If today is any indication, the 2 team BCS format is best.

#1 vs. #2.

Forget the rest.

This. The Championship game will be #1 vs. #2, which is what it should be.

BryanBusby 01-01-2017 12:16 AM

Nah the BCS format was shit.

This. The backlash the NCAA would face going back to this would be epic.

No. Alabama was a consensus #1. If 5 teams have a good argument that they should be #1, then the system messed up. But as it is, every single team had a reason to not be in the playoffs.

I only care if legit top teams miss the boat. If any team misses on the bubble, they should have taken care of business earlier on.

I think with as many conferences as there are, 8 teams wouldn't be terrible, but there'd still be a huge fight over the 8 seed, just like there is over #4 now. You're just kicking the can down the road.

More importantly, would there be as many upsets? College football doesn't feel quite as upset prone as basketball. Would you be playing a bunch of extra games for nothing?

BryanBusby 01-01-2017 02:19 AM

Why have 5 power conferences if there isn't a mathematical probability each champion can't be represented in a tournament to determine the best team?

ILChief 01-01-2017 08:12 AM

I always wanted a playoff, but since it has become a reality, I'm less interested in college football than I have ever been. I don't know why, as I know it's a better system. Maybe it's nostalgia and not liking what used to be the big games like the Rose and Orange Bowls get no coverage. Maybe it is Alabama fatigue. I know the formerly major bowls host the playoff games, but I couldn't tell you which "bowls" were played yesterday. Maybe it's the playoff games being played on New Year's Eve. I don't know if going to 8 teams makes it more or less appealing

Big 12 isn't a power conference in football.

The FCS has a 24 team playoff that balances an emphasis on winning your conference championship (participating conference winners get an automatic bid to the playoffs) with the opportunity to still make the playoffs if you have a good overall resume but don't win your conference (with 14 at large bids).

Also the FCS playoffs don't have 30+ days between games like the FBS playoff games do (from the end of the regular season to the playoff games), and the FCS National Championship Game takes place two days before the FBS National Championship Game does.

Why can't the FBS replicate the FCS playoff format?

Well by on field quality, no. But I suppose they are in a technical sense.

The Big 10 conference winner didn't get into the playoffs this year but a Big 10 team did and got wrecked.

Not necessarily.

Up until the final selection it was 1 Alabama, 2 Ohio St. If it was still the two team format thats probably what it would have been. They moved Ohio St down to 3 as a gesture that winning your conference matters, but in only a two team format I dont think they would have done that.
