View Full Version : How often do you wash your hats?

How often do you wash your hats? For example, if you wear a hat while mowing the lawn on a hot and sunny day, do you throw the hat in the washer or just let the sweat dry out eventually? Just curious.

I wash 'em about as often as Donger washes his legs.

Let the sweat dry out. Man, the older and nastier a hat looks, the better. It's a rule, no need to doubt it.

That's a good thought. Tradition.

"I worked for eight hours in an alfalfa field in 110 degree heat in that hat twenty years ago... you can see the bloodstain I sustained from a hoe mishap right above the bill..."

I don't wear hats very often any more but have never understood why anyone would bother with washing one anyway. Unless you have one of those holders you put it in to maintain some shape, it ruins the hat!

Very true. You would not want to ruin a hat just because it is a bit sweaty.

Exactly! It still keeps the sun out of your eyes and the rain off your head. What more do you want?

I just rotate them. The newer ones i wear when i wont sweat and the older ones to play golf in. When the older/dirtier one gets nasty i toss it start using one of he others to play golf in.

Rotation system... not a bad idea!

But what about somebody's favorite and/or lucky hat? Would they want to keep it as clean as possible, or would a dirty hat add more prestige?

Seriously, do you even have to ask that? EVERYBODY knows you NEVER EVER wash your lucky whatever it is. Except for maybe underwear, but that's also not a given.

Well, lucky anything, duh you are right. But favorite something is different, and some people may want their favorite hat to remain clean.

I think a better option would have been "when the hat is beginning to deteriorate into nothingness from mildew and whatnot".

Too bad I don't have a digital camera. I'd post a pic of my old fraternity hat. It was white when I bought it. There are now parts that have shot right past yellow and gone into brown territory.

AND, I used to wash it occassionally.

My fraturnity hat got so nasty i had to retire it by Junior year. Same thing...it was white and turned into some funky dirt color. I still have it around somewhere.

Yeah Tan/khaki is the best for hiding dirt. Dark ones can also get really bad if you wear it in the sun.

I bought a white hat for that reason.

Something about having a scummy "white" hat just seemed appealing.

I was doing a lot of drugs back then.

Four words

"Gentle cycle"
and
"Line Dry"

Seems like I always get a grease smudge or grass stain on my favorite hats, so I just throw them in with the gentle cycle stuff when I eventually get enough of that delicate sh!t to consistute a load [no silk panties here, usually some of my more expensive golf wear, or a few pairs of washable dress slacks*]. Hang 'em from the basement rafters afterwards. Never had a problem. Have some hats I've washed 20-30 times.

* - Brooks Brothers carries some gentle cycle washable slacks that are the absolute shiznit.

It's more a matter of having a large capacity washer and very few things to wash on delicate. So I see that wimpy pile and say "well, there's some schmutz on this hat here, so toss it in too."

Just throw them into the dishwasher and turn it on. If you have trouble turning the dishwasher on, just have the wife do it. As previously stated, this won't screw up the bills, yet it will get the hats clean.
