I'm wondering how much creative input Stan Lee had in the making of these movies. Shit has been terrible since he died.

Just don't have much use for this cinematic universe after Endgame, especially after they shifted so hard into shoehorning in a bunch of woke nonsense into virtually every scrap of media they produce. Hopefully DC can FINALLY get it's shit together and make some progress on their own cinematic universe without having to reboot the damn thing every other year.

Deadpool with Loki... I love it.

Where I am right now.
1. Captain America: Civil War 2. Avengers: Infinity War 3. Avengers: Endgame 4. The Avengers 5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 6. Black Panther 7. Thor: Ragnarok 8. Captain America: The Winter Soldier 9. Guardians of the Galaxy 10. Thor 11. Iron Man 12. Spider-Man: No Way Home 13. Avengers: Ages of Ultron 14. Black Widow 15. Thor: Love and Thunder 16. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever 17. Spider-Man: Homecoming 18. Eternals 19. Ant-Man 20. Captain Marvel 21. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings 22. Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness 23. Spider-Man: Far From Home 24. Doctor Strange 25. Iron Man 3 26. Captain America: The First Avenger 27. Ant-Man and the Wasp 28. Thor: The Dark World 29. Incredible Hulk 30. Iron Man 2 |
So now that four phases are done (at least according to Wikipedia), here's how I scored the movies out, imperfectly.
If you were my #1 movie, you got 30 points. If you were my #2 movie, you got 29 points, and so on. Iron Man 2, my #30 movie, got 1 point. I totaled the points up for each phase and then divided them by the number of movies in that phrase (6 movies in P1, 6 in P2, 11 in P3, 8 in P4). Here's my results: Phase 1: 12.67 points/film Phase 2: 14.00 Phase 3: 18.73 Phase 4: 14.14 Observations: I loved Thor more than anybody else, and Iron Man was excellent, but Phase 1 (and the entire MCU) was really saved by The Avengers. It had some epic stinkers to start the MCU off. Phase 3 was just an insane hot streak for any cinematic universe. Aside from GOTG2, Civil War, Black Panther, Ragnarok, all epic films, there were also both Infinity Wars movies, which were perhaps the most epic things ever put to screen. I have Phase 4 ticked slightly above 2 as my second favorite phase. But oddly enough the highest rated P4 film I have was No Way Home at 12. The lowest rated P4 film I have is Multiverse of Madness at 22. I have P1, P2, and P3 films all rated lower than Multiverse of Madness. So while I do think that P4 has been strong, the reason people may feel blah about it is that they're all very same-y in quality. |
Phase 4 has just been terrible IMO. Only Spiderman:NWH was worth a shit.

You don't remember watching half a movie where RDJ was just getting drunk and Rhodey jumped from "come on man, it's time to sober up" to "I'm now wielding a continental WEAPON AT YOU STAND DOWN" in the span of about 20 seconds. Every phase has had its stinkers. |

It's a solid comedy, actually gave Valkyrie and Portman things to do. The villain had real motivations and I felt was brilliantly acted, and the cosmic aspect was enjoyable -- at least for me. The biggest, dumbest issue for me was Russell Crowe as Zeus -- holy shit did they implode with that idea. They should have gone with literally anybody with some (a.) gravitas and (b.) any knack whatsoever for comedy. Tim Curry would have crushed that role. I also thought the climax with Thor magically being able to infuse his power into children came from nowhere. Overall, more good than bad I think. |

Don't get me wrong, Feige has really messed up with Phase 4 and I'm sure that wasn't the only problem, but it is also apparent that Waititi went off the deep end quite a bit in Love and Thunder. Both things can be; and probably are, true. |

Eternals is an absolutely bananas plot with okay writing and varied acting. At least one top-tier fight scene -- it's fantastic. You'll know it when you see it. Shang-Chi and Ant Man 2 have their moments but the writing is just up and down across the board. Shang-Chi does have a fantastic fight scene. Ant Man 2:

There's a reason the "best friend" role exists -- they provide context and levity and all the things the main character can't do. She could do a lot of that if they had built her a bit more. The writing of the movie was insanely interested in Ta Lo and the Mandorin and the legend of the Ten Rings. Which, fine. Then just excise the character you're not interested in. |

I won't lie, I was kind of hoping for John Krasinski and Emily Blunt to play Reed and Susan Richards. They just feel like naturals for those roles.
Unless of course they're going to do some semblance of the Council of Reeds, but that may be WAY too advanced for Phase 5. |

Krasinski has been a fan favorite for it; Driver is a decent consolation prize.

