View Full Version : Royals Bullpen Is The Difference So Far

In the past few years, the topic heading would be correct, for all the wrong reasons... Royals fans had many names to describe the Bottalico led or Hernandez led bullpens (it wasn't called the "Poison Pen" for nothing).

Now, in 2003, it need not take a rocket scientist to figure out why the Royals are winning.

Sure, one of them is we're feasting on the AL Central, which will never be confused with the toughest divisions of modern times.

But the on-field difference is very simple. The Royals bullpen, long a glaring weakness has abruptly become a shining strength.

Here are the ERA's and other stats of the Royals bullpen (granted, it will go up by 1.5 to 2 runs by season's end at least, but even with that increase, it still makes for a very talented pen.

We're playing with fire. If our starters don't begin to stretch their outings, the entire bullpen will have dead-arm by mid-June. Particularly disturbing to me is the number of walks the starters have surrendered of late. We've been very fortunate to limit the number of runs allowed due largely to timely double plays. That won't last. Asencio is particularly disturbing to me. We must start having stronger outtings, because we can't count on the upcoming opponents to fold late like the Tigers did this weekend. It's only a matter of time before the scoreless innings streaks, now at 17 IIRC, by the bullpen ends, and it's only a matter of time before MacDougal blows one, which will probably turn into two, and then three, before he gets himself back in check.

Hopefully Runelvys Hernandez can return to form against the Twins on Tuesday. Nothing would make me feel better than seeing a Royals starter pitch into the eighth.

I don't think the bullpen is the difference.

I think the situational hitting worked on in the off-season, and the d-fense has been the difference, imo.

Our young pitchers have a lot of W's so far this year, but we have let a lot of people get on base and our defense has saved us.

We really struggled to win these last 2 games at home, against the worst team in baseball. I am not trying to imply that the team is imploding, but I think Glass is correct at setting our sights at being a .500 team and locking Sweeney in.

The pitchers are only going to get better as time goes on, except for Affeldt, so we will be sitting pretty down the road. We get our first real test tonight, and I would love to sweep the Twins. Coming off the ass-waxing the recieved from the Yankee's if we win tonight we have a good chance destroying thier confidence.

Realisticly, I would be very happy with 2 out of 3.
