Black History month celebrates the accomplishments of African Americans. In a way though, its really all of our story. Its the story of the physical, mental, and eventual social rebuilding of a nation. Its our country at its worst during slavery, and our country at its best; passing the Civil Rights bill, and the election of our nations first African American president. February is a time to celebrate our countries history, and to reflect on those who paved the way. Its important to know people of all colors and genders sacrificed their lives for a better tomorrow. Their only reward was the ideal that future generations wouldn't have to make the same sacrifices theirs did; bound by the ideal that future generations would not be hampered by race.

In the spirit of sacrifice, think about what you're doing in your everyday life. Are you making their sacrifice in vein, or are you honoring that sacrifice by being the best person you can be? Our nation is a mosaic of colors, ideas, and faiths. We may come from different backgrounds, but all strive for the same goals. We may have different political, social, and religious views, but we are all united under our flag. We are a nation of immigrants, former slaves, natives, and political refugees, all bound by our Constitution, and the ideals of Freedom.

Never before in human history has a nation tried the grand experiment of different backgrounds and ethnicitys coexisting as equals. Equality is what Black History month represents to me. The ideal that everyone is equal, and we all contribute to the greater sum. Enjoy black history month, and take time to learn something new about African American history. Reflect on sacrifices made before us, and look forward to what you can contribute to the greater whole of our grand social experiment.
