This is sub par.

He's not wrong. A links course with soft greens and no wind plays not much more difficult than a tough muni, and is the easiest setup pros will encounter on tour.

It's definitely a very good round, but it wasn't even close to Thomas' round at the US Open last month, which itself wasn't an especially great round.

No different than what happened at the 2015 Masters. Spieth tying Tiger's 270 doesn't mean very much when several others are in the low 270s and Tiger won by 12 shots.

If he had only shot 63, I would agree with you. But 62 has never been done before. EVER.

Regardless of the circumstances, that's special, and will rightly be remembered as an all time great round.

I will agree that a course like this when it's calm, with greens at 9.5, means that a 62 maybe isn't as great as 63's of previous majors. Still, "not in the top 50" is an exaggeration.

Spieth's tournament to lose? I have a 8:00 tee time at Buffalo Ridge Springs in the morning so I'm going to miss the finish. Dang! Oh well playing the Ridge is a good thing.

I just love the bunkers here. Absolutely wearing these guys out...

Have you ever played this course? If not your opinion isn't worth spit.

Even if you have you haven't played under major championship pressure. This is a great accomplishment and you use conditions like there have never been ideal conditions in the long history of the open.

Would seem to be Speiths tournament, but he has enough murkiness in his golfing history to give one pause. Who can forget 2 in the water at 12 at Augusta.

Having said that, Birkdale has no water. Still, I'm going to watch. You never know.

Bad break for Speith on 1. He hit a good shot.

Stinger 07-23-2017 07:55 AM

Well this start got interesting..... Kuchar gained 2 on Speith in the first 2 holes

Kuchar keeps hitting it down the middle while Speith isn't. Pretty simple thus far.

I was shocked Jordan missed that putt on 2. I thought that was as good as in.

Also, how about DJ, Matsuyama and the others all choking.

Hoopsdoc 07-23-2017 08:03 AM

And Kuchar promptly hits it in the one place you cannot hit it on 3- the front right bunker.

Leaders letting the field back in.

Hoopsdoc 07-23-2017 08:14 AM

How about Haotong Li? Shooting 63 to post -6.
