Matt Cassel wasn't out of work long after being released by the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday. The quarterback has agreed to a contract with the Minnesota Vikings, a source confirmed to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

He went 4-5 as a starter in 2011 before hurting his throwing hand late in the season and landing on injured reserve. During the offseason, when he appeared in a celebrity softball game as part of All-Star Game festivities at Kauffman Stadium, he was booed lustily by the crowd.

Cassel will compete for the starting job with incumbent starter Christian Ponder, the source said.

Fox Sports earlier reported Cassel's addition to the Vikings.

Cassel was released by the Chiefs one day after Alex Smith was introduced as Kansas City's new starting quarterback.

Cassel was the first major acquisition by the Chiefs under previous general manager Scott *****, and he was quickly given a six-year, $63 million contract. But after leading the Chiefs to the playoffs in 2010, Cassel struggled to live up to the same expectations.

He sustained a season-ending hand injury two years ago, and then lost his job to Brady Quinn after sustaining a concussion last season, spending the rest of the year as the backup.

The Chiefs had been trying to trade Cassel for a late-round draft pick but, having found no suitors, decided to release him and carve out additional space under the salary cap.

He would have made a base salary of $7.5 million this season.

Cassel started 47 of the 48 games he played for the Chiefs, throwing for 9,549 yards with 59 touchdowns and 44 interceptions. His best season came three years ago, when he threw for 3,116 yards and 27 touchdowns with only seven interceptions, and led the Chiefs to the playoffs.

He seemed to be validating the deal made by ***** to acquire him from New England.

Then everything began to unravel.

The Chiefs fired coach Todd Haley and appointed Romeo Crennel his successor, and Crennel stuck with Cassel last season. But he went just 1-7 in eight games under center, and some fans at Arrowhead Stadium cheered when he sustained a head injury in a loss to Baltimore.

Cassel briefly lost his job to Quinn, regained it when Quinn got hurt, and then lost it permanently when he struggled in a loss to Cincinnati midway through the season.

He took the benching with grace, though, and remained a leader in the locker room.

Tom Powers: New Viking Matt Cassel might be overqualified as a backup
By Tom Powers

Updated: 03/14/2013 07:38:50 PM CDT

The Vikings found everything they were looking for and more in a backup quarterback. Maybe too much more.

Matt Cassel brings solid credentials to our humble tundra. He's had several outstanding seasons and still is just 30 years old. Christian Ponder remains the man, of course. The current regime and Ponder are joined at the hip. But now there is an option. Not a silly option, like calling for Joe Webb. But an honest to goodness, viable alternative for times of trouble.

Look at this way: If Cassel or someone like him were here last season, he'd have seen significant action.

Webb simply wasn't viable. Yet the fans howled for him because that's just the way it is in the NFL. Everyone loves the backup. Wait until you hear what happens if Ponder stumbles this season. The wails for Cassel will be deafening.

That's exactly what Rick Spielman and Leslie Frazier don't want. However, they found out the hard way that it's not a good idea to go into a season without an experienced backup. Now they have a guy, although maybe that guy is a bit overqualified for the role. Cassel doesn't have a particularly strong arm and can't throw much of a deep ball. But he has experience and a real presence on the field.

This isn't to say that Ponder won't get the job done from start to finish. He certainly could, I suppose. But it's safe to assume that the passing game must accomplish more in 2013. Adrian Peterson carried the team in 2012. As good as he is, he can't be expected
to smash records year after year. He needs help.

If Ponder doesn't deliver, well, it won't take long before the yelps go out for Cassel. Now, Frazier will make it clear -- on a daily basis if need be -- that Ponder is the future of the franchise. Heck, he fought off Joe Webb questions last season. And he would rather have a root canal without anesthetic than pull Ponder from a game.

The difference this time is that now he actually could pull him if he had to. So that's the elephant in the room. Meanwhile, Cassel no doubt will say all the right things. He probably signed an oath, in blood, not to rock the boat. Yet he's a competitor and, to be honest, a lot of us would be curious to see what he could do. If need be, of course.

If Vikings fans do start screaming for Cassel it won't be the first time. Even before he agreed to terms, Cassel held a unique place in Vikings history, even though that came about rather indirectly.

About four years ago, after the 2008 season, it seemed as if everyone in the Upper Midwest was pleading for Vikings management to acquire him from the New England Patriots. Cassel was coming off a banner year as an emergency replacement for injured Tom Brady. When Brady returned to health, Cassel was expendable.

The Vikings were doing OK at that time under the totalitarian regime of Brad Childress, but already everyone had had just about enough of Tarvaris Jackson. Cassel was the people's choice to replace him and, supposedly, get the team deep into the playoffs.

The problem was that he was going to cost a lot of money. Something like $15 million a year. And Childress still kind of had this thing for Tarvaris. So the Vikings hesitated and the Kansas City Chiefs moved in wielding their checkbook. This was a disappointment for a lot of people here and it lasted about five and a half months. That's when Brett Favre surfaced at Winter Park. And 2009 turned out fairly well after all.

So if they had signed Cassel there would have been no Favre. As fate would have it, Cassel eventually found his way to Minnesota. Circumstances certainly have changed. Some would say he now has a cushy job. All he has to do is practice during the week and holler "Go, Christian" on Sundays.

