You can't just leave loaded guns in rooms with kids like that. It appears that she never had time to get a gun safe out of a cabinet or drawer, open it, get the gun and shoot anyway. It looked to me that the man was moving pretty quickly through the house.

By the time she got the gun safe, entered a code/key, and got the gun, he would have been upon her like a fly on shit.

Even if she had an alarm the police/security would have been there in what, 15, 20 mins in a city like that?

You cant! There was NOTHING that the chick could have done to prevent it outsideo f having a gun already on her! Even then, it was little to no chance at her doing anythign with that when a big ass dude starts dropping some one two's on you.

Well, they could keep it somewhere where a kid couldn't reach it, like on top of a bookshelf or an upper kitchen cabinet.

But there's another part of the equation that's often overlooked in these conversations. The second you pull that gun, you have to be willing to possibly end another human's life...I don't know how many people have that in them. And if you pull it...and you suddenly realize you don't have it in you...you're going to find yourself in an imminently more dangerous situation than you already were in.

I wish to god there were more people out there keeping loaded weapons handy and were blowing away people who were committing heinous acts like this, because I do believe it would act as a damn good deterrent. But the sad truth is, for most people, there is no way to defend yourself from such an incident.
