I'm close to buying an on duty pistol. I need to sell my tactical mossberg shotgun first though. I never shot it anyways. I'm more into a gun I can actually take out to the range and have fun with. I'll get a Remington someday. So if anyone wants a mossberg 18.5" barrel w/ extra pistol grip it's for sale.
Anyways here's the pistol im seriously interested in. http://www.budspolicesupply.com/cata...products_id=65 Thoughts? |

I finally pulled the trigger and bought a mosin nagant from buds $103. Hopefully everything is good on it. I'm excited to see it, clean it and fire it.

Summit Gun Broker is selling used Glock 40 cals for $365. I assume they're police trades.
I'm not a Glock guy (I prefer single/doubles), but that seems like a pretty good deal. Unfortunately he's out of the HKs. |

Another thing I noticed - used 4x Trijicon ACOG scope for $600. Those things are outrageously expensive new.

Damn good price...wonder how much hell they've been through.

Come at me bro. It's the black color, safety on top, bead sight, 18.5" barrel, extended mag. I can't hit the broad side of a barn with it but my father was blowing everything up with. |

Maybe it isn't in this one, it's in the show me your arms thread. Give me a few and I'll take a picture of it.

I think you got yourself a deal, how do you want to go about the exchange. I'm in st. Louis, will travel to meet halfway. |
You know what sucks about buying ammo online....shipping. It will cost $17 just to ship five 20 rnd boxes of 7.62 x 54r ammo. Damn boxes are only $5 a piece.
|
Yeah, if I buy ammo online I bite 'the bullet' and order 1000 instead of 100. Shipping won't be much different and I only cry once. OR I add a few boxes of ammo to an existing order of something else from Midway. If I'm buying gun parts, cleaner, cases/holsters, etc...shipping price will be pretty much the same with or without the ammo.

Anyone interested in a ATN 330 Aries night warrior/ Night vision scope? I dont use it anymore. Gave up tracking bad men in South America. So it needs a new home.
Its a first generation scope. works well out 130 yards or so. Two weeks ago I bought 500 rounds of 7.62 x39 for $110 with the $18 in shipping. I'm going to kick myself in a month when I have to buy more mosin nagant ammo, should have bit the bullet, cried all day and bought the 440 rnd tin can for $110 |
Quote:
What is the magnification? Is it functional in daylight, or just at night? |
X 3. & you can use it in the day time.It has the day cap for the lens. But I wouldn't take it out in the sun if I could avoid it. That goes for all night vision equipment. Any sun light is bad bad bad.

I guess as long as this is bumped, here's the latest rendition.
Gone are the flash suppressor, grip/light combo and bulky UTG rail guards. Added are the sling mount and sling, Miculek compensator, ladder style rail covers, back up iron sights, and TrebMaxx's bipod. |

Question for you AR experts out there. I have scoped my AR with a 3-9 scope, but left the original front sight on the gun. Should that be removed before shooting it in or will the scope just "look beyond" the front sight and make no difference. Also when you attach the scope rings do you torque them to spec or just tighten them down?
Thanks in advance. |
I left my front sight alone. I dont see it at all through my scope.
|
Took me awhile, but I put the original wood stock back on the Sks. It has a black synthetic stock with a pistol grip also. I loved the synthetic stock but I also dig the original wood stock. I'm torn as to which one I want to leave on permanently.
Couldnt get the damn handgaurd to come off, had to leave it black. |

