View Full Version : Did Shanahan do the right thing keeping Griese in the game last night?

Stevie rays post on the star bb got me thinking...
I realize Denver really needed this game, but Griese has had problems with his shoulder since the first Raider game and it was apparent he was hurting last night..... Was it really a good idea to put him out there on a frozen turf instead of using Ferotte?
I'm wondering how he will feel when the pain shots wear off.... Was the win worth a possible career threatening injury?.... In a similar situation would KC fans want to see Gonzo with say a bad knee, or Elvis with a bad wing in?
I'm not judging Shanahan, but I know that as much as I wanted to see Wheatly play last night... I realize his being healthy over the stretch run was more important to the team.

Long term, no one knows yet how long, or even if, Griese will miss games because of his decision to play Monday night.
If Griese is missing for a few games and donx lose because Frerotte can't get the job done, then it was a bad decision to play Griese.

Then again, if they don't win on Monday night, it doesn't put them in a very good position. Gotta take it one game at a time...

I think that Shanahan should have pulled Griese when it was obvious he was hurt and he couldn't throw more than 10-15 yards. The way Denver's D was playing, Frerotte could have won the game for them.

Tough decisions are made every week in the NFL. Was it a smart move? Who knows? I believe that if Griese had said "No, I can't play", then I doubt Shanahan would have said "do it regardless".
It was a "must win" game for Denver, if they wanted to strive for the playoffs. I'm not sure which Denver defense you're talking about when you say they were playing well... is this the same Denver defense that gave up 14 points late in the second half to tie things up?
Griese was playing with pain and it showed, but in crunch time he made the plays to win the game. Simply put.
I don't know that I would label the injury as "career threatening" just yet. Now, had this been a "must win" game for Oakland, I'll bet that Wheatley would have been in there.

Brad,
I went to sleep after the Raiders failed to score on 4th & goal in the 4th quarter w/about 11 minutes left so I didn't see the Denver D that allowed 14 pts after that.

Just talked to a few of my Donx friends who called me to rub it in..... Seems Griese is doubtful for next weeks game with a seperated shoulder and Shanahan is being questioned for using him in the second half...
Gotta give credit where credit is due.... Griese is a tough s.o.b.!

Things like this will happen in the NFL.
It's a tough call... hopefully, he can sit out for a week and Gus can fill the void for a game or possibly two.
Griese has earned a lot of respect this year, mostly from Bronco fans and hopefully from others as well.
