Moulton woman says she lost job for sporting Kerry sticker on car

MOULTON Lynne Gobbell never imagined the cost of a John Kerry-John Edwards bumper sticker could run so high.

DAILY Photo by Clyde Stancil
Lynne Gobbell said her boss fired her last week because of the Kerry-Edwards campaign sticker on the back of her car.
Gobbell of Moulton didn't pay a cent for the sticker that she proudly displays on the rear windshield of her Chevrolet Lumina, but said it cost her job at a local factory after it angered her boss, Phil Gaddis.

Gaddis, a Decatur bankruptcy attorney, owns Enviromate, a cellulose insulation company in Moulton.

Gaddis did not return phone calls from THE DAILY about the alleged Thursday firing.

Gobbell said she consulted a lawyer, but then changed her mind about going to see him. She said she has cried about the incident and must do without income for three weeks while the state unemployment commission decides if she is eligible for compensation.

Gobbell said she was averaging 50 to 60 hours a week on the plant's bagging machine.

"The lady there (at the unemployment commission) said that she has never heard of a firing like this before," Gobbell said.

Gobbell gave this account:

"We were going back to work from break, and my manager told me that Phil said to remove the sticker off my car or I was fired," she said. "I told him that Phil couldn't tell me who to vote for. He said, 'Go tell him.' "

She went to Gaddis' office, knocked on the door and entered on his orders.

"Phil and another man who works there were there," she said. "I asked him if he said to remove the sticker and he said, 'Yes, I did.' I told him he couldn't tell me who to vote for. When I told him that, he told me, 'I own this place.' I told him he still couldn't tell me who to vote for."

Gobbell said Gaddis told her to "get out of here."

"I asked him if I was fired and he told me he was thinking about it," she said. "I said, 'Well, am I fired?' He hollered and said, 'Get out of here and shut the door.' "

She said her manager was standing in another room and she asked him if that meant for her to go back to work or go home. The manager told her to go back to work, but he came back a few minutes later and said, " 'I reckon you're fired. You could either work for him or John Kerry,' " Gobbell said.

"I took off my gloves and threw them in the garbage and left," Gobbell said.

Though she is unemployed and uncertain if she will get her job back, Gobbell said, she doesn't regret her decision to keep the sticker on her windshield.

"I would like to find another job, but I would take that job back because I need to work," she said. "It upset me and made me mad that he could put a letter in my check expressing his (political) opinion, but I can't put something on my car expressing mine."

She was referring to a flier that she said Gaddis placed in employee envelopes to remind them of the positive impact that President Bush's policies have had on them. An employee at the plant who would not identify himself confirmed the contents of the letter.

Gobbell provided a copy of the flier. It says:

"Just so you will know, because of the Bush tax (cut):

I was able to buy the new Hammer Mill
I was able to finance our receivables
I was able to get the new CAT skid steer
I was able to get the wire cutter
I was able to give you a job"
It further says:

"You got the benefit of the Bush tax cut. Everyone did."

This ass-clown could have borrowed to buy this equipment and provide these jobs. Kinda like W and the Republicans. Phil Gaddis reminds me of a macho Jesus Christ. Tough, but charitable.

I'd recommend you refrain from further clown punching with Ben Gay to John Kerry ads and moveondotorg.

I think a business owner should be able to pretty much hire and fire whomever they want.........maybe she was a crappy worker, causing political discontent at the workplace, and that was just an excuse.....

Based on work performance, yes. Being the cause of office strife, yes. But the article does not suggest these things. Purely speculation on your part.

But firing someone for their political leanings is just plain stupid. He might as well held up a sign "Free Money". Instead he will have his and her legal fees and a settlement for wrongful termination. Guess him not seeing the sticker was, worth it, I guess. Only in Alabama. :shake:

Nope, "at will" states can fire you for any reason they like, excluding discrimination based upon those already set standards by the SC. Political leanings is not one of the discriminatory legs.

Her iron clad story also makes me wonder why she saw a lawyer and then decided against action? However, I am sure she is being 100% honest, aren't you?

So you get to say what people can put on their own personal property? This guy is just wrong and if it were turned the other way you know that you would be up in arms. If I were that person I would not only file a wrongful termination suit, but also a suppression of civil rights suit. And I hate lawyers.

Yeah. Just like the "Reagan deficit" did.
Why do you think George Sr lost his job. The economic pluses of deficit spending was outmatched by the need to pay the interest on that debt.

No doubt. The board would also be filled with, "See how these liberals hate free speech!?!?!"

At least I haven't seen any libs trying to make sweeping generalizations about conservatives from the actions of this single moron. Though, if I continue to see the conservatives on this board defend this moron's actions (assuming the story is accurate), I'll begin to make some similar conclusions based on a larger sampling.

Really? I guess the comments must be solely isolated to this single "moron"?

Everybody knows that Bush's followers are stupid, but c'mon. Damn.

And Anybody that gives a sh*t about our troops wants the incompetents ousted yesterday.

You have your own share of "morons" to worry about before you start castigating an entire group here for the same reason.

Feel free to denounce the guy, heck I don't care one way or another. Never met either of these people. But denouncing him is different from holding him to account [or uselessly trying to] in the court of law.

While this story is great "anti-Conservative" rhetoric.......Has a single Person, besides that woman verified her story?

Right now, to me....it reads like that 3 toothed Bronco fan, outside the Trailer park after the Tornado talking on TV
"it was paaaandalerium!"

I was fired in HS from a job, as was a friend, for carving a jackolantern into a $.13 potato, taken from the garbage bin on a sunday night, while board and told "go to the back and goof off until close"................I'm not feelin for this broad. I was fired from a escavating job in college for telling the boss not to call me a "c@ck sucker" again.........a boss can pretty much do what they want in alot of places....except eat solid food for a couple days after calling Iowanian a c@cksucker.

maybe after the Kerry Campaign loses, and she's let go Nov 3, he'll move her to China to work in his Ketsup factory?

Scratch the "possible." Alabama recognizes the good faith requirement in employment-at-will contracts, and this case sure sounds like "caprice, vindictiveness, or malice."
