WASHINGTON (AP) — Football's first fan isn't sure he'd let his son play the game, in light of the impact it takes on its players.
"I'm a big football fan, but I have to tell you, if I had a son, I'd have to think long and hard before I let him play football," President Barack Obama tells The New Republic.
"And I think that those of us who love the sport are going to have to wrestle with the fact that it will probably change gradually to try to reduce some of the violence," Obama said. "In some cases, that may make it a little bit less exciting, but it will be a whole lot better for the players, and those of us who are fans maybe won't have to examine our consciences quite as much."
In an interview in the magazine's Feb. 11 issue, Obama said he worries more about college players than he does about those in the NFL.
"The NFL players have a union, they're grown men, they can make some of these decisions on their own, and most of them are well-compensated for the violence they do to their bodies," Obama said. "You read some of these stories about college players who undergo some of these same problems with concussions and so forth and then have nothing to fall back on. That's something that I'd like to see the NCAA think about."

People will mock this because Obama's saying it and people are insane and seem act like frothing rabid morons about anything he says, but the storm is probably coming.

I don't know if it was posted here, but this week they found CTE in former football players who were still alive. Not a good sign. I really wonder what the game will be like in 20 years. I've mentioned this before but one of the doctors behind the Boston U. study about football and brain damage already thinks kids under 14 shouldn't play football.

Any parent should have the same thought. If you love your child, you would always consider whether or not you should let them do something that could permanently damage them.

Duh.

Commies, Indonesians and Kenyans want their sons to play soccer and run marathons.

If you love your child, you would always consider whether or not you should let them do something that could permanently damage them.If you are not considering it you are a stupid parent. It is a consideration, a thought that every parent should decide if its right for their kid.

My son played football for years. He had some talent but didn't have the passion to be in the weight room hours and hours and practice 20 hours a week. He felt that just because he could probably play Div 1 football doesn;t mean he has to play. He still doesn't know what he wants to do in life but its going to be something with his brain, not his brawn.

I was dissapointed but that was just being selfish. and now I realize how much better my son's life will be without the threat of CTE. He won't have to have knee replacements, wake up in pain or forget how to get home from the grocery store when he's 50.

A parent that stands in the way of a kid wanting to play football is the stupid one.

I don't think anyone telling another parent how to handle their child on such a thing is right.

Theres a threat of brain damage anytime he drives or goes out and does something. You keep him locked inside?

I disagree with that as well. What if you had a girl and her passion was being a porn star? Or your son wanted to become a Republican? There is just some things you can't let stand.

May I ask what part of the below quote you do not understand?

Yes he was doing that in his own way.

I think you need to ask yourself that.

Theres a threat of brain damage anytime he drives or goes out and does something. You keep him locked inside?Did you not read what I wrote. It was his decision. I wanted him to keep playing football moron.

We talked and then disciplined and grounded him not because of football but he was giving up on something he was good at.

At the end of the day its his life and his decision. We have to respect that and he just has to live with his decisions just like the rest of us adults.

I'm glad the odds of my kid being a good enough athlete to go very far in football are almost nil. is there much danger of CTE in a kid playing peewee through high school?

I'm glad the odds of my kid being a good enough athlete to go very far in football are almost nil. is there much danger of CTE in a kid playing peewee through high school?yes, but its less of a chance. Their is little scientific data that goes over years because the link between minor collisions and CTE is a new discovery.

The recommendation is less than 700 "normal" football collisions per year before college and your brain can recover.
