Asparagus 150+ days last year. I just love it, it's my favorite veggie by far, and I love it just as much as I love my favorite meat (bacon).

Of course, eating this way is super cheap, I don't drop $10 at a drive thru for food, ever...and I always have leftovers and I don't have to buy lunch at work.

I shouldn't be surprised by this after long experience, but not going out to eat for a single week has already dropped me 5 pounds. That may fluctuate by the 8th when I officially weigh, but I'm already under 210 again.

Running's been going well so far. 3.1 miles 1/1, 3.2 1/3 and 3.3 1/4. Minimal knee problems. I'll be doing three 40 minute runs this week.

Weather may even allow me on my bike a time or two (although I have some work to do on it first).

Tell me about it. I was wearing running shoes while playing basketball. Fucking stupid, no ankle support. I used to weigh everyday, but I actually found it to be more frustrating. I weigh once per week.I also always found it to be counter-productive. There's something more psychologically satisfying (for me) about losing a pound or two in a week than there is watching myself fluctuate up and down on a daily basis for seven days. It's easier to reach a weekly goal than a daily one, too. It just seemed to create more stress.

I'm in. About 200, will check for sure tomorrow. Haven't ran in about a month or so... Would like to get down around 170 and have a goal of a half marathon by the end of the year. Don't know how realistic that is, my longest distance so far is 5 miles.

Run six miles. If you can run six, you have a half marathon in you. A lot of people can never get to six. That seems to be the magic number.

I had the respiratory-type flu so only puked once and I think it more from the gunk draining in my throat. Mostly had a high fever and didn't feel like eating or drinking anything. I think the weight lost was primarily from being dehydrated so probably won't last as I feel better and rehydrate. :(

That makes me feel good. I got up to 8 before I decided to fuck it off. I almost insulted myself there. The first step to becoming a better person is forgiving past mistakes and growing from them. Today, I exercise. Tomorrow, I exercise more. Soon enough, I will be running 8 miles again. Slowly, but I will run them all and not walk one step. Then, I will complete a half marathon. I will try to do it before the end of the year. In the process, I will need to lose 150-200lbs. If you've never been here, God bless you. You just can't understand it. Who cares? You can always build speed. Personally, I focused on the endurance first. Now, I'm much, much heavier than you, and was also at the time. I weighed 270 when I was running 8 miles. My first 5k I ran a 12:30 minute mile. By the time I was running 8 miles I cut it down to about 11 minutes. And that was at 270. Focus on the endurance, and challenge the fuck out of yourself and the speed will come.

I don't normally advocate taking fitness advice from a 400lbs man, but I have some experience in this.

right now I am doing intervals and I do a little less than 10 minutes per mile for 3 miles. At this point my routine is getting a little bit easy. I'm thinking of either increasing speed and sticking with 30 minutes of cardio or maybe adding 2-4 more intervals into my routine.

Agreed.

I'll have to start pushing myself more. This last week felt like a breeze compared to when I started a month ago, and I've been gradually increasing speed. (From 7.0 to 7.7).

I think I'll start with 7.7 and get up to 8.0 and add an extra interval and see how I feel today.

I'll be working up to 6 miles, that is my goal simply due to time. I can get to a 8 minute mile, so 6 miles with warm up and cool down is about 1 hour. I like your idea of pushing yourself faster though, as last time I was fit I was going a little faster, but never pushed to get down to something like a 7 minute mile. Let's do this Mr. Floppynuts.

Saul Good

how many minutes per mile should I average with 6 miles? Is 10 good?

I'm far from an expert, but I can tell you what works for me.

When I run, I set a pace in my mind that I know I can keep. I don't try to run my absolute fastest, at least not very often. For me, trying to get my best time is like maxing out on the bench press. There is a place for it, but not every time.

I don't concern myself with my average time. I want to set myself on cruise control so that every mile is run at the same speed. (If I'm running six miles, my fastest and slowest WILL BE within fifteen seconds of each other.) If that means my fastest time for six miles averages ten minutes per mile, I may run at a 10:15 pace just to make sure that my last mile is the same speed as my first mile.

