View Full Version : Pack Up The Season...

We are finally seeing the result of sticking with Elvis as our starting QB...We can't even come close to competing with the real teams in the NFL as long as we have this dufus as our QB...I can't wait to hear all you Grbackers spring to his defense, even after this exhibition today...Talk to me, Russ....
09-03-2000, 03:23 PM
I'm not a Grbacker by any means, but you can't lay this one on Elvis... You gotta lay this EGG on the coaches and the dropped passes...
09-03-2000, 03:24 PM
mikey, didn't get to see the game, huh? That's the only way I can rationalize you pinning this loss on Elvis...
09-03-2000, 03:27 PM
One thing that stuck out to me in the box score was that Indy rushed more often and for more yards. Obviously we had to go to the passing game late while Indy ran the ball with their lead. Someone help me out, I was at work the whole time. Did we run the ball early? Was Indy's defense tougher than we thought? Is our running game worse than we thought? And why the hell does Bennett have more rushing attempts than everyone but Richardson for -4 yards?!
Oh, and what was this big super secret uniform change about?
I don't pin the loss on Elvis, but mikey isn't too far off. Elvis made more bad passes as there were dropped passes. Granted, the dropped passes where right on the money, for the most part. Elvis is not the man to lead the Chiefs to the promise land.

Agreed Fly. He is really inconsistent, but I think that today was one of his worse games. Remember last year at San Diego for instance, or against TB's pass rush. He was terrible those days, but had several good days. Those throws he made to Lockett in the 4th quarter were brutal.....but several passes were dropped too. Overall he did OK. He threw some great passes, and deserves credit for hooking up with SlyMo with so little practice. That INT he threw was devastating, but the ball clearly slipped out of his hands. That could happen to anybody. It had no rotation and came out sideways, miles behind DA. He shouldn't have attempted to throw that pass, but it's easy to criticise from here.

Obviously, someone watched a different game than me. I know the Int return hurt, but all in all, I can't count how many first down passes were dropped. Even the Colt fans I was sharing the bar with admitted that if we'd have hung on to half of the drops, they'd have been playing catch-up.
There's no question that Elvis should have tossed that one out of bounds, but we had enough chances...DA's drop in the Endzone could have put us at 27-21 with four minutes to go. You've GOT to catch balls like that.

You don't know squat. I am even more pumped about the season then ever. GB did not lose this game.
The D and the recivers will correct the mistakes they made today. The Chiefs will go 11-5 this year.

Indy's running game came on in the 4th quarter. Both teams had 43 yds on the ground at half time. Like last year, the run defense really began to stink late in the game...........very worrying to me. Bennett should be last in the rushing depth chart. This goes against what I have been saying in preseason, but this is the first action I have seen this year, and he is slow and one-dimensional to say the least. It was frustrating every time he got the ball.
I thought our running game would be much better in this game than it was. We only had 74 yards which is terrible, I didn't think that Indy's run defense was that good. IMO Cloud deserved a few more carries (the ones given to Bennett). Even Moreau showed something on that 12 yard run up the middle. He can accelerate through traffic.

It was obvious from the beginning that the game plan today was once again, protect Elvis...He only threw when it was unavoidable....We fell behind early because we were trying to run not throw, even though the Colts were stacking the line....Even with 8 men on the line, we were trying to run up the gut...
I belive that Cunningham should change his way and stick with the throwing offense. He wants to run the ball too much. The Chiefs a dangerous in the air (bad passes and dropped balls can be corrected).

you make me sick......please do us all a favor and put yourself out of your misery now so we dont have to hear this again

Did anyone notice that Elvis was trying to go through his progressions and not locking on his receivers? You could tell he was trying. At least that's a start.
09-03-2000, 03:43 PM
Mikey, you either didn't see the game, are a dyed in the wool, Grbasher, or just plain have your head up your a$$. As the announcers said, if Alexander doesn't drop the TD pass, we don't even see the overthrows to Lockett. He made a few bad passes, but we also had a few drops. I love the way Guns keep things so secret, except to say we will not take any chances inside our 20. Indy must have read that quote for sure. Bennett is a mystery to me too, but he didn't play the second half.
09-03-2000, 03:46 PM
Grand - Not only did he not lock on one, look at the distribution of receptions, TG probably had the least. Yes he is trying and overall the team played better than I expected. Remember, this is a team everyone expects to be in the title game anyway.
09-03-2000, 03:53 PM
When the Defense had the 2 turnovers the Offense didn't turn it into TD's that was the difference in the game.

Good point Grand and kcred.
Grbac did distribute the ball well, and was able to find SlyMo a few times with very limited practice time. The INT was just one of those things (slipped out of his hand), and the 2 passes to Lockett were woeful, but he made few mistakes all in all.
But he did drop the ball and we did see the bad passes. That is a bad arguement. Yes Alexander should have made the catch, but that does not justify the following passes.
Grbac did well. He wasn't great, but he wasn't horrible. Still, the int was the nail in the coffin pretty much. Kind of like Parker's fumble last year, it sealed the game.
I did notice him going through his reads more and he scanned the field well. He even pump faked! But he was off target quite a bit, most glaringly at the goal line when he overthrew Lockett. DA's touchdown was behind him, and DA ripped the ball out of the DBs hands.
Gonzalez was nowhere to be seen. Indy's DBs were getting a way with a lot of contact, though, IMO. Dierdorf's blind. He said the ref made a bad call when hollier was holding TG's arm. But we still can't drop all these passes. Not only Alexander, but Gonzalez, Kimble, and Drayton.

EG looked through his reads very well today, and spread the ball around.
All of the wrongs commited today are easily corrected.
I see great things for the team this year.
09-03-2000, 04:10 PM
Yeah the distribution was very good. IMO I feel that the dropped balls and some of Elvis's missed throws were a result of the Chiefs starters not working much on their passing game in the preseason games. It will come around though. It looks very encouraging.

Nice post redbrian! I too think that Grbac showed improvements. Everything but the 2 passes to Lockett was excusable IMO.
G-Man, I noticed the pump-fake too...couldn't believe it http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/eek.gif

Grbac is NOT a great QB but I've maintained all along that it is Raye's system more than Grbac that is hurting the Chiefs. Once the Chiefs get behind, Grbac is asked to do things that are against the basic philosophy of Raye's system. Once we're behinf late - its OVER! The rebuilding can't really begin until Raye gets the boot IMHO.
