ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Chiefs are in pursuit of free agent Sean Smith, and Kansas City is "clearly" a viable landing spot.Smith was expected to be perhaps the hottest free agent on the market when Tuesday's signing period opened, but that turned out not to be the case. Despite the signing of Dunta Robinson, the Chiefs have been lurking on Smith all along. The 49ers and Eagles are already believed to have dropped out of the running. Smith would make a formidable bookend for Brandon Flowers in Kansas City. Mar 14 - 1:22 PMSource: Adam Schefter on Twitter

Sean Smith a very physical corner who is a beast within 10 yards.

However he can get beat on double moves. He is athletic but is average with his speed.

I think he can absolutely thrive here because he will be the #2 corner and not the #1 as he was in Miami.

If Denver has Wes Welker, Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker, would make sense for KC to have Sean Smith, Dunta Robinson and Brandon Flowers.

He's right; pretty outstanding counter-punch.

Flowers can deal with Decker, who's a technician as a route-runner but isn't physically overpowering. Smith would be a nice counter to Thomas in that he's one of the few guys in the league with the size to match up with him who also has the athleticism to hang with him. Robinson is a great matchup for Welker in that he's physical enough to knock him off routes and spend the day beating him up if necessary (Abdullah then plays FS).

I hadn't looked at it in terms of pure matchups, but the Chiefs secondary actually would match up pretty well vs. the Broncos WRs.

Nnamdi - 6 years is good Nnamdi.

Lots of talent; if we gamble on him and give him good money, I hope we at least have him on a 4-year deal so we can reap the benefits of unlocking that ability (or bail after 3 if necessary).

I'm gonna go with 4/$25.

I'll personally go for Geno. No doubt.

But they might view it differently, they could trade down and take another player, they could draft an LT (which is a travesty imo, but I wouldn't put Dorsey and Ried in the same galaxy as ***** or Carl, yet, and I wouldn't call the Alex Smith Casselesque in any measure).

Would they really want to mess with putting Flowers in the slot? That's a pretty radical re-alignment.

The news which was first "reported" by Smith's former teammate Vontae Davis two weeks ago comes via Smith's agent. He joins Brandon Flowers and Dunta Robinson to form one of the league's better cornerback trios, though Robinson could still end up at safety. It's the same failed strategy Andy Reid adopted in Philadelphia, but he's willing to give it a second chance as division-rival Denver transforms itself into an offensive colossus. Regardless of where Robinson plays, Smith will bookend Flowers on the outside. The Chiefs might not be ready to compete for a playoff spot, but are going to be a far tougher out in 2013.

No it doesn't.

It points to them trading down.

Exactly.

I don't see any way they don't trade down at this point. With Hudson's injury and Allen's suspect play last year, not to mention Lilja's retirement, the Chiefs clearly need to take some linemen, no question. And while I think it's pretty apparent that O-Line is probably where they're going with their first, I can't imagine they aren't going to take a 'bad' trade down which would allow them to get yet another potential interior lineman in the 2nd.

They have to be maxed on the cap and they still have 3 clear holes (ILB, RT and either C/G...maybe both). They need the ammo in the trade down to fill those holes in the draft.

They can't just take Joeckel and call it a day; they're going to need another immediate contributor and I think they'd be fine moving down, taking Lane Johnson and then adding that 2nd round pick as an absolute worst case scenario.

I don't think Welker's any better than Decker. Robinson can hang with him in the slot just fine.

I don't see that. Robinson can't cover Welker. Smith is too soft to stop Thomas. When it comes to facing Denver, it's going to have to be the pass rush that wins the day for the Chiefs.

This is going to seem like a defense of Pioli, but it's meant as a more general thing. Deals are easier to make at lower prices this year, because of the flat cap and all the resultant cuts. Very few contracts have really bucked that trend even though we've just been through what's usually the big spending part of free agency.

My guess would be Dunta plays FS next to Berry.. right?

No way; leave him at nickel - put Arenas at FS; Arenas is a liability on an island in man coverage, and he's terrible in the slot as well. But he's not completely horrible in zone coverages, because he is smart and has some knack for being around the ball - he's heady, and could possibly work as FS.