While I can't say what a good pace is for anyone else, I can pass along something that happened to me when I started running (just last spring). I was running with another beginner, and I am a better athlete than my running partner, so I had to adjust my pace a bit so I didn't get way ahead. After a while, I started having knee problems. This kept up until I ran with an experienced runner who watched me run for a few miles and then said "keep up" before taking off. I had to damned near sprint for about a half mile to keep up, but my knee pain went away.

Afterwards, he told me that I had been running too slow (about a 10:15 pace iirc), and that I was essentially running with the gas and brakes on at the same time. Running with a slower partner had caused me to slow myself down every step and was exerting pressure on my knees. Speeding up to a 9:00 pace was much easier on my body and wasn't much harder for my lungs.

My advice would be to find a pace that works for you and let yourself naturally get faster. If you run six miles at a ten minute pace and feel like you have energy left at the end, try 9:45. Just make sure that you know your marks ahead of time. By that, I mean that you should be at 2:26 after a quarter mile, 4:52 after a half mile, 39:00 after 4 miles, etc. Make a game of it.

I like to run outside, and I know every inch of the path I run most often. I know the fence post I need to hit at 2:30 if I want to run a pace of 8:45. I know the scratch in the pavement at 27:30. I always thought I was weird that way, but I've talked to several runners who are the exact same way.

In the end, it's really about what keeps you going. From a results standpoint the distance matters WAY more than the speed.

Eventually, you'll hit a point where that is virtually impossible. Generally, that's about the time you can run 6+ miles without walking. If you find your pace, you'll get to six...seven...eight...and feel like you can just keep going forever...and that's because you can. You don't have to feel like trash afterwards in order to have a great workout, IMO.

Very true on all counts. Pacing is the key with running. The first few months, when I had trouble doing 2 miles at a time, every run was death and I felt totally gassed after every run.

Now I can hit a 9 minute per mile pace and run pretty much forever. I ran my first 5k in September of last year and I'm signed up for a half marathon already this year. Being 50 pounds lighter than I was last year definitely helps this, but dogged persistence is the key to getting used to running distances.

The key for speed, once you're acclimated to running, is to integrate speed workouts into your running/workout regimen. I power walk once a week and also try to swim once a week to change up the same old, same old routine, along with some speed/interval routines.

Your times will get better, but it's like losing weight; just fight through the plateaus.

This may seem counter-productive but it's worked for me: the best way to improve my speed has always been to stop worrying about it and focus on the distance instead. Once I get to a certain point (right now I'm just under 3.5 miles, it's that time for me...) I lose my watch, and work on running a little further every day. The watch is great when I'm doing interval work, but once I finally get into long distances, it can really **** me up. Sort of the same way that getting on the scale every day can. I focus too much on what kind of time I'm running, get discouraged if I feel like I'm going slower than I want, or push too hard early and gas out late, even just stare at the watch for a half hour. Which is like torture. So I take it out of the equation. It lets me just focus on the running itself, and I can lose myself in it. Every so often I'll time the run just so I have a general idea, but it seems to help me to focus on where I'm running, and not how long I'm running.

Now, I run outdoors. Can't do that so much on a treadmill, so people's mileage will vary (I can't run on a treadmill at all; I'd rather be waterboarded). But this approach got me from @13 down to @9 last year.

I only wear my watch to track my distance. I could care less about the speed. My goal is still to be burning calories, and I'm better off running 10 minute miles for an hour than running 8 minute miles for 40 minutes or so.

Organized races are the only time that I really track my pace/speed during the actual run.

I got too used to that feeling. I had to go to the doctor monthly to have my blood pressure checked before he'd give a script for the following month. I eventually decided to have him wean me off of it. Yes, I lost weight, but I didn't like feeling like I was becoming addicted. Plus, I felt like I was cheating.

