View Full Version : I just cant stand it anymore...

Today was a life changing day for myself and my family.

I was not going to post anything about it but, I just cant stand it.. In Aug of 98 I was attempting to start a personal watercraft, and the thing exploded....The blast broke my back, L1 burst fracture, and completely dislocated my left knee. Anyway, the cause of the explosion was determined to be a spark plug that vibrated out of the cylinder head, thus causing the cavity of the craft to be filled with air/fuel mixture. All I did was push the start button, and next thing you know I'm flying through the air. The craft had just been picked up from the repair shop.

Today, through mediation, I reached a settlement agreement with the Insurance carrier of the repair shop.
I Never filed suit although I did retain a lawyer. It still has not sunk in yet first thing I did was structure annuitys(sp?) for my two sons projected college tuitions (sons are 6 and eight.)

Guys...I'm freaked out!...Sorry for the personal post....Joe

It's good to see that it's working out for you Joe. I never knew that you had been injured before, so I don't think one post about it hurts anything.

Well, you looked pretty good at the Mariners ballgame. I'd have never guessed you had those injuries. I guess things are looking up, though. Congrats on the settlement. I hope you got your just due - nothing more, nothing less. I also admire the fact that you didn't sue them - this culture's downfall will be the lawyers.... http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/frown.gif

FWIW, I have 7 & 8 yo daughters. Keep your boys away from 'em. http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Don't be freaked out, be happy that you can put that event behind you. I'm glad you retained a lawyer and reached a settlement. I hope you've recovered fully...

Joe,
For many of us, we feel that we've found a group of friends, when all we set out to do was find news about the Chiefs and football. So, we've come to expect to hear about these kind of personal things. I'm glad it worked out for you, nd that you could share the news with us.
BTW, got a couple of bucks I can borrow. http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/smile.gif

Phil, physically i feel fine, thats the weird thing I looked at my X-rays again today and wondered why I wasn't still in pain.
My back is doing fairly well, I actually returned to work after I got that **** clamshell brace off. I went nuts when I was laid up for 8 months. But I am proud that I did not have to file suit, we actually settled it like grownups! http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/smile.gif they accepted liability and we just came to an agreement...amazed that that can still actually happen....Joe

Phobia, yeah it sounds like the lawyers really blew it here! http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/smile.gif Not all lawyers are leeches, hell some of us are Chief fans!!

AZChief, I had no idea you were an attorney and I trust you understand it's nothing personal. I have had nothing but poor experiences with lawyers. I guess I shouldn't generalize like that though....

Clint in Wichita

AZ, I took my time and chose a lawyer that is well respected defending insurance companies...He knew their every move. http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/smile.gif

Trust me, I take no offense. I run into more idiot attorneys than anybody and I know society loves to bash us all. I totally understand and agree with you in many cases!

I'm just sittin' back lookin' to reply to posts and that seemed like a natural one! http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/smile.gif

Wew - I'm glad I hadn't already offended someone 20 minutes into the day. Have you ever seen anyone backpedal that quickly? Oh, wait - I guess you probably have to correspond with lawyers as well....

You probably should have let me think you were pissed 'cuz now I'm going to give you grief. http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I'd expect nothing less. I'm usually pretty low profile about my profession on these boards but who cares. I think a couple other people know because of some athletes that got in trouble out here during spring training...

I remember discussing the Al Martin multiple marriages, Mario Bates domestic violence problem, etc. etc. etc.

You're cool w/ me AZ! I've found that lawyers that defend the creeps usually are trying to get my money any way they can. The lawyers that are embarassed to be associated with the rest of the slime are generally the standup ones. I have a 2nd cousin that falls into the latter catergory.

I have not told co-workers or friends and only
certain family members about the settlement, I feel safe talking to you guys about it, however milkman already tried to hit me up for some bucks http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/smile.gif I usually dont post personal stuff, but I am more than a little excited/elated/relieved/happy/freaked out.

AZ, thanks for your kind words, you sound exactly like my attorney http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/smile.gif

BTW, my knee surgery acl/lcl/mcl/pcl was a good result, and so far my back is holding up just fine. Again, sorry for the personal stuff.

What type of practice?

Hey Joe - A similar tragedy happened to my parents Halloween night in '64. They just got the boat out of the shop and gas fumes leaked into the interior of the inboard. My Dad started the engine out in the middle of Tomales Bay and the thing blew up like a bomb. Our friend Bobby Joe was killed and the badly burned 3 others swam a mile and a half to safety. Bobby Joe's wife was 7 months pregnant. We were all so sad that nobody sued anybody.

I'm a prosecutor in Scottsdale. Currently, I'm looking to get into more techonology based work. I took a lot of copyright and cyberlaw classes and would like to jump into the civil practice world. We'll see.

Scottsdale City Court? I guess if we meet at the local library to review the talent, it should all be comped. Babes does comp local civil servants, correct? http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/smile.gif

sd4chiefs
08-23-2000, 12:12 AM
Yeah, sometimes. I know they comp police officers and such at Circle K's and the like. I've never tried at an "entertainment" venue! LOL. I have used it to cut in a few lines at clubs.

Clint in Wichita
08-23-2000, 12:12 AM
Duck, That is a terrible tragedy...I think all inboard watercraft should require a bilge blower. Coast guard regulations inexplicably dont require them in pwc's.

After researching this I found that there is a quite powerful lobby in D.C. protecting pwc manufacturers. IMO any inboard engine should require a bilge blower to get it's certification...pwc's included.

Sorry to hear about your friends tragedy.

I'd love to meet you at a library and do some research sometime. Bourbon St. has a nice selection of "books."

What do you do? Didn't you just start an internet site and vist River Falls or something?<P>

mikey23545

AZ-

I'm a free lance writer and a consultant. I did not get to attend River Falls. I did attend KC/Jax game as a media member, but only after I wrapped up some business in KC that afternoon. I was fortunate that a friend allowed me to use his press pass.

My wife doesn't allow me to read outside the home that often, (and with the library available here, I really don't need to) but sometimes brief outside study is needed. As an attorney, will that line fly?

sd4chiefs
08-23-2000, 12:51 AM
Yeah, that line will work but remember Arizona is a community property state.

I'm out. And Joe, Elvis spikes the ball better than anyone in the NFL. 1st down, third down, he may have even done it on fourth down if he wasn't stopped. http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/frown.gif

Joe,

Pleased to see you have your namesake back.
And props to you in your couragous recovery, that must have been a horrible ordeal. Very sorry to hear you went through such a thing.

But sounds as if everything has turned out positive for you and the family. There are some respectable attorneys out there, my father and AZ amoung them, and yours too it sounds.
