I lost count at 10 dropped balls. Gonzo dropped 2 or 3, DA dropped 2 (1 TD), and there were several others.

How about that GREAT defensive secondary?! NOT!

We were destined to give up plays in the secondary - you just have to control it. I think we did an acceptable job of that.

I totally agree, people are going to criticize Grbac for the INT which was returned for a TD but he had sooo many passes dropped. Special Teams really hurt us agian. I'm kinda bummed but I thought we hung in there...

I came to the realization a while ago this is a rebuilding year.

On a positive tip, Morris looked really good. That kid is going to be a player...

But we gave up WAY TOO MUCH yardage on missed coverages in the defensive secondary.

And where was the pass rush? We will not be able to beat the contenders as long as we have no pass rush.

In fairness, Manning was hurried often. We didn't get to him as often as you'd like to be we did pressure him some. He gets rid of the ball REALLY quick.

Overall, (dropped balls aside) I'm really pleased with our performance.

If getting burned in the secondary is "acceptable", we're gonna get burned all year!

Kilgore what game did you watch? It may have been hard to see the pass rush listening to it on the radio! http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/smile.gif In reality, Manning was hurried most of the afternoon.

I wasn't listening to it on the radio..but you must have been if you think what we had today was a pass rush.

I disagree that Manning was hurried in his passes all day long. He had time to look off his primary receivers MANY times. Fact is that if the Colts receivers hadn't been borrowing the vaseline from the KC receivers the score would have been worse.

Does anyone else agree that our lack of preparation in the preseason kind of hurt us today? I feel like that is why Grbac looked rusty at times and the receivers dropped the ball so much. Too bad it will take a few games for this offense to get in sync. What makes it tougher is the opposition we have to play in those games. I was hoping that we would exploit their small db's more with our big receivers. They started to towards the end of the game. I saw some postives though. I feel we could have a nice passing attack with those big receivers if the coaches choose to open that up. The defense tackled better too for most of the game while we were still in it. It may be a rough start but the offense could gel after a few games.

Kilgore, nice. Still no original material. Do you pay royalties for all the other people's lines you use?

Since you intend on acting like an a$$hole, I guess i can pretty much ignore you.

Not sure what caused you to decide to act like you are the all-knowing, omnipotent one on the board here, but feel free to set high on that throne.

I am not here to entertain you, nor ask for your approval of my opinions.

BTW, I only use "original lines" on people who deserve it. You, don't come close to qualifying. But, you do come close to qualifying for the "Ken Dienberg Clone" award.

Illusion,
You nailed it! The LACK of preparation in the preseason did HURT today. I expected exactly what I saw on offense. RUSTY Now, like last year the Chiefs will have to use the first couple of REAL games to get the rust out. This is a BAD trend with this coaching staff.

Phill,
I lost count after 10 also. I think EG was 18 for 37 or something OUTRAGEOUS there abouts. Now, I wonder if Gun FINALLY realizes that the time to get the rust of is PRESEASON. IMHO, our lack luster approach to preseason HURT!

I agree on this one. Our offense just seems out of synch. They need to get in rythm quick, because the season's already started.

What really surprised me was WHO was dropping the passes. Alexander was expected, but Gonzalez, Kimble, and Drayton dropped passes too (as well as a few others).

I agree that the preseason was wasted for the offense. Gonzo said in his post-game comments on kcchiefs.com

"But remember, it is our first game and once we start getting it going......."

They should have already had it going! It's like last season's opener @ Chicago (although more encouraging). They were not as prepared as they could have been.

Morris was the only one who DIDN`T drop one.

He even caught the one ruled incomplete.
maybe lockett too

Actually, Morris might have had one drop. I know one was inhis range that wasn't caught, but, although I can't remember the circumstances (knocked away by defender, PI IMO, something like that), I didn't think it was his fault. Overall, he showed great hands, and spectacular leaping ability.

