Priest ran all over Parella and Co. last year, so that shouldn't be a problem when we play the Faiders, and he will run all over Dalton and co... ;)

Honestly,
Is the free agent pool really weak or what? I can't believe all the debate over this guy. He has great potential becasue of his age and size, but he hasn't done squat. The contract he received seeme like a lot of $$$ but it's really not. The Donx did the deal right. IF Dalton lives up to the hype, he will be rewarded. ;)

Taco John
03-20-2002, 11:57 PM
The great thing about this signing...

Prior to the Dalton signing, we were $3.37 million dollars under the salary cap.

Dalton is only going to cost us about $900,000 in his first year...

In order to get Dalton on the team, Keith Washington restructured his deal to save the team $500,000 this year.

So after signing Dalton, our cap figure went down about $400,000, for a grand under the cap number of about $3 million dollars... ($2.97 million)

Not bad.

philfree
03-21-2002, 12:30 AM
Dalton won't even see Preist until he's heading back to the sidelines after he scores a TD. When I think Dalton I think Tom Barndt. Not bad but not a difference maker.

Actually, Dalton won't be the one to determine whether he stops Preist or not. It's Roaf, Waters, Weigaman, Shields, and Tait. We'll see who wins the battle. I'm laying my money on KC's O-Line over the Donkeys D-Line.

Hey how is the physical upgrade program going. Still making progress.

I've been slacking off working out for a couple of weeks. Got hooked on Freelancer, and have done little other than sit in front of the computer playing it. Pathetic, I know, but what the hell. It's done, and I can't change it.

The good news - I still continued the diet, which has pretty much become a part of me now. And of course, I still walk a lot.

And I've lost another 10 pounds. Down to 210 now - lowest weight since 1996, when I got down to 190 before piling it all back on.

I can now comfortably wear the 38" waist jeans with a bit of room to spare. The spare tire still bulges over the waist line a bit, but now it's liveable.

That's 50 pounds I've lost since the beginning of May. None of the pants I wore from before I started the diet fit now. I've thrown them all out except for one pair, which are my "reminder" pants. And my pre-diet shirts pretty much look like shit, too. I've slowly started to replenish my wardrobe with non fat-ass clothing. It feels great.

And I did work out tonight (treadmill, lifting, sit-ups). And no friggin Freelancer. I think I finally shook that crack-like bastard. Great game, but I wish I'd never played it. It certainly cost me some valuable time (and two weeks of my life).

When I hook up with you guys in October, I will be under 200.

I gotta find a list of FAs for the last few years...
They signed Pittman from Dallas and he did fine his first year. Chester did fine too, for what they paid him.

I know that Poole and Walker were secondary FAs signed. I don't believe too much $ was comitted to either and they were better than average, nothing stellar. That's part of why they are not there.

Brockermeyer was a failed bit last year, due to injuries for the most part, but he's back at a cheaper rate for depth.

I'll look it up soon for, Can.

Mile High Mania
08-15-2003, 10:11 AM
I couldn't find a site that listed by year, so I looked at the roster...
So, I can't recall which guys were FA pickups that are no longer there, but they've been previously mentioned in this thread.

FA01
Steve B - solid backup insurance
Bertrand B - same
Kelly Herndon - same
Patrick Hape - TE depth

FA02
Rueben Droughns, FB - solid signing
Sharpe - solid signing
Dalton - mediocre year, on the trading block

FA03
Brockermeyer - depth
Plummer - TBD
Gardner- TBD
Flowers - TBD
Ben Kelly - TBD
Heath Irwin - TBD

There have been failures, but the guys above in 01/02 were not big name high dollar signings and they're doing what they are supposed to do.

IIRC, there hasn't really been (other than Dalton) a big $ FA signing... I'm not trying to play dumb here, but I think that's accurate.

We'll soon see how the 03 FA class performs. You are accurate in that there hasn't been an amazing FA find like a Homes (I'll give KC credit), but there's not too much to be ashamed of b/c a lot of the FA signings were for depth.

