Version 2.0

Post all of the Training Camp/Pre-season updates, relevant tweets, and general thoughts in this mega-thread.

If something happens to be particularly newsworthy, feel free to start a thread and discuss it there. Don't be a dickbag and "Q" up their thread, unless some idiot posts something like 5 days late.

<a class="twitter-timeline" href="https://twitter.com/ChiefsCamp/lists/kcc" data-widget-id="492413653887356928">Tweets from https://twitter.com/ChiefsCamp/lists/kcc</a>
<script>!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0],p=/^http:/.test(d.location)?'http':'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=p+"://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");</script>

WHEN POSTING TWEETS - When posting Tweets, instead of just copying the text, you can actually embed the tweet by clicking "...More" (right next to the timestamp of the tweet)-> "Embed Tweet" -> Copy the embed code, then paste that into your CP post. It will make the thread look a lot cleaner and we won't have to keep clicking away from the website to see the content. Thanks in advance.

I really don't want to see DAT running the ball and taking hits from 300 pound linemen. I want to see him out in space, getting screen passes, and running routes against LBs and Safeties. I'll hold my breath every time he has to take the ball up the middle, which should be never.

DAT's specialty at Oregon was stretch strong side runs out of shotgun. He is good because his feet are so quick/choppy but also has long speed.. that he can stretch the run or turn up field off the tackle.

49ers LB core, all healthy > Chiefs and it's not really close

As for RBs, you can argue for several teams and I don't think there is that much of a disparity.

Eagles (McCoy, Sproles, etc)

Seahawks (Lynch, Turbin, etc)

49ers (Gore, Hyde, James, etc)

Vikings (AP, Mckinnon)

Bills (Spiller, Jackson, etc)

We are among the best at those positions though.

49ers LB core, all healthy > Chiefs and it's not really close

As for RBs, you can argue for several teams and I don't think there is that much of a disparity.

Eagles (McCoy, Sproles, etc)

Seahawks (Lynch, Turbin, etc)

49ers (Gore, Hyde, James, etc)

Vikings (AP, Mckinnon)

Bills (Spiller, Jackson, etc)

We are among the best at those positions though.

Bengals and Niners have better LB corp than we do(until Ford proves his worth)

but I dont think any team has better backs than us. I like Knile Davis a lot though

PFF: Chiefs/Bengals (https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2014/08/08/refo-bengals-chiefs-preseason-wk-1/)

Kansas City — Three Performances of Note

As Good as Advertised

After 13th overall pick Aaron Donald, the second most impressive pass rusher at the Senior Bowl was outside linebacker Dee Ford. The Chiefs 23rd overall pick did his best to show that performance wasn’t just a fluke. Ford picked up a pass rushing grade of +3.7, and a run defense grade of -1.4 on 57 snaps against the Bengals. Those grades are eerily similar to his Senior Bowl splits. The run defense is concerning, but it was more of a discipline problem than a talent deficiency. Most of Ford’s snaps, however, came against backup tackles and it will be worth watching if he ever gets a chance to run against starters as the preseason moves on.

Good to be Back

Malcolm Bronson hadn’t played in a competitive football game since 2012, but you couldn’t have guessed that by watching him play last night. The Chiefs safety was flawless in coverage. He didn’t allow a catch on two targets and took home an interception with a lightning quick break on an out route intended for Brandon Tate early in the third quarter. It was all a long time coming for the McNeese State product that tore his ACL his senior season and spent all of 2013 rehabbing on the Chiefs practice squad. With the rave reviews from practice, and a ridiculous +2.7 grade in 29 snaps on Thursday, Bronson could be in line for serious snaps when the regular season rolls around.

Much Needed Weapons

The Chiefs offensive skill players outside of Jamaal Charles were amongst the worst in the league last season. Not a single other wide receiver, tight end or running back with significant playing time had a positive receiving or rushing grade. That is why seeing Travis Kelce(+1.1 receiving grade) and De’Anthony Thomas(+1.4 return grade) each score long touchdowns must have been a sight for sore eyes for Chiefs fans. Kelce, a third round pick in 2013, showed no signs of wear after microfracture surgery cost him his rookie year. The 6’5”, 260 pound tight end put a filthy move on Lavelle Westbrooks to get open late in the second quarter and then accelerated away from 5’10”, 205 pound Isiah Lewis for a 69 yard touchdown.

It was an impressive display of athleticism, but it wasn’t quite on DAT’s level. The Oregon rookie was hit by Dre Kirkpatrick as he caught a punt at his own 20 yard line at the end of the first quarter. The former track star, unfazed by the contact, looped towards the right sideline and blazed by multiple Chiefs in the process for an 80 touchdown return. Thomas only played three snaps from scrimmage Thursday, but I would expect that number to climb in upcoming games.

