Sep 15, 2004, 4:40:13 PM

Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Wednesday that the club had signed TE Casey Poppinga to the practice and released WR John Booth from the practice squad.

Poppinga (6-5, 256) went to training camp with Seattle in 2004 after spending the final four weeks of the 2003 season the Seahawks practice squad. He originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with Pittsburgh last season and was released during training camp. The Utah State product caught 36 passes for 363 yards with one touchdown in college. He started his collegiate career at Wyoming before transferring to Utah State as a sophomore. Poppinga was an USA Today honorable mention All-America as a senior at Evanston High School in Evanston, Wyoming.

To make room for Poppinga on the eight-man practice squad, the team released Booth (6-0, 199). The Mid-America Nazarene graduate was a local college quarterback making the switch to wide receiver in the NFL. He completed 284 of 534 yards for 4,250 yards with 42 TDs and 16 INTs, good for a 140.0 rating with 465 carries for 3,037 with 35 TDs during his collegiate career.

If Casey married Deron Cherry, he'd be Casey Poppinga-Cherry.