Hopefully, Denver is learning from the past mistakes with guys like Carter.

enjoy

Following the afternoon practice, Head Coach Mike Shanahan confirmed that the team is looking to trade the defensive tackle, who joined the team via free agency in 2002 and had been running with the first team through most of camp. However, since returning from Houston, second-year man Monsanto Pope, who started one game last year, had received the bulk of the first-team work.

"We're going to trade Lional," Shanahan said. "I'm not sure when it's going to happen. We do feel like we've got some depth at that position. We've got a number of young players that are playing extremely well."

At defensive tackle, those emerging young players include Pope, rookie Nick Eason and Dorsett Davis, who started last week at Houston in place of Daryl Gardener and has displayed a penchant for batting down passes during training-camp practices.

"I think those kids have shown that they're comers," defensive coordinator Larry Coyer said. "The whole deal is it's just a direction we decided to go.

"You would want to say that you feel good about your young players progressing and the way they're working and the way they get after it," Coyer added. "You feel like you've got some speed and some guys that are eager to play, and that's the direction you might want to go."

Shanahan feels that Dalton's trade value might be increased by the work he did in the offseason to shed 37 pounds from his frame.

"Lional's come in here in excellent shape and we think we can get something in return for him since he did play quite well in Houston and he cut off 25-30 pounds and (is) in excellent shape," Shanahan said. "We've talked to a number of teams that have been interested in him, so we'll just wait and see."

------------------------------------------------------------------
If he were good, they would NOT be trying to trade him. WHY would someone trade for the guy if he might get released? Maybe he'll be in such "good shape" that the Donx will cut him early to help him land with another team. Man, I'm dizzy from all the SPINNING... :hmmm:

Here are our FAs, MHM

2003
Shaun Barber
Dexter McCleon
Vonnie Holliday
Chris Horn (doesn't really count, I suppose)
Jason Baker
Darrius Johnson (former Donkey, like Horn, just things for depth)

2002
Willie Roaf (you know very well who he is)
Morten Anderson
Quinton Caver (thought to be a 2nd round bust for the Eagles, now pretty much our b/u OLB
Johnnie Morton
Marc Boerigter
Jonathan Quinn

2001
Priest Holmes
Trent Green
Eddie Kennison
Dan Stryzinski
Ray Crockett
Jason Belser
Glenn Cadrez
Casey Weiggman
Chris Thomas

Of our FAs considered "busts" most of them were depth/developmental guys. Only true starters I'll consider at this point are Stryzinski (a punter) and Crockett (:Lin:) I'm not going to consider Morton a bust yet, since we've been promised he'll get the ball more, and he's moving back to his orginal position, yadda yadda yadda. (Hey, waiting a 2nd year for Trent worked, didn't it?)

I thought that Nick Eason showed that he was a goer, not a comer. Did they find him and drag him back to camp?

I'm all for seeing what the young guys can do...
I'm really curious about the trade, though. I can't imagine he would be so vocal about it if it weren't almost done. It would surprise me if they cut him though.

The cap hit for cutting him is much greater than just trading, correct?

Read the articles ... he's been doing well, I'm not sure what his personal issues were. But, he explained everything to the coaches and team and they have accepted him. So, it must have been pretty serious.

Hopefully, Denver is learning from the past mistakes with guys like Carter.

enjoy

Nothing exciting in that list. Carter was let go, McGlockton was let go, Pittman was let go, Dalton is being let go, etc....you see a pattern here? I know there are others who let go but I can't think of their names right now...plus you passed on Roaf and Turley..oh yeah, Greise...you let him go...that is alot of mistakes/bad decisions and reflective of the problems you have now...in that same period we signed: Roaf, Holmes, Anderson, Bo, Kennison, Weigmann...ALL of which have been good to ****ing great, plus this year's Barber and Holliday, jury still out....we've had a few stinkers- Morton, Crockett...not many though...these moves underly the health of a franchise and will eventually reveal themselves in the W/L column...I could be wrong, but that's my slightly homer take, grounded I believe in verifiable fact.....of course, this doesn't take into account the draft, another subject alltogether.

I know there are other FA failures from you guys, you signed a bunch of people 2-3 years ago that didn't pan out.

