frazod brought out an awesome issue, I'll expand on it. This will probably be boring to all the old farts here, but oh well.

Anyway, here are my top 5:

1. Half-Life Counter Strike
2. Halo
3. Sega ESPN NFL Series.
4. Knights of the Old Republic
5. Age of Empires II: Age of Kings

1. Madden 1999-2005
2. Knights of the Old Republic
3. The Secret of Monkey Island
4. Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II
5. TIE Fighter
6. Clive Barker's Undying
7. Half-Life

Currently, Knights of the Old Republic and Freelancer, which are my absolute favorites. I will occasionally fart around with Medal of Honor, Unreal Tournament, and Postal 2 (very therapeutic after a bad day at the office  ).

Some old games that I've enjoyed in the past would include Conquest of the New World and going WAY BACK to pre-Windows operating systems, Master of Magic. I still have these games, but neither will play on Windows XP. :sulk:

Yeah, I don't think it was meant as a single player game. The maps are way too long and repetetive. The only reason it's #2 on my list is because of it's awesome multiplayer. That is also why CS gets #1.

I haven't owned a console since the Intellivision, so I'm strictly speaking of PC games. In no particular order my favorites are/were:

Tribes I
Counter-Strike
Savage: Battle for Newerth
Neverwinter Nights (not so much the official campaigns - the best ones were community made)
Baldurs Gate II (THE STANDARD for story telling RPGs IMO)
Tetris (circa 1990 there was nothing like it)
Sid Meier's Pirates (remake in order - woo hoo, and yes this is another game from the late 80's)
Pool of Radiance and other D&D titles on C64
H.E.R.O on C64
The Warlords series (older ones, frankly if you want to see hero/rpg mixed with RTS Warlords Battlecry was much better than Warcraft III)
Total War series (Shogun, Medieval, Vikings, and Rome)

I'm a picky gamer with somewhat unique tastes. There are plenty of mainstream games that pass me by or I don't care for. For months or years at a time I'll get out of gaming and not really notice what's out there, then something comes along and I'm hooked for a while.

I only have a PS2, so here would be mine (in no real order):

Grand Theft Auto series -- this game is wrong on so many levels, but has forever changed the way games will be played.

SSX 3 -- This is one of the most enjoyable and graphically gorgeous games for any console. Absolutely amazing.

NCAA series -- I can think of few things better than running the option.

Gran Turismo -- the fourth one will be out soon, and should be stunning. I've spent countless hours playing the first three.

Risk (for the old PSX) -- By far the most gameplay I've ever had out of a game. Too bad they haven't improved the "Ultimate Risk" idea on the PS2 ... you get generals, forts, capitals, and outstanding maps. They could've made this into a tru classic, but didn't.

Tomb Raider -- Have finished all but the first two, and can't wait for the next one.

I've always prefered FPS in single play.

Usually with the AI for single player FPS being fairly regimented you just have to find the patterns to beat opponents. Far Cry did a good job of providing some intelligence to NPCs with their ability to flank and become alerted. Still, nothing is as challenging as a human opponent who might try something totally unorthodox and who is reacting as quickly as you do to changing curcumstances.

However, you have to deal with cheating and sometimes insane skill differences when going PvP. A buddy of mine is a hardcore gamer and would routinely get kicked for cheating at counter-strike. Nobody was as anti-cheating as this guy, but his skills were unbelievable. I'd sit behind him and watch him sometimes at LAN parties. He'd just draw a bead on people and fire or switch weapons and an incredibly fast pace. In counter-strike he'd often get 33-1 K/D ratios before getting kicked by people accusing him of cheating. It's no fun to play against someone that good.

It's just a diversionary form of entertainment like watching a movie, reading a book, or watching football. In video games it's interactive and believe it or not there's a brain chemistry payoff not unlike jogger's high. In moderation there's nothing at all wrong with a little gaming.

I tend to lean to either FPS or games like Age of Empires, but can only play FPS against other people, 'cause killing your friends is fun :D

I saw a couple games I used to play a lot, Warlords was a classic and Thief is one of the few FPS that I actually enjoyed playing alone.

As far as my fav's, Heritic and Hexen were the best of the Doom engine games, Duke Nukem 3d, Quake CTF, UT.

No, I always meant to try out Planescape and that northlands campaign they released. (Ice Dagger? or something like that)

Supposedly bioware has shipped off production of NWN II to some other studio and they are going to build 'Dragon Age' instead. Like NWN it'll really be a toolset for gaming that people can expand upon and build their own campaigns. Part of the reason for this is they found the official Wizards of the Coast rulesets to be too restrictive and too much of a headache to work around so they are going to develop their own ruleset for CRPG.

just check out all of these free community made expansions to NWN:

http://nwvault.ign.com/

Now that's a game that keeps on giving. Like I said in my earlier posts, some of the "amatuer" or community made campaigns are much better than the official releases. The official releases just have more movie cutscenes and actor voice overs.

A lot of the enjoyment for me is just seeing the advancement in programming -- AI, graphic/sound effects, etc. Doing tiny programs at school, and then playing Splinter Cell and seeing shadow movement, the movement of curtains when you walk through them, etc.... but maybe I'm just a nerd ;) ......and quite a bit of it isn't geared towards 5th graders.