Is this new news?
I'm reading that my favorite Marvel character, the Sentry, is going to be introduced in the upcoming movie The Thunderbolts. They're casting him right now, and they're targeting a person of color for the role to get away from comparisons to Homelander. I cannot ****ing wait how they bring the Void to the screen. Holy crapola. Edit: I will say, I am somewhat concerned over this, however. We've seen Superman-esque characters fighting a team of heroes several times in the past year. Guys who can fly, have super strength, laser eyes. Homelander is the obvious one, Omni-Man in Invincible, Ikaris from the Eternals, and even Superman himself in Justice League. I think they need to tweak the Sentry pretty aggressively here, to change him from being a Superman clone. Obviously, you're going to want to lean in on the Void, but when he's in Sentry mode, consider giving him a different set of powers of some kind. Sentry in the comics could do literally everything anyway. |

Black Widow Shang-Chi The Eternals Multiverse of Madness Love & Thunder Some will defend one or another, and some were better than others, but they were all bad movies (Shang Chi was the best of the lot, and might be considered mediocre rather than bad). Every one of them saw the problems start at the beginning: the script/storyline. Wokeness, some bad acting, too much needless CGI, and other things also combined to make the problem. And we could see this coming at least as far back as with Captain Marvel (I would argue that the seeds of the rot were planted in Black Panther). |
Pushed back release date for The Marvels and new poster.

Shang-Chi was just a formulaic CGI fest. Should of been MCUs version of The Raid or Enter the Dragon or something else. The problem Phase 4 had was instead of altering the Marvel Formula to fit the character they just square pegged round holed the movies and the writing certainly had taken a downturn. |

Shang Chi was an excellent movie. Dr Strange 2 was meh, but not terrible. Black widow wasn't good. The Eternals sucked really bad. Thor Love and Thunder was a complete ****ing abomination of a movie and definitely had too much needless CGI. Wokeness had nothing to do with how bad these movies are. You and a couple others idiots obsession with calling everything woke is about as reeruned as you can get. |

Following this up, you can just look at history. Take a look at the BvS thread in this forum. Just go from pages 18-21: http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showt...batman&page=18 You get a bunch of people overrating a shit movie, because they're too uncritical as both movie lovers and fanboys. Not to toot my own horn, but just because I did offer reasoning, compare my posts in those pages to the posts of those who were liking and defending the movie, and you'll see (hopefully) what I'm talking about. Then go do the Suicide Squad thread http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showt...hlight=suicide and some of the last Star Wars trilogy threads, and the reality that this place (which is really a bit of a microcosm of the U.S. movie geek world generally) is really shitty when it comes to giving good movie going advice should be obvious to you. Everyone hates some great movies and likes some shitty movies, and that's fine. But that's also why the only way anyone should look at reviews for the sake of choosing whether to invest in the movie is to find reviewers who's likes/hates closely reflect their own over time. And it's also why people should acknowledge the quirk (yeah, I know that X is a great movie, but I couldn't get into it/yeah, I know that Y is a bad movie, but I really liked it anyway). |

I'm really late to the party. Watched the latest Thor and Dr. Strange movies. I don't think I remember anything about Thor other than it was trying too hard to be funny. And the whole Wanda/Scarlet Witch storyline didn't really engage me because her motivations make absolutely no sense. I don't have Disney+ and am not going to be watching the series tie ins. I guess I've gotten old and lost interest in all of this; I want a good story instead of a bunch of fancy effects and pretty people. Star Trek, Star Wars, MCU, DCU... What I have seen is that they have a hard time coming up with a good story and relatable characters.

Speaking of Thor - I just got around to watching the Snyder cut of Justice League, and it got me wondering if we'll ever see the director's cut of Love and Thunder. Supposedly they shot 4 hours' worth of film only to cut literally half of it and change the relationship between Thor and Zeus doing so. On top of that, there was supposedly going to be a scene where Jane's Thor was battling Galactus to go with a TON of other cosmic side stuff? Maybe one day we'll get a Waititi cut of Love and Thunder. |

FTR, I completely get the point he's making about the multiverse angle, but I don't really care about that. I actually dig it, even if it's a cheat code for the writers. What I do agree with is the storytelling has gone to shit since the Ragnarok/Infinity War/Endgame wrap up of Phase 3. That's one hell of a high standard to have to match going forward with every single item they're putting out, but some of this shit has been just that - shit. Have a better product and nobody is going to care about the machinations of the overall storyline, imo. Just be good and entertaining. |
Quote:

I get it. The movies and tv shows for the most part have sucked but that was almost guaranteed to happen eventually. End Game was their high point and nothing was going to be as good as that after. It's also why I haven't really watched any movies in Phase 4. Still haven't watched the new Dr. Strange movie or the new Thor movie. Watched No Way Home and thought it was great. Haven't watched a lot of the TV shows but that's more because the characters they have...don't ****ing interest me.
But did people actually think that these movies were just going to continue to be A+ movies across the board? They aren't making them for comic fan boys. They're making them for mass audiences of different genders, ages and interests. They aren't going to follow the comics to a T because that isn't going to bring in money. Maybe I just stopped giving a shit once they hit that End Game payoff and I don't really get the hate of "Marvel movies suck now!". Then stop watching them. Find shit that you enjoy watching. |
