No promises on when or if I'll get to anything that you suggest, but I appreciate the fodder for things to think about. Don't worry too much about whether you think a question is answerable - that's part of the fun.

Examples of things that come to mind as stuff I might look at:
-What percentage of OG posters are still active today?
-How have participation rates in individual subforums ebbed and flowed over the years?
-How does the political leanings of the President impact the political leanings of who is active in DC? (This one will be tricky, and I might need a partner who has been a long-term DC participant help me categorize people. I think it's an interesting question, though.)
-What percentage of total posts in each forum come from that forum's top posters (e.g., how many people make up >50% of posts in each forum)?

I'd like to see a graph of Dongers post count by year, 2015 to today.

Typical bar graph, year over year.... Starting in 2015 for no particular reason.

kcgreene 06-27-2023 03:20 PM

I'm just one guy, but I'd be curious if there was a way to see if we could see the ratio of those lurking without an account to active users. As someone who was mainly a lurker almost daily for essentially the last decade, and finally decided to start posting, I'm genuinely curious how many more are like that.

50/50 half of those lurking forgot their login information.

Very possible. Makes one wonder why they haven't made new login stuff or clicked Forgot Password.

Regardless, I'd be curious.

It's true, but who knows - I haven't ever dug into tables that track sessions. They may be in there.

Ha, that's a fun one (and easy). Alas, there are none. However, here are five guys who really show what it means to be lurkers. They all joined in August of 2000, have been active in the past month, but have less than 500 posts.

I'm open to suggestions, but I'm thinking of people with 100+ posts in 2020 (though I'm not sure what the pace of discussion was back then - that may be too high) and seeing what % have at least logged in in 2023.

If memory serves, a whole load of you got sick of the KC Star board and started this place, right?

Bowser 06-27-2023 05:28 PM

How the hell have I been here a year and a half longer than DaFace? That feels like some Mandela Effect shit.....

DaFace 06-27-2023 05:28 PM

I had a fun one in mind, but it may be too heavy of a calculation for the server to handle. I'm trying to find the biggest gap an individual user has ever had between posting, but that requires looking through the entire post table (~14m records), grouping by user, calculating the gaps between each consecutive post, and then returning the maximums. It's been running for about 5 minutes now with no sign of stopping.

Guessing I'm gonna have to cut it off, but it would be fun if I could get it to run... (At least it seems to be responding OK to normal traffic.)

I don't even need a query on that one, though I'm not necessarily confident that it's all accurate. But from what's in the table, CP's first rep was sent by jcl-kcfan2 (who?) to Otter (funny coincidence) on 7/22/2003. The rep itself was "camps in, craps out".

I actually remember that rep. He was referring to me starting threads then leaving. Which I tend to because I'm waiting for a several responses to get a feel on the topic at hand before I respond.

Was working 2nd shift help desk at the time for Exel Logistics supporting in house software named TOPIX that was run on an IBM Iseries. Straight out of college and had all the time in the world at $15 an hour to cruise the net.

Post count isn't everything - I think we're rather have high-quality content more than high-quantity content, but things are definitely slowing down around here. Here's the average number of people logged in per day:

http://i.imgur.com/dbDNSw0.png

My guess is that most of the drop is due to the growth of a lot of other types of social media where people get their news, like ArrowheadPride, reddit, even the Chiefs themselves. I think the age of the flat forum is probably just plain coming to an end. But still, it's part of the motivation to try and see if we can make this place a little more attractive moving forward.

It’s possible you’ve already done this, but I’d love to see an update of this graph in the Mahomes era.

Did we get a boost? Or is it an inverted line where places like this thrive the most in misery?

I update it from time to time, but honestly it hasn't been all that interesting in recent years. It's not completely clear like this, but you can kind of think of CP in four eras:

2000-2003 - Founding and rapid growth
2004-2013 - Continued steady growth
2014-2016 - The decline of the flat forum era
2017-2023 - The era of stability

Beyond that, we saw our biggest growth spikes in posts in 2009 (frustration with the beginning of the Haley and Cassel era?) and to a lesser extent in 2020 (because WTF else did we have to to?) and 2022 (more to discuss with the revamped roster?). In general, though, things fluctuate a little bit from year to year these days, but I think we largely have our set user base, and it just goes up and down a little bit depending on what all we have to discuss.