Game Notes

- Conner Vernon caught his first professional touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter only to find out today that he had been cut by the Bengals.

- Despite recording a flashy unblocked sack, first round pick Darqueeze Dennard (36 snaps) struggled in all other facets of the game. The corner missed two tackles and yielded 20 yards on two of three targets for a -2.7 overall grade.

- 8 of the 11 backup linemen for the Chiefs finished with positive grades (Rishaw Johnson, J’Marcus Webb, and Jeff Linkenbach only negatives) and center Eric Kush led all Chiefs with a +3.5 overall grade.

PFF Game Ball

Malcolm Bronson did his best to shut down the Bengals air attack, collecting a +3.7 coverage grade in his first NFL game. For that reason he gets this game ball even though there was reason for excitement from a handful of players.

I remember he put Darren McFadden out once or twice as well. Those were pretty routine tackles, though, from what I remember.

I'm talking about completely blowing somebody up. Not even injuring them but really hurting them. Making them hesitate coming across the middle or stepping into the open hole. Know what I'm saying?

“I think we’ll have some different packages maybe where we can give him a little bit of a break and keep him fresh for the entire year,” Sutton said.

I rewatched over the weekend, and actually Fisher did a pretty good job. It was so strange on the sack... he held his ground really well on the initial rush, and then somehow just got THROWN to the ground. As if he was more than powerful enough front to back but side to side was a rag doll.

He did come back and have really solid blocking on the next series, though. I'd like to see the guy not give up a single sack for the rest of the preseason, and I'll call this one a fluke. But the clock is absolutely ticking on him.

Chiefs Training Camp Report, 8/11/2014
Aug 11, 2014 -- 12:52pm

By @TJCarpenterWHB

NOTES:

- Sean Smith had high highs and low lows today in practice. He got a couple INTs and then was flat out dominated off the ball a couple times by Donnie Avery

- Ron Parker and Sean Smith were put in with the first team defense on a number of 11 on 11 drills today

- Chase Daniel continues to struggle at camp throwing interceptions, but that is not unlike his performance from TC last year.

- Frank Zombo may be the odd man out in LB corps, Dezman Moses injury may change that, but as it stands right now, Outside Linebacker group consists of Hali, Houson - Ford, Martin - and then if Zombo were to make the team, he would be the 5th OLB on the 53.

- Albert Wilson continues to play well, I still believe Frankie Hammond will make the team over Wilson, but camp is long and right now Wilson looks like the more productive of the two. Kyle Williams also continues with strong performances at camp.

- Albert Wilson also may prove to be a better WR option next season than DeAnthony Thomas, who has smaller hands and less weight on his frame.

- DAT is clearly the fastest football player in pads they have at camp. I asked Adam Teicher about how Thomas compares to Dante Hall, who has the same height and about 10-pounds heavier. Teicher said Hall was a stockier player than Thomas, but wasn't nearly as fast as DAT is. Whether he plays on offense much remains to be seen, but I think he'll be a gamer on special teams.

- DAT also worked on kickoff drills today as the catch man on several "Music City Miracle" drills. They did a shorter version of the play as well that involved Knile Davis as the catch man.

Yea, i watched it a couple of times and it appears that Allen got pushed back into Fishers legs as he was blocking undercutting him enough that he went down.

Fisher still should have been stronger but it wasn't as bad at it looked.

Allen still seems to have issues. As i said in another thread, i hope our entire Oline interior gets reworked. Some of our backups looked good. Maybe Allen would be better at OT. Dunno.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- A daily review of the hot topics coming out of Kansas City Chiefs training camp at Missouri Western State University:
•The Chiefs continued to get a long look at young defensive lineman Jaye Howard, who has been starting in place of the injured Mike DeVito, who has a broken hand. Howard received the second-most snaps of any Chiefs defensive player in the preseason opener against Cincinnati, and from all appearances Howard will play a lot in Sunday night's game against the Panthers in Charlotte. They kept Howard on their active roster all season last year after claiming him off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks, and even though he played in just three games they obviously they saw plenty of talent to work with. They may be seeing the payoff. Howard had a sack and was second on the Chiefs in tackles against the Bengals.
•Developmental quarterback Tyler Bray continued to flash the talent that makes him an intriguing prospect to the Chiefs. He has the best arm among the four quarterbacks in camp and he showed it off on a pair of back-to-back plays. He threw a deep ball that was well-placed between defenders that A.J. Jenkins couldn't quite catch up with. Bray then threw a dart for a big gain to Frankie Hammond Jr.
•For veteran help at safety, the Chiefs turned to Jonathon Amaya, who participated in practice on Monday after taking the roster spot of the suddenly retired Steve Gregory. Amaya played in 38 games over three seasons with the Saints and Dolphins. After Gregory left camp, the Chiefs had precious little NFL experience at safety behind the starters, Eric Berry and Husain Abdullah. Amaya could still conceivably make the regular-season roster, but that could depend more on how young safeties like Daniel Sorensen and Malcolm Bronson fare the rest of training camp and the preseason.
•Another practice session came and went with rookie Cairo Santos doing all the kicking. Incumbent Ryan Succop has a sore groin and hasn't kicked since the Cincinnati game. The Chiefs haven't gone with a rookie kicker to begin a season since 2009, when Succop entered the league. But that possibility is looking more and more likely.
•The Chiefs practice again on Tuesday at 9:15 ET/8:15 a.m. CT.

