As a note, bad weather tends to make things more quiet. You're less likely to encounter fighters, and the flak guns are less likely to see you. On the other hand, it's hard to place your bombs, and if you do run into trouble you're less likely to have fighter support.

Then I'll say, hey, we should count all those gauges again to see if any are missing. While she is counting them again, I'll land the plane.

I think I see your problem. You need to do what you feel is best, then convice your client that what you did is what she really wants. It's always easier to convice a client that you know best than it is to elicit enough information to determine what they are really wanting. Besides, if you aren't the professional and know what is best for your client, how can you justify the exorbitant bill you are going to send?

We should be bombing the crap outa France, err...I mean German targets. Instead, we're sitting on our thumbs while the Abbeville Boys get a good nights' rest, and Rommel adds of few more mines to the beach at Normandy.

Keep it up, and pretty soon we'll be facing jet fighters.

Sure. Believe me, it really is best for you if I take over as your agent.

When I was a kid, my Dad had a painting company. There was one lady that had a paint chip she wanted my Dad to match for her living room. Every time my Dad would paint a spot, she would swear that it didn't match. After the 4th trip to the paint store, my Dad painted a sample spot on the wall, then painted the paint chip. Lo and behold, a perfect match!

I am still surprised that after 28 individual missions that not a single bomber has been lost.

I've read somewhere that about 30,000 airmen were killed with the same amount being downed and put into POW camps during the war.
The numbers may be a bit off...but,not by much.

This being 1943...with the Luftwaffe at prime strength..i would think this luck won't hold out much longer.Once missions start getting close to Germany,IE:out of fighter support range,we may see entire planes and crews go down.

BTW,Kevin...is there a consideration of being a POW in this simulation? And,will the lack of the P-51 as a support fighter play a factor?

Good points all. With regard to the plane losses, keep in mind that the first five missions are intentionally shorter missions where you're guaranteed fighter cover. If you want a glimpse of the future, go back and look at how many enemy planes are being driven off by fighter cover. (Gulp.)

And yep, if you bail out over Germany and survive, you're going to be spending your evenings for the next two years under the ironfisted rule of Colonel Wilhelm Klink. If you bail out over France, your fate will depend on whether the French Underground or the Germans find you first. If you bail out over water, you'd better hope that you get your life raft inflated.

And yes, there are no P-51s. Your range with fighter cover isn't very large.

Missions 6-10 will expand to some areas that are beyond fighter range, though about half will still afford good fighter cover. About 75 percent of Missions 11-25 force you to go outside of fighter cover for at least a portion of your missions.

I don't know every detail, but it's a paper and pencil game I guess. There's several threads around here about what's going on...

After re-reading your post maybe you're just asking about the game in more detail, in which case disregard the above where I appear to have a box of crawdads shoved up my colon.

Thank goodness that Kevin got all that out of his system before the Fooo Fighters took to the air. Oh, BTW, condolences the the loved ones and friends of the airpeople on the Deep Red. Now I bet there's half a dozen planes though trying to off one of thier crew to make a place for RednFiesty when she's reincarnated.:)

Oh, and Kevin, could you have someone from the ground crew take a look at the machineguns I've been firing. I am sure those sights are out of adjustment.

Rain Man

Hey Rain Man, is there a link online that explains how you're determining the outcome of these? Just curious how it works.

Y'know, there's not, or at least not that I can find. I posted some general information about it in four threads: "A major statistical timekiller..." and four threads that start with "Some rules and background..." Those actually give a pretty good description of particular elements.

tk13 is correct in that it's a pencil and paper game, so that's why it's taken me a long time to build up these missions (several years). The game is called "B-17 - Queen of the Skies" and it's by Avalon Hill. You can find some references to it online and I even saw one web site where game players can play together in a wave of B-17s, but I haven't really seen anything that describes the game.

It's pretty cool, actually. It's simple to play, and it's just a basic simulation but it gives you a ton of potential outcome branches that makes most missions unique. Essentially, you just do this:

1. Determine target, weather and formation.
2. For each zone the plane crosses, roll dice to determine if they encounter enemy fighters. The likelihood depends on where they're flying, and is always higher in the target zone.
3. If they encounter enemy fighters, you roll dice to see how many there are, and each fighter randomly comes in from a particular direction.
4. You figure out which guns can fire back and roll dice to see if they hit.
5. If the fighters survive, they roll dice to see if they hit, and if so, roll more dice to see what exactly got hit. What gets hit depends on where the bullets are coming from. If the fighter gets a hit, it'll circle and try again.
6. You then figure out what happens to the B-17 if it gets hit, which involves looking up the damage in some tables.
7. Repeat steps 2-6 for each zone.
8. Do all the target zone stuff like flak and the bombing run.
9. Repeat steps 2-6 for each zone coming home.

Do you have a bunch of weird dice (20-sided, etc) like for D&D?

I do, but I don't use them for this game. (grin)

Cruiseville, other than a few bumps. Maybe the French are now defending France.

Wow we are doing pretty good. And this mission was easier than the first. But damnit I know I am the navigator and do a good job getting us on target but I want to kill some enemy aircraft. I am a better shot than this game is portraying.