I can't imagine, deep down, that he's good with that. And it will be interesting to see what happens if Christian Ponder's potential continues to remain largely hidden.

Tom Powers can be reached at tpowers@pioneerpress.com.

Well, somebody's not a fan of Ponder. I like Cassel and I was rooting for us to sign him but guess what, Tom Powers? Cassel has had 2, that's TWO good seasons. Matt Cassel - QB - Vikings

Before signing him, the Vikings made it clear to Matt Cassel that he is not entering a competition with Christian Ponder.
Right or wrong, Vikings GM Rick Spielman is committed to Ponder as his franchise quarterback. Cassel provides experienced depth. "They went 10-6 and he is their starting quarterback," Cassel said. "They said they're looking to bring somebody in with experience ... (and) be somebody who can step in if need be. The fact of the matter is, again, Christian is the starting quarterback."

All true- good quote.

After talking to a few around here

They know they are not getting Joe Montana.

But after the Minn-GB game---they know they need someone OTHER and BETTER than Joe Webb. Cassel will not play unless they are ahead by 50 or Ponder gets seriously hurt.

Ponder took every snap last year. He has AP behind him. He just got Greg Jennings as WR. They are committed to Ponder as a first round draft pick.

This was in the MPLS Star trib today-

Matt Cassel agreed to a contract with the Vikings and went along with the notion that it was to serve as the backup to quarterback Christian Ponder.

Cassel’s remarks included the humorous platitude “that Christian obviously had a great year’’ and summarized the situation thusly: “The fact of the matter is, again, Christian’s the starting quarterback, and I think that we’ll have a great [meeting] room. I’m there to add value.’’

What Cassel didn’t offer was what seems the obvious scenario that brought him to Minnesota:

There wasn’t a team to take him on as a starting quarterback after the past two putrid seasons in Kansas City. The money was going to be about the same, no matter where he went.

So, Cassel looked around to see where there was a good team with a shaky quarterback. He found Example A with the Vikings, a 10-6 playoff team with a starting quarterback who had a run of ineptitude that covered half of his second NFL season.

If you prefer to dismiss this theory and take Cassel’s comments about embracing a backup role at face value … you also believe it was something other than a bald-faced lie when General Manager Rick Spielman said a month ago that the Vikings “had no intent’’ to trade Percy Harvin.

Seattle wound up trading for Harvin, 25 in May, and giving him a five-year contract with $25.5 million in guaranteed money. On Friday, the Vikings gave Greg Jennings, 30 in September, a five-year contract with $18 million guaranteed.

Jennings was asked about Ponder on Friday and said he had studied the quarterback and the Vikings offense, adding: “I had to see what I was getting myself into.’’

Join the club, Greg.

Two years and 26 starts later, no one is certain what Spielman and the Vikings got themselves into when taking Ponder at No. 12 in the 2011 draft and declaring that he would be the long-term answer at quarterback.

The majority of Purple zealots — and local sports media — have bought the idea that the unexpected playoff season of 2012 came due to the greatness of Adrian Peterson, and despite Ponder.

Minnesota has been part of the NFL since 1961, and for 40 years a quarterback had to be extraordinary to play more than a few snaps in his first couple of seasons.

Fran Tarkenton was that extraordinary force from the time he came off the bench in the Vikings’ first game ever. Even then, veteran George Shaw received three more starts and Tarkenton had 10 in that expansion season.

Over the next 44 seasons, the Vikings had two quarterback starts from rookies: One apiece for Ron VanderKelen in 1963 and Tommy Kramer in 1977.

Tarvaris Jackson made two starts in the lost season of 2006. Joe Webb made a pair in 2010 after both Brett Favre and Jackson were hurt.

Add it up: From 1962 through 2010, there were six rookie starts for the Vikings. In 2011, the Vikings spent six games watching the ineptitude of veteran Donovan McNabb, and then went to Ponder for 10 starts as a rookie.

Even Daunte Culpepper, No. 11 overall in the draft and eminently more talented as a QB than Ponder, had to spend a full rookie season sitting before Denny Green went with him in 2000.

What’s the point? This:

As with every position in the NFL, there are more dynamic athletes arriving at quarterback than ever before. There’s also a draft system that generally sends the most dynamic to the neediest teams — i.e., Andrew Luck to Indianapolis, and Robert Griffin to Washington.

That doesn’t mean the old view is the wrong view. That doesn’t mean that allowing a quarterback to figure it out before making a decision on his worthiness is a bad thing.

Back when, Tommy Kramer didn’t really play until his third year in 1979, and he was ready. Ponder is entering his third year. The difference is Ponder has had to play, and many of us have reached the conclusion that he’s not the answer.

We could be wrong. Maybe Ponder will figure it out in Year 3. Maybe he will be ready.

Matt Cassel doesn’t know. Greg Jennings doesn’t know. Rick Spielman doesn’t know. And as rabid fans and media pundits, we sure as Hades don’t know.

Patrick Reusse can be heard 3-6 p.m. weekdays on AM-1500 • preusse@startribune.com

Again-lets move on. Won't see him near KC until they play each other in 4 or 5 years.