The surprise of Zach Fulton has really, really, really helped to turn this OL debacle around. If we can seriously get an upgrade at RG out of a rookie sixth rounder - and by all accounts, that's what happened - then it goes a long way to securing depth.

If you add The Ballad of Ricky Henry to that mix at LG, then suddenly the options at OL depth look much better.

Normally guys like him (competent vets) come in and start. Take Mays for example. The difference is that he wasn't brought in to play DE in the 3-4 imo. He was brought in to play DT in the nickel. Last year we lined up in the nickel around 50% of the time. Mark my words. He will be an impact player in the nickel and a back up 3-4 DE. You are getting your panties in a wad for nothing. He wasn't brought in to start in the 3-4. That was never the plan.

Lovely.

Safety Eric Berry arrived for practice in helmet and full pads, apparently ready for another day at the office. But Berry left the field early in the workout and didn’t return until his teammates were almost finished -- this time without helmet and pads. Coach Andy Reid said Berry has tendinitis in his injured heel. “He works a few days and then it bothers him and it inflames a little bit," Reid said. “Then we back off." Berry didn’t play in last week’s preseason opener against Cincinnati, and this routine calls into question his ability to withstand the rigors of a full season.

This is excellent. I was worried the hammy would keep Hemingway out too long.

How many picks has Chase thrown in camp? It is great our CB's are getting plenty of work catching his floaters, but two or three a day seems to be the norm.

Me to. He was the guy I really thought would win the slot job and be good this year.

I like Jordan Mathews for rookie of the year. I liked him before but really like him now. Reports are that he is killing it and is already the best WR on the Eagles.

But he apparently roasted Revis yesterday, still would've loved to grab him... just dont think his interest was here.

Vance Walker is a NT. He's Poe's backup.

Paying Walker over 4 million a year on average to be a backup along the line is money wasted.

Will he be a back up if he is the nickel package and we run that formation 50% of the time? Do we really have a base formation anymore?

Uh... he's not making $4 million a year. His salary is 730k with $1M per year in signing bonus.

If he saw his last two years - which he won't, BTW - his average would be $3M a year over the entire life of the contract.

Tyler Bray needs to see reps with the twos in preseason. It's time for him to take the next step.

Aaron Murray didn't seize the reps he got like I thought he would. The potential is there but he is going to need time to improve accuracy.

He signed a 3 year, 13.75 million deal with 3.75 million guaranteed.

If he plays it out, his yearly average is over 4 million a year. I don't care what his year 1 cap hit is.

He's overpaid if he's playing as a rotational backup player.

Is that official? I thought they couldn't do that after they decided not to put him on PUP? He would have to really get hurt and the NFL would have a close eye on it. The Star wrote about it before camp.

It's not official yet, but they can IR Murray for his injury he had last season at Georgia even if he plays the entire preseason (at least that is what the radio fellas say). Because of that, I can see it going down that way. They're not ready for Bray to be anything other than the #3 guy, but they don't want to lose either Daniel or Murray for this season.

It sounds like the KC decision makers thought Bray wasn't going to progress like he did this past summer through OTA's to the present( the leaked rumor that Bray was having problems assimilating the playbook was indicative to that ).Murray was the insurance policy for another development QB who's a complete system's dependent prospect who has the mental aspect for the position.

Mathews started for Maclin last night and was targeted nine times. He had nine receptions for 104 yards. Maclin is going to end up in the slot soon and Mathews will win ROTY imo. If Dee Ford sucks, we are going to be pissed we didn't take Mathews.

Based off what you have seen from the Chiefs the past 20 years, what makes you think they would even choose the right QB if they did take a QB early?