We'll see plenty of 3 and 4 WR sets anyway...can't have enough DBs in this league, period.

As I said Friday night, Chiefs were still interested. Saturday morning when they talked to Canter, he wanted 8 million a year.

Chiefs told him that won't happen, and they backed out and sent the info to Mike Florio that they were no longer interested.

Smith had interest from SF, Detroit and Philly but all kept insisting on the 8 mill in the early part of Tuesday. When other comparable corners signed for 5, th Eagles signed Fletcher, the Lions kept Houston and the 49ers shifted their focus to Nnamdi.

Chiefs called Canter Tuesday night and re-opened talks now that the price tag was coming down. Smith never took a visit on Tuesday night like was reported.

They cut Cassel this morning because they got to a comfortable number with Smith and needed the space.

Chiefs all along said they were in the 6 mill ballpark and Canter made the numbers work. Smith entered this seeking a 5 year, 40 million dollar deal with 24 mill guaranteed and got 3 for 18 with 11 guaranteed.

Love the signing, and the complete change of approach toward free agency with the Chiefs organization. It doesnt guarantee that they will have success because of it (ask Dan Snyder), but it is nice to see them doing something other than sitting on their hands while millions of cap dollars sit untouched.

I wish that there were a surefire lock for a QB choice for them to draft at 1 so we could finally get our own QB, but it looks like its just not in the cards. I feel like if Reid thought any of those guys were worth it, Alex Smith wouldnt be here.

I hate that this is like, the 4th effin QB we've gotten from SF to try to get ourselves a leader on offense. In any case, Im putting my faith in Reid to get the most out of this guy.

Whatever the case, its going to be a very different team than what we saw last season, and that in itself for me is a damn good start.

In other words, you're a dumb****ing weepy vagina, but please, continue. It makes you an easy target.

LMAO. I'm the one that love to garner attention? I like the moves dipshit, but it's all for not if you are taking Alice Smith into battle as your QB with Chase Fucking Daniel as your back up. Are they better? They damn sure better be. Is it a recipe for playoff success? The chances are slim. Am I going to laugh with Geno throws for 300 yards and 3 TD's a game while Alex throws for 200 and 1 TD while we scored 17.. Fuck yeah.

Chase's cap hit for this year is $3.8 million. That includes his ENTIRE signing bonus. He's basically on a one year deal.

Fuck you, too, you fucking moron.

The difference between 2009 and 2013 is that I was absolutely certain that ***** sucked ass, that his offseason moves sucked ass and that Cassel was a complete failure.

In 2013, the Chiefs are coming off of 3 out of 4 losing seasons with that moron in charge and fired him. They've hired one of THE best coaches in over the course of the past 15 years and a seasoned personnel man from one of the best front offices over the past two decades.

They've made smart moves to fill existing holes without giving up ridiculous contracts, outside of Robinson, these guys are in their mid-to-late 20's (Prime of their careers) and the draft is still ahead.

You and your fucking dumbass cronies will just continue to bitch and moan and cry like fucking weeping vaginas because the Chiefs chose Alex Smith over Geno Smith.

I'm fucking sick of you and your crew's constant whining, so expect to be called on it, you dumb motherfucker. Do us all a favor and take a walk into the Pacific Ocean this afternoon and never return, okay?

If Denver has Wes Welker, Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker, would make sense for KC to have Sean Smith, Dunta Robinson and Brandon Flowers.

Yep. It would make sense regardless. You need to have as many cover guys as you can.

I'll let it play itself out, but if they are actually thinking Alex Smith for 3-4 years then it's 100% bad move. I like every thing else they are doing at this point, but unless they go QB in first I'm still going to have a sour ass taste in my mouth. Especially if the other teams are coveting Geno in the top 5.

Also not I will mock fully anyone that sites their or a buddies playing experience as a way to validate an opinion.

Right. Because I stated in February, even before the Alex Smith trade, that the Chiefs would not draft a QB at 1.1. And because I didn't call Geno Smith by his disgusting nickname that you and you fellow cronies called him, I'm outdated.

Thanks for proving to everyone that you're a clueless fucking idiot.