5-6 small meals a day:
Breakfast: Protein shake or fruit smoothie(alternate every day)

Snack

Lunch one of the following: soup / salad / protein shake

Snack

Dinner Post work out: steak/chicken, salad,

Snacks consist of protein bars, fruit smoothie, juice(fresh from juicer), 100 calorie snack packs

My work out will be 20-30 minutes I will be using "10 minute Trainer" which is P90x broken into 10 minute increments.

In 30 days will reevaluate my workout plan. Will likely increase to 30-40 minute workouts.

This worked out for me last year. I lost about 40 lbs in 2 months...I however got lazy, busy, and got off track. I have since put on the weight I lost, plus an additional 10 lbs.

I'm down over 10lbs. My food intake is good, alcohol is slowing way, way, down. Just need to find some consistancy in workouts. Gotta lose my quit.

Awesome job on losing 10lbs!

I would recommend for exercise plan 10 minute trainer. It really is effective. It's more effective if you do three 10 minute sessions versus only one. But still, 10 minutes of workout is better then none, and it's an easy goal to have. Only 10 minutes...you can handle 10 minutes right?

If you'd like the whole kit, it is rather expensive, but check that here
http://www.amazon.com/10-Minute-Trainer-Hortons-Workout/dp/B0016PWG7S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1358370080&sr=8-1&keywords=10-minute+trainer

A cheaper alternative would be to purchase the workout bands at Wal-Mart for $20 and download 10-minute Trainer from your favorite Torrent Site.

From my experience, you can cut quite a bit of weight on diet alone. Imagine how much more you would have lost if you had exercised though! Awesome job, keep up the diet.

Started low carbing today. Decided on low carb since my diabetes seems to be starting to spiral out of control, and I need to get a grip on my blood sugar as quickly as possible, and the less sugars/carbs I put into my body, the better it will be for me.

I have been sick the last few weeks with the crud that has been running around, and even spent the night in the hospital last week...the crud and the diabetes took their toll on me. I am feeling better, but am lacking energy. Hoping the low carb will give me a bit of a boost. My endocrinologist thinks I might have to get some testosterone shots, since my levels were off.

I tried this last year, and failed so miserably, I have some serious doubts about whether I can do this. I feel like I can't let food go, even though I know that is what I need to do.

I know I need exercise too, but I am going to start out slowly. Just walking at first. I think if I start to drop some weight, I will feel like doing more. Walking briskly is apparently good for blood sugar readings, so even after I add in more aerobic exercise/weights, etc., I will probably need to walk at least every other day for the rest of my life....walking is kind of boring, so the thought of that is kind of depressing.

Sorry for my rant, I am just not in a great place when it comes to weight and health...but it is what it is. I know that if I do not get things under control and lose some weight, it is going to kill me someday.

My biggest obstacle is not the sugary sweets...it is the starchy carbs. I love pizza, bread, potatoes, etc.

When I find a good pizza replacement that fills my craving for it, that will make a huge difference! I miss pizza already, and it is just the first day.

I make something that looks like this.

Brown 1 or 2 lbs of hamburger (seasoned to your taste)
Drain
Put back in pan
Add tomatoes / tomato sauce (optional)
Let cook on the burner on low for maybe 10 min (let the liquids in the tomatoes reduce a little)
Cover in mozzarella shredded cheese and pepperoni
Put in oven under broiler for 5-6 min to melt cheese

p.s. In the pic I only used 1 lb of hamburger meat, it was a wide pan though so it looks flat. I cook 2 lbs in that pan now.

That looks really good. Will give it a try, and may even add in some Italian sausage too. Love the way the cheese browned, I think using the broiler must make a big difference.

The browning of the cheese is crucial in any faux-pizza.

Awesome job! Keep up the hard work. I would encourage you to research eating too few calories. If that's all you ate today, I'd be concerned that you're not eating enough calories. Though the immediate results are exciting, it slowly kills your metabolism. Cutting out soda and sweet drinks is an awesome start though! Keep on Keepin' on bro

You can make a reasonable pizza crust out of cauliflower, eggs and cheese. I tried it and was surprised at how good it was, it tastes like cauliflower flavored pizza crust.

