http://kansascity.sbnation.com/misso...-ncaa-eligible Tony Mitchell Missouri Case: NCAA Reviewing New Information Jan 17 12:50p by Joel Thorman The case of Tony Mitchell and the Missouri Tigers continues on. CBS Sports Seth Davis relays new information on the situation that, as of now, has Mitchell ineligible for Missouri's spring semester. Davis characterizes this as a "longshot from the beginning." Mitchell is currently short of the NCAA's requirement on core courses following the "questionable circumstances" surrounding his departure from high school. One of the reasons the case has gone on for so long, according to Davis, is that Missouri has had trouble getting information from the Center of Life Academy in Florida, Mitchell's former high school. Via Seth Davis: Last week, the NCAA informed Missouri that Mitchell will not be declared eligible for the second semester. The school and the NCAA were preparing to make that decision public, but late last week Missouri received a FedEx package from Center of Life Academy which it hopes will help Mitchell's status. The NCAA is reviewing that new information, and we should have a final word by the end of this week. So until this new information came along, Missouri was ready to announce that Mitchell wouldn't be coming to Columbia, Mo. The deadline to add/drop classes for the spring semester is next Tuesday, Jan. 25. The key to take out of this -- we're expected to find out by the end of this week. |
Will Mitchell do any good this year after missing so much time?

The ceiling for this squad is much lower without Mitchell. If a team hopes to go far in the tournament, it has to have 1 of 2 things: 1) Size 2) Smarts This is the absolute dumbest basketball team I've ever seen. The veteran leadership on the squad is English (a complete moron), Denmon (great streak shooter, doesn't play within the offense at all and just isn't a great decisionmaker) and Bowers (charmin soft). Sure, they could get on a hot streak and beat a team or even two, but they'll lose to the first good team that pushes them for a whole game. They're simply not smart enough not to beat themselves. However, size makes up for a lot of stupid. If Mizzou had a strong post presence to to play alongside Ratliff and rip down some of those loose balls that are killing us down the stretch, they won't have to play nearly as clean a ballgame. Let's face it - these guys aren't going to get smarter. Kim English isn't going to become Shane Battier and Marcus Denmon isn't going to turn into Hollis Price. It's a team of very stupid ballplayers and the only way they'll survive it come tournament time is to get a lot tougher underneath. Mitchell may be the difference between a round of 32 squad and a team that's a darkhorse Final 4 squad. But alas - he's gone. |

I think most mu fans here have a pretty normal interest in the basketball team considering we are in the Official Mizzou Basketball Repository Thread. |

As Mizzou is an abbreviation that springs from "Missouri State," saying Mizzou State is the same as saying Missouri State State. DJ - I disagree with you in saying this is the dumbest team. Especially compared to those Quin Snyder teams. I think your take on Marcus Denmon is pretty far off - he's a good passer, he screens well, and he moves crisply and with urgency when cutting. English makes a lot of dumb plays. Won't argue with that. But he has become a much more effective defender, rebounder and passer this season. I thought he played a really great second half against ksu. Tough to live with his 2-5 1 vs. 5 drives/turnovers a game, though. And on Mitchell... if they get him eligible - and that's a slight possibility, if not a liklihood - he can contribute. Even if he can only play 15-20 minutes a game, his athleticism and energy will be useful. I think he'll make the Tigers MUCH more effective when running the jumbo press (with the big guarding the in-bounds passer). My main concern will be his ability to pick up the rotations and etc. defensively. You can do SOME things to hide him there (relying on the matchup zone, etc), but Missouri's defense breaks down if people aren't rotating correctly, and Anderson does some really complex stuff there. |