Anyway, here are the charts since you were interested.

Are you able to look at the net-growth of active posters?

For this, we could define an active poster as someone who posted >=100 times within a calendar year. In-active poster being someone who has posted <100 times within a calendar year.

Also, the mean users looks promising as it seems the forum isn't declining in people who view it when compared to previous years. 2019 maybe elevated due to the interest surrounding the team and the chase for the first ring with Reid/Mahomes and 2020 being an anomaly.

Generally, I'd say that the average daily users metric moves similarly to the total "active" users (>100 posts in the year) metric. Here ya go:
Code:

post        active_users
2000        234
2001        107
2002        17
2003        44
2004        325
2005        555
2006        556
2007        587
2008        602
2009        714
2010        667
2011        657
2012        677
2013        730
2014        620
2015        535
2016        485
2017        517
2018        510
2019        541
2020        534
2021        506
2022        483
2023        356

Note that 2023 doesn't really count yet since there's still plenty of time for more folks to get over 100 posts before the end of the year. Also, I'm pretty sure a ton of posts were lost in the early years due to a database issue, so I would consider those to be unreliable.

Yeah, first 500.

Were you on the old Star board? It’s been a long time ago, but it seems like I remember you being part of that group.

Hammock Parties 06-28-2023 12:38 PM

can you show us the users with the most reps given, and the most reps received

Mecca 06-28-2023 12:51 PM

Man this just reminds me I've been here so long.

DaFace 06-28-2023 12:57 PM

Going back to one of my intial questions I wanted to dive into, of the 234 users who were active in 2000 (100+ posts in the calendar year, which is an admittedly high bar since it was less than half of a year left) there are 53 who have 100+ posts in the past year.

So roughly a quarter of the folks who got this place off the ground 23 years ago are still here. That's actually pretty incredible.

Yeah, I was around, but didn't post a ton. I came over in the exodus as a lurker, mostly having no time to post, so was a bit late signing up.

I'd like to know how many Office gifs Bearcat has used on the board.

I can't easily tell you how many posts are actually office gifs, but I can tell you that he has 693 posts that contain the characters ".gif".

That seems low.

But I did mean it as a joke.

I like would to see a breakdown of post activity in 2022-2023 sorted by the year the users joined. To see what Class is still the strongest.

Already done! (this was in a different thread, so I don't expect you to follow my every post)

These only look at "active users" who have posted at least 100 times in the past 12 months. It's certainly true that there hasn't been as much "new blood" in recent years, but it's not as much of a drop off as I would have guessed (2023 doesn't really count). And it's also kind of amazing that about 10% of our active users have been here since the beginning (51 out of 474 active users).

LMAO

DaFace 06-28-2023 04:29 PM

This one's actually super fascinating (and is definitely an angle that I'd never realized until now). Here are charts that look at our total yearly posts by subforum.

https://i.imgur.com/YVnasNf.png

First, it's interesting how consistent the Lounge post rates have been since 2016. I think we must have all just chilled out at that point.

It's also enlightening that DC actually makes up around a third of total posts around here. (No wonder Kyle doesn't want to get rid of it...) It was even higher in 2020 for reasons I'm sure we can't understand...

Anyway, this is what I like about this stuff. You never know what interesting perspective will come from digging in a little bit.

CP lost its burst when we started running out of shit to complain about

What, like this year?!

That catches a lot of the yarn posts... and then searches for giphy, gfycat, tenor would capture the vast majority of the rest ("giphy" was 500+ going back to 2018 in the regular search tool).

I was in high school when I made the switch from KC star lurking to Chiefsplanet. I never created an account though because I just wanted to read and noobs were treated like noobs. Finally decided to make it official in 2014.