How hard is it to clean cosmoline off a gun? It doesn't seem tough, but I'm worried about disassembling the bolt and trigger assembly. Is it possible to just dump the both parts in spirits and clean them with a brush or is it best to disassemble the parts completely?
|
Quote:
I know a lot of guys have great success with very hot water or steam. Sure beats using solvents for many tasks. Here's a link to some tips. http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting...line/index.asp |
It's not that bad to clean off but what you must know is that cosmoline protects, not lube. Clean and lube all parts, then hit the range.
|
Thanks for the tips.
It looks like I'll disassemble all the metal, use a steamer on it and then dump it in a bucket of hot soapy water. I'll than scrub all the hard to reach areas with a toothbrush. Repeat that a couple times and than oil the parts. For the wood, I'll either steam it, wipe off, repeat or bake it in the oven. Wish me luck...afraid I'm going to either break a metal piece or ruin the wood. EDIT: I'm alittle concerned with the removal from the wood. Wouldn't steaming it hurt the wood? |
Quote:
I wrap all the wood in paper towels & set it out in the sun for a few hours. flipping it over now & then,so all sides get ampule sun & heat. Then I move on to mineral spirits.. Some will move on to their dish washer next. Ive seen a few really really nice CMP 30 carbines that went threw the old dish washer then onto sanding & refurbishing the stock. The dishwasher will pull out all those nasty dings as well as all the goop that is deep in the wood. I recommend not letting the wife catch ya using her dish washer. She may not understand you loving that old Mil surplus rifle as much as her. Yes steaming will bleach it out. But its worth it. If its a rifle you really like & wanna show off. Then go for it. If it a Commy rifle then get some Russian tong oil. What kind of rifle are we talking about ? Hear is great example by FLYENBRAIN off the THR web site. http://i680.photobucket.com/albums/v...Picture030.jpg You can take a MAP GAS torch & carefully flam out tiger stripes some call it Zebra stripes,on the wood. Something I have always liked. |
I put stock/stock pieces in a black trash bag, laying on a few layers of newspaper or paper towels. Then I set that atop some more newspaper on the dash of my old pickup on a sunny day, roll up the windows. Come out every few hours to wipe the goop off the wood. Today it's going to be mid-90's around here, you should be able to bake a lot of cosmoline out that wood on a day this warm. Price is right.
|
The steam is just a carrier for the heat. The heat is what gets it off, not the water. If you'd like to heat it up a different way, that's ok.
Also keep in mind that the gun likely has a finish already on the wood, and it's quite able to withstand use in the rain/snow/etc depending on it's actual military use. A few minutes in some steam won't ruin a gun finish, but it will greatly aid the removal of the cosmoline. There are things that look like cosmoline that aren't, too, but those generally come off with heat as well. |
Thinking about picking this up:
http://www.rockriverarms.com/images/...s/purelop2.gif http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.c...1b4b6064e14804 Rock River Arms Elite Operator2. Anyone have any experience with it (or the operator2 line in general)? I love the mid-length gas system though I wish it had quad-rails. Looks like a nice shooting gun and RRA has developed a hell of a name for itself. Thoughts? |

That's a little bit better price per round, by $0.023. But no ammo box. |
Picked up the rifle. It's a 1924 Hex reciever Mosin Nagant, didn't look at it enough to see if it was Tula or the other one.
Spent three hours cleaning all the metal inside and out. I than steamed the wood parts and screwed up on the handguard. It left a blueish type strip on the guard. The stock still needs more steam, which I'll do tonight. This is my first time taking this gun apart and the bolt is causing me trouble. Again, I'll figure it out tonight. I also messed up the trigger pull and I really hope a piece fell out of the trigger assembly. I found a tiny pencil led type piece on the cement that I hope is the problem. It didn't have near as much grease as I thought it would. Here's how I cleaned it. Hot Soapy water (dumped all the metal parts in it), scrubbed these parts with a toothbrush, sprayed brake cleaner and a degreaser type substance on it, wiped off and oiled them up. For the stock and handgaurd, I steamed them, it seemed like nothing was coming off though. But you could tell it was doing its job. |

My only concern is that I couldn't mount a gangster grip exactly where I wanted to (it would be pretty far forward with the 1/2 rail). Otherwise it's pretty much perfect. |
Bought a Ruger SR1911 this week. Can't wait to shoot it. Anyone out there have one of these? They just came out this month.

Cool does not equal functional. I'm not going to be going on any commando raids any time soon, and since I have common-wall neighbors on either side of my condo, a rifle that could kill somebody two units away is not the gun I'll go for as a home defender (unless it's zombie apocalyse time and I don't give a shit about errant rounds). I shoot this gun at the range, and at the range all the cool gizmos just get in the way. But buying this stuff and farting around with it is a fun part of the process, so knock yourself out. I certainly don't want to discourage you from doing that. |
I felt like it was much easier to shoot my gun with the vertical grip. Of course I haven't shot it at the range yet, I was just destroying bricks, an old computer and an old DVD player with it from about 40 yards out on my friend's property. Disintegrated a couple of xbox games too - that was fun. I can see how a vertical grip could be useless when shooting from prone or behind a bench at the range, though.
If you really want a grip, DJ, I would get the grip pod which turns into a bipod with a press of button. The bipod isn't going to be as good as the real deal, but it's a sweet compromise if you ask me. |
I might try one of the Magpul angled grips. There's a gun store in the area that specializes in ARs - I'm sure they'll have one mounted on something so I can get the feel of it before buy it.
