And a good bit of it hits harder than Ned. At least I'd argue that.

Ned got the easy out. The "farewell, we barely knew ye" exit.

I made it about 20% of the way through storm of swords yesterday because everything I've read/heard has that being the best of the 4 so far and I've also been lead to believe that I'm about to lose some pretty damn good characters.

Please let one of them be Catalyn Stark. With every additional chapter, I come to like her less and less.

Spoiler!

Not having read the books, I would really like to thank everyone who has read them and posted in this thread. You all have been VERY respectful of not spoiling Ned's death and other aspects of the story line that have developed.

Never read the books, damn good show (almost too much boob, a little embarrassed to recommend it to others).

Can I get some confirmation that Stark, if not a 'good guy' per se, is at least a likeable figure? Sean Bean is pretty much a badass even when he's evil (Travelian in Goldeneye) or a flawed hero (Lord of the Rings).

I can't bring myself to dislike the guy.

Yeah - ain't that about a bitch.

Fortunately I read well ahead of the series or I'd have been just like that '****a ned' guy.

I can't decide if I want to read the books or not after the season is over.

On one hand, I can't get enough of the story and am dreading the long wait until Season 2 starts up.

But on the other hand, all of the story's novels have not been released yet; if I read everything that has been released, I will still be waiting to see the conclusion of ASOIAF, only I will be deeper in the story.

Hmmmm.....

Spoiler!

I have predicted that Robb will die soon. The bastard son is built up as way more of a sympathetic main character.

You could always just read ASOIAF and hold off on Clash.

That would catch you up on details that were missing from the show without spoiling season 2...

I also think Mrs. Ned will eventually accept him as a son via something loyal/heroic he does. Am I right, those who have read the books?

Obviously you mean A Game of Thrones. ASOIAF is the name of the entire series.