Oh yeah, I'm remembering another instance. Grbac threw a long pass down the sidelines when Morris was dead even with the CB, then Morris sped past him and almost caught it. I think it went off his hands, but I thought it was uncatchable when it left Grbacs hand.

I counted about 8 or 9 drops, 2 by Alexander, 1 by Cat, 2 by Gonzo, 1 by Drayton, 1 by Lockett, 1 by Anders, and maybe someone else had one there.

The worst part was before we made the punt that Indy got the long return back into our own territory and scored the go ahead FG. Anders dropped a sure conversion on 2nd down, and I believe it was Alexander dropping a sure conversion on 3rd down.

The offense was out of synch, the defense played bend but try to create turnovers again, we still have no clue how to cover the screen to the RB, I was disgusted watching James sprint to the endzone and his lone blocker not having to block anyone. Elvis made that one bad decision, everyone dropped balls, bad call by the official on that one catch Cat made IMO, the offensive coordinator still sucks, we still start out the game way too conservatively, we still run no creative pass patterns, it's just the same story as the end of last year. At least we didn't kick it out of bounds.

And to top that off, Brock Middlebrook catches 5 passes and the game winning TD for Oakland today against pathetic San Diego. Alas...

I didn't mind KC trying to establish the run, after all we needed to control the clock and keep the Colts off the field. Granted, the first six runs were pretty lackluster but the run works better as the day goes on and the Defense wears down.

What I thought was inexcusable was the home crowd booing after 3 plays. Pitiful.

Kilgore, clearly guilty of PWI.

AZChief - I agree, but 3rd & 6 on the first series should have been a pass.
DaKCMan AP
09-03-2000, 05:59 PM
AZChief - In that situation I think booing was well warranted. Raye, Gun, whoever's to blame (both), don't know how to run an offense. I'm not just talking about our 5-6 straight runs and how predictable we are inside our own 30, but our mismanagement of personnel. Why is Bennett still getting carries? And on 3rd and 6!?!?

Yosef_Malkovitch
09-03-2000, 06:01 PM
What is sad (almost inexcusable) is that we can't/didn't run outside.

I haven't looked at the stats, but I know Moreau broke a 12 yarder and had a 4 yarder. Did he have any other carries?

Moreau is the guy to go wide. He has the speed and the instinct to turn the corner (Cloud and TRich just can't do this).

Ho is KCs first legitimate inside/outside threat in years.

I think this has been mentioned already somewhere, but I just saw the highlights on primetime and I saw something that makes me sick. Why must Chief tacklers always go for the strip?! For Pete's sake I was yelling at the TV during highlights. I thought Gunther was supposed to be the definsive "quality control/fundamentals" coach. He's not doing a very good job.

Joe Seahawk
09-03-2000, 06:07 PM
kc30, yeah I wanted a pass there too. Honestly, I don't think Gun/Raye know what they're doing early on but the booing bummed me out...

Moreau did look good but of course he wasn't given any oppportunity to get into a groove. It seems like our backs are throwing out there at different times for no rhyme of reason and then just changed. What kills me is the bass to Bennett in the flat. He made a nice little gain today but it still seems like that's a play that should go to Cloud.

AZChief - Yeah, surprisingly that screen to Bennett worked. But his being caught from behind by a DLman shows that that kind of play needs to go to someone else. http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/smile.gif

I wonder how many of those dropped passes might have been avoided, by playing the first team together all of preseason, instead of waiting til Tuesday, to establish your lineup. Our coaching staff still leaves a lot to be desired. I hope our youth movement wasn't established to hide the fact, our management has no confidence in this team.

Sackman
09-03-2000, 06:29 PM
Gman is absolutely correct. With Grbac, the chiefs MUST establish the run. Only one problem... BENNETT CAN'T RUN. 3rd and 6 run is all right, I have no problem with that. But they gave it to the WORST runner on the team WAY to much. If they want to feature the Fullback so much, put TRich back there and start the rookie Moreau.
