Why the hell you gotta bring Jimmy Buffet into this? What do you have against Margaritas and cheeseburgers????

Betting Al Davis's kid feels like this is his version of signing John Madden to coach the team.. now just kick back and watch the wins come in. Doubtful.

Please remember--this is the Raiders and Mark Davis is still in charge. Along with the ghost of Al.

Mark looks weird but overall he has done a pretty good job , he is no cheapo and has built the team up pretty nicely, When he took over The Raiders could not even get a coach to come here and the team was in cap hell. Reggie has done a damn good job with the cap , a couple of his drafts look bleek but the Raiders are going in the right direction. You don't get to the SB in 5 years from rock bottom (or 50 years for the cheaps)

Brad Johnson had a career record of 72-53, 166 TD's vs. 122 INT's, had a career 61.7 completion percentage and threw for more than 4,000 yards on season while throwing for more than 3,000 yards several times (3,036 and 3,039 in 13 games, 3,406, 3,811 in 16 games, etc.).

I don't get this notion that Johnson was somehow "bad" or below average.

When healthy, he was a solid, if not above average NFL QB.

I have to imagine this is a lot of window dressing and can't be fully guaranteed. What if he ends up disappointing and they want to move on after 5 years? There has to be some sort of buyout language where Davis isn't handing him 50M otherwise this is the stupidest contact in history.

That's the problem with Gruden, though. He has a reputation as a QB guru, but the only QBs he did any winning with were guys that whose dies were already cast long before he arrived on the scene. He had no patience with young QBs as a coach and it severely hamstrung the Bucs until they shitcanned him.

The truth is that he was a Brad Johnson level NFL coach when people make him out to be elite. Personally, I wouldn't have traded the life of an NFL commentator making $6.5 million per year for a coach making $10 million, either, but that's his decision.

I like it. It's a win-win. Fade pays top dollar for an average coach, and the fans don't have to listen to spider 2Y banana anymore.

Agreed.

This seems like more of a P.R. move than a football move.

The Raiders are stuck in Oakland for at least 2 more seasons and they can't sell 50,000 seats, so maybe Gruden's presence will help. It'll also help sell PSL's when the new stadium open in Vegas. I just don't expect him to win many football games along the way.

Also, a contract that runs to 2027?

LMAO

That's insane.

Shit.

But in all honesty, what young QB has Jon Gruden developed? Rich Gannon was plug and play and Brad Johnson was well-seasoned. Jeff Garcia was old as hell.

There's zero guarantee he is gonna fix Carr.

10 years is too long for any coach not named hoodie. The message gets old before then.
You look at most long tenured coaches and the messge is stale before 10 years hits unless you're winning rings.

Deberg_1990 01-05-2018 05:19 PM

We shall see if his heart is truly in it.....or it was just an offer he could not refuse to help pad his retirement account......

at the very least it will be fun having Chucky in the division again.