Thanks for the link. I am hesitant to try it, because I am not a cauliflower fan, although if enough seasoning and garlic was added, that might hide the cauliflower taste.

Some folks claim there is no cauliflower taste, but with that much cauliflower in it, I am not sure how you can avoid it.

Thanks for the link, found several recipes I am going to have to try out!

I have been winging it the first few days of the diet...figuring out what I want to eat, and then my wife has been running to the store every day to get what I need. Today's goal is plan out some menu and make a complete list of what I need for the next 5-7 days, and hit the store to stock up. Meal planning will help keep me on track better I think, and minimize opportunities to fall off of the wagon.

Got a pedometer yesterday. Starting out with just walking for my exercise, since regular walking has a positive effect on my blood sugar, and I think my back will be more tolerate or more aerobic exercise once I drop some pounds. Went to the YMCA last night and walk for around 90 minutes and put in about 5000 steps. Going to try to make it back there this afternoon if I can.

I'm curious if you can stand for any length of time. I have no idea what a broken ankle feels like or how it really limits you, but I wonder if there's any way you could get an effective cardio workout just with your upper body.

Today I beasted the treadmill and did my usual 6 intervals, and then ended with 3 more 2 minute intervals on 9.0 speed. Ran about 4 miles averaging 9 minutes per mile and feel like I could've kept going but wanted to get my lifts in.

I haven't gone every day like I've wanted to but I've been going 4 to 5 times a week and doing way more lifts than I originally anticipated.

yeah I tend to do the wrap there but I'm sure that's not much better for me considering I usually get it with the buffalo chips and cheese.

I just can't quit their hot sauce.

I also eat a lot of greasy mexican authentic steak tacos so I'm sure those aren't any better for me, either...

but I generally eat two meals a day and don't snack...I can't imagine I get over 3,000 calories per day very often...and some days I stick to healthy subs at Subway and I no longer drink regular soda and haven't for months...coffee, diet and water.

eating has never really been a problem for me...I do over-drink but I've noticed dramatic changes ever since I started running...my endurance in flag football is off the charts now...I've never smoked either so that's a plus.

I'm not going to read though this whole thread, so sorry if this has been mentioned before. I have a history of weight problems and experience with massive weight loss, as well as the weight gain that often creeps back afterwards.

After having lost over 100 pounds and then gaining back 30-40lbs of it, I've had a good amount of success recently with this app (http://www.myfitnesspal.com/mobile). I've found that if when I take it seriously and write in everything that I eat (and whatever exercise I do), I meet my goals a lot more frequently. I've lost a solid 10 lbs over the last couple of weeks just by using it. It's a nice little tool for holding yourself accountable for what you eat and what you do.

270 for me, plus I get to have an MRI on my skull, since my blood work came back from the doctor, and apparently my pituratary (sp) gland is probably very little, if any, testosterone.
Doctor seems to think that that could be a factor in my body being insulin resistant. I have also read that having low T levels can not only cause fatigue, but cause weight gain (and thus prevent weight loss). Like dieting and exercise aren't hard enough as it.

Keeping my chin up though. Did not walk as much as I wanted this week, so I need to hit the Y today and get a few miles in.

Had some MAJOR setbacks this month. Not going into detail here, but if we're friends on Facebook you may have saw something about it. I yanked some of it down. 396. Hoping for a better February as I believe those issues are resolved, but not yet sure.

396?

i started at 398 a few years ago...

we've lost it before, we can lose it again, eh?

Have not weighed in two weeks. Lifting has totally messed up weight vs fat loss correlation in my head. But...Have gone from tight 38 waist jeans to 36 comfy since Dec 6.

Only one pound off this week down to 181.

I gained back 2 lbs between Saturday and Sunday last week (I was probably a little dehydrated when I clocked in at 182 last Saturday). Added 2 more pounds on my cheat day. I dropped own to 183 within a couple days and held steady there until this morning's weigh in. A lot of up and down along the way, but I'm still down 8 lbs overall.
