Cuthbert has played a little bit at 2B but I'm not sure you could put him there full time. I know they've dabbled with him in the OF but I don't believe he's ever played in a game out there. But I'm a big fan, I thought he looked ready last year. If he could play RF it would solve so many problems, but you don't want to throw a guy into the fire in the K's outfield.

This might be the last of Kendrys, 115/117 players in wRC+. Perhaps he is just starting slow, but he's 33 or whatever and maybe last year was a blip. If he's still hitting 210 at the ASB with no power we won't be within 4 games

What would his WAR be in that situation? What was his WAR last year when we won 95 games?

2.1 last year
-0.6 this year (a pace for -3.6)

Kendrys won't end up -3.6 but put it this way: since 2000 there are 2,627 player seasons among regulars. The worst is -2.9 (Neifi Perez 2002).

Cuthbert could play 2B but it would look an awful lot like Daniel Murphy playing 2B.

He just doesn't have the quickness or foot speed to play 2B, which is too bad, because his bat would be a big plus at that spot.

I think he's limited to a corner or DH spot for KC. Probably has to wait another year before he has a real fit in KC (I'm assuming they won't sign another full-time DH and could carry Cuthbert as a reserve 1b/3b/DH type.

Oh, and I missed that O'Hearn had already been promoted to Northwest Arkansas... And that he hit a bomb in his first game there. Promising. He may force his way into the DH picture, too.

So according to War his poor performance is worth one less win than what he would've produced last year assuming that he was around 0.4 WAR at this time last year.

I think WAR is a good way to compare players, but I don't th I the actual wins above replacement is correct.

Like all stats, it is a marker that has good value but not perfect value. Generally speaking, WAR correlates well with wins. But as you know it's been weak for us. Our RISP has been crazy good. Kendrys last year had so many 2-out RBI he was more valuable than his WAR data. This year, we are really struggling in that metric

It's 17-3 Rockies over the 49ers... in the 5th inning.

And the game is in San Francisco.

We are 14-14 while PyThag and BaseRuns have us 12-16 expected. Over the course of the year that would result in a +11 win total which is what we did last year (95 actual vs 84 expected). Net: we haven't been unlucky this year

Moustakas has a "sesamoid fracture" where the thumb and palm meet. It was detected on Monday. Moose wanted to try to play through it.

Royals hope Moustakas is only out 15 days or so.

Moustakas will see a hand specialist (Dr. Tom Graham) here in Cleveland. Moustakas thinks he sustained the fracture in Anaheim.

He changed his swing before last season to try to hit for more power, and it was a disaster. Guess he's found a middle ground between that and this year, because he had a great start in Arkansas. Will be interesting to watch his progress in Omaha.

He's athletic enough to consider playing in a corner OF spot for a while... If he continues to mash the ball and shows good OF instincts, could be an option in RF in the second half.

KChiefs1 05-07-2016 03:38 PM

Minor-league housekeeping: 3B Hunter Dozier headed to AAA Omaha; Kyle Zimmer starting for Class A Wilmington today as he builds up innings.

Ryan O'Hearn, Matt Strahm, Alec Mills (I still don't see much to get excited with re: Mills, but he keeps producing).

Bonifacio, Dozier among many position players having a nice bounce back year.

He's a good defender at 3B, but if he could handle RF, would give them nice flexibility. If they re-sign Moustakas, Dozier sticks in RF. If they don't, he takes over at 3B.

I don't know who his swing coach was before last year - he was so awful I would blame Jack Maloof/Andre David - but that person should never coach swings again, because he ****ed Dozier up badly.

Dozier is a good defender at 3b, so if he hits at all, he should be a valuable guy.

Also think Jorge Bonifacio might have to be part of a trade package if KC makes a move at the trade deadline. He's hitting now but doesn't have the chops to play RF in the K. He might be able to handle LF, but with Gordon signed long-term, he's pretty much blocked.

So does that make Cuthbert trade bait or maybe a 3rd base plan B if Dozier can play OF and Moose leaves?

I think he's quality depth. Doesn't have the upside of Dozier, but he is a good guy to have. Great attitude, takes quality ABs, can play 3b or 1b reliably and could play 2b in a pinch.

All depends on how he and Dozier perform over the next 12-18 months.

In 2014 I was in Chicago when they got to .500 and then I was at the game the next day when they went one game over .500 one week after the ASG.

We were 50-50 or something like that at that point and that same team went to the ****ing WS. It's ****ing May. They've sucked ass, but my ****ing lord this season is still young.

C3HIEF3S 05-09-2016 01:36 PM

But I'm bracing for a sweep this series. Young, Medlen, Ventura pitching in Yankee Stadium..

Hoping for the contrary, but Young can't even keep the ball in Kauffman Stadium this year. Offense better be ready to go if we have a prayer of taking two games in the Bronx. Baseball is a funny game though so let's see what we've got.

We have a couple of terrible starting pitchers, our bullpen before Herrera and Davis has been average at best and our offense is awful. We are next to last in runs scored in the AL and we have played one more game than the only team that we have outscored.

It isn't time to panic, but we need to get back to playing great defense with a great bullpen and having some timely hits.

I would be in favor of Wang or Gee, whoever they like better, getting Young's next start. I see the point in letting him try to beat Atlanta, but if he does, what does that mean? I don't think that would really mean he is ready to roll. It's time to see what else we have.

I tend to agree, but I bet Ned gives him the Braves to "boost his confidence." And the next time Young faces a real team, he'll get creamed again.
