Great. We left for Biloxi MS last Friday, expecting a week of fun on the beach. And then, Ivan decided to head for the Gulf Coast.

We had to evacuate by order of the National Guard yesterday morning, so we and about 2 million other gulfers hit the major highways north. I10, 49N, and 59N were virtual parking lots. We took a last stab at a hotel room by heading to MaComb MS(about 100 mi. north of landfall), and fortunately got one. Now it's 2 days total here, then deal with the drive(which will probably include much rain and wind) back to Memphis, then finally home to KC.

Yay. Thanks Ivan.

Seriously, we're just thankful we're OK and had a place to stay in the storm.. many folks didn't.

That sucks, but becareful, even 100 miles north is going to be dangerous. They expect it to break up fast, but it will spawn off tornadoes along with some pretty good winds, 40 - 50 mph.

Good luck, post us an update soon !

ZEP,
Sorry the storm ruined your vacation. Yesterday some friends and I actually took advanatge of the storm surf and went surfing off Galveston. Sunny skies, perfect lines, and 1 foot over -head waves :thumb: as the storm was still far enough out not to chop out the surf. A perfect example of how one man's pleasure is another man's pain. Hurricanes do $UCK, but sometimes there are benefits when the storm isn't coming your way. Again, sorry it ruined your vacation and stay SAFE!

Last year Isabel altered my vacation but didn't ruin it. I just had to stay inland a little more than I wanted to.

That stinks. Too bad, Zep.

I'm going to Atlanta soon on business. I'm sure hoping I can get there.

My Bro. in law rode the storm out in Bay St. Louis. McComb and Memphis are not in the path of the storm. It is further East.

Delighted you got a room and out of there. My Mother in Law said all hotel rooms are full.

I'm just curious. When a hurricane is out in the middle of the ocean and isn't near land or anything, what do the fish think about it? Is it deadly to them by sucking them out of the water, or is it like some big carnival ride to them?

Supposedly, the Samford Stadium (Georgia's football stadium) scoreboard was ripped away by a tornado.

VACATION UPDATE

OK, spent the last 2 nights in MacComb.. great spot to avoid Ivan. The town was safely to North and West. Didn't even rain. Just some gusty winds.

Drove to Memphis today, went thru some rain and pretty gusty winds. Smooth sailing from here back to KC Sat. morning.

Watched some of the Ivan footage on the Weather Channel. Wow, shuddered at some of it. We were staying not 200 ft. from the beach in Biloxi.

Scary stuff, but thanking the good Lord for the good fortune.

We got hammered pretty good today in Atlanta. Lots of wind, rain, torndados, and flooding. Finally got to try out the generator at my office, it ran flawlessly for 3 hours this evening while power was out, just got back from checking everything out, and all systems are go :)

Bad thing was that after 2 hours the phone company's SLIC ran out of battery, so our DSL went down.... always a weak link somewhere. Gonna buy an external modem tomorrow for dial-up backup for our router. Never lost phone service, just the DSL went down.