It's hard to tell which of us wears the homer hat more often.
KC did well with a few guys, but aside from Holmes and Roaf ... nothing really stellar.

Denver has had some pretty good drafts as of late and that is what I think sets the foundation of a healthy franchise.

I'm not going to get into a pissing match over which team has been better, both have had their moments - good and bad.

The W/L columns will eventually, as you said, tell us which franchise has a healthier foundation. That much we can agree on.

Sorry I have to disagree...Weigmann has been a stud as C for one of the best OL's in the league...great pick-up, Kennison was taken out of a gutter and gives us 50 catches a year, Bo had 8tds last year, and Anderson is simply automatic....that's not homervision, that's production....I see nothing even close on the Donkos side....I'm interested in FA moves because they can reflect the "deperation level" of a team...adding up all your misses and the fact of signing Plummer after just blowing a wad on Griese signals serious desperation to me....again, a homer's take...

Look, call it what you like ... I'll hold off until I see what they get in a trade. If they get a player that can help in the secondary or something like that, then I think it was a 'need' trade. Depends on what they get...

There are teams out there that need a Dalton type of player to possibly start, so why not trade him? Sure, he didn't live up to his hype, but this may be a great scenario for Denver to get something for him.

Let's see what Bo does this year... let's see what Morton does this year.

As long as Denver contends for the division and advances to the playoffs, I don't care how you classify them. :)

I'm looking at Denver's producer's and the reason it is hard to find a dynamic FA success to counter your Holmes, Wegmann and Anderson examples is due to the fact that a majority of Denver's starters were drafted by the team or have been FA success stories for a while.

offense - starters
WR - Rod Smith (UFA Rookie 94), Ed (UFA 95), Lelie
TE - Sharpe (Drafted - FA last year), Carswell & Putzier (draft)
OLine - Ben Hamilton (draft), Nalen (draft), Neil (draft), Lepsis (draft), Brockermeyer (FA 02/03)
FB - Anderson (draft), Droughens (FA 03)
TB - Portis (draft)
QB - Plummer (FA 03), Steve (FA 01)

Hell, that's the sign of a team that builds a potent offense through the draft.

defense - starters
DE - Pryce (draft)
LT - Dalton (FA 02), Pope (draft)
RT - Davis (draft), Eason (draft), Hunt (draft)
RE - Hayword (draft), Berry (FA), McNeal (draft)
LB - Gold, Wilson, Mobley, Pierce (all drafts)
CB - Walls (FA), O'Neal (draft), Spencer (FA), Middlebooks (draft bust)
SS - Kennedy (draft), Ferguson (FA)
FS - Brandon (draft), Flowers (FA)

P - Knorr (FA)
K - Elam (Draft)

So, a lot of the busted FA signings, as I said (aside from Dalton) were depth type of players that didn't pan out.

Say what you want about them, but they have consistently solid drafts each year. After a couple years of Gunther and prima donna Marty (see drafting for size, not talent and not going by what your scouts say, only by hype). Shitty drafts are one thing that have hurt the Chiefs. Vermeil is doing the best he can to rebuild this team through the draft and keep it good that way, but he's basically starting from square 1. In 01, who the hell were they supposed to turn to? Where are they starting? They got Green and Holmes through FA (just call Green a FA) and were left with a draft of many lower picks. Some of these guys are turning out, some aren't.

It's my hope that eventually Vermeil and his predecessor will learn to draft for the future and keep a good team for years to come.

doesn't bother me any... Note that Priest had zero wins against us last year, and didn't get to finish playing in his second game.

The Skins got a good run stuffer who petered out toward the end of the season last year in his first year as a starter. They've got plenty to work with in Dalton, who lost a bunch of weight this offseason to avoid the same pitfall...

You can laugh, but I'll just sweep, sweep it all under the carpet. It would probably help your case if Priest had done anything against us other than get sent to the hospital...

1. Donkos have a supposed monster to stop Priest Holmes
2. TJ announces monster
3. Monster turns out to be an expensive jelly roll and waste of time for denver
