There was a mine themed restaurant in the early 80's off cambridge circle and I35. The mine, the shaft, something like that. It was a steak house type place that was cool for a kid. I think it started collapsing or something.

Baby Doe's

Yep....but i don't remember where the nearest Stuckey's was.

Wow. When did that close? It doesn't seem that long ago that we'd stop for shakes on the way back from Columbia.

Makes me think of Casa Bonita in Tulsa. Not quite the same, but it had theming.

Probably close to 10 years since it moved. Been shut down for 3-4.

SuperCenter Walmart and the other chains that have moved in have done what they do: Kill small local operations. Wheel-Inn was a victim of that once it was no longer on the corner.

Not exactly a restaurant of yesteryear, yet.

But in keeping with the tenor of the discussion, Iron Barley is moving out of the city into rural JeffCo. I'm sure it will still be awesome, but now it's a bit of a slog to go.

In the early 80's some Ahole bought the place and tore it down to build a bigger one. It lasted about 6 months be it went belly up.

I believe I only experienced the new place because there were definitely a few tables, maybe 6 or 8. It was pretty good even then. No one I know except the friend I ate there with ever remembers it. I was beginning to think I made it up or something.

Remember right across the highway when Truman Corners had one of the few Smorgasbords anyone had ever heard of. So 'exotic' a concept that the restaurant was merely named 'Smorgasbord?' [EDIT: now that I think, it also incorporated 'Svedenhaus' into it's nameplate]

Grew up a little further south, so Zardas on down 71 was THE ice cream spot for us.

There used to be a tiny little cafe in Warrensburg called "Corner Cafe." Standard cafe fare, but really, really good. Excellent breakfasts, and their burgers were fantastic. They closed sometime in the early 2000s.

The best thing, though, was their prices were from yesteryear. You could get a double burger, fries, and a drink for less than $4. A full breakfast would run you like $3. Probably why they eventually closed. But damn do I miss that place.

Annie's was the best Mexican place in town from the late 70's to the mid-80's. It was always jammed packed in OP and the Plaza and reservations were needed if you wanted a table quickly.

I used to frequent the IB, loved the street signs but dinner in the basement was the coolest thing ever. Owner's wife sold me a case of Bourbon County (6-4 packs $120) on Thanksgiving eve when there was none to be bought in all St Louie.

I lived off 67 and dated a gal in (Pacific coffee + opera house and RJ's) so traveled that area often.

Used to be an old house/ music venue near the new IB location called Villa Magnolia Saw some great shows there but Billy Peek (blues) was my favorite.

Definitely didn't suck - it was 'Americanized' but was darned good and they used good/quality ingredients. Unfortunately we'd generally go to the Bannister Mall location.

I thought it sucked myself Growing up, my mother would go to KC, KS and take cooking lessons from real Mexican cooks in authentic Mexican restaurants. When my mom made Mexican food there were at least 20 people over for dinner.

I never went to the Bannister Mall location, as I grew up mostly in the Overland Park/Lenexa/Shawnee Mission area.

I'd go to the Oak Park Mall location quite a bit and since my Dad worked on the Plaza, I'd occasionally meet him for lunch there or take dates there, especially around the winter holidays.

I'm sure it was "Americanized" but it was all I knew at the time. I recall loving their chips and salsa, along with their "Mexican Pizza".

I wonder if I'd like it today...

1st time I ate at California Taqueria I swore off crap Mexican. I like some things at Tequila Harry's especially the low carb margaritas. Partial to the old SW Blvd location where the cooks were not high school kids but seasoned Mexican cooks.

New York Bakery & Delicatessen- Reuben sandwiches
Torreon Mexican Restaurant
The train that carried food to customers at Fritz's Railroad Restaurant

Cascone's Italian Restaurant in the Market for breakfast

Don Pepe's near KU Med before cocaine

Friday Tamales from "Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Shrine" near the blvd. where the elderly ladies made them as a fund raiser. Bought them by the dozen. Put Ponak's to shame.

Manny's was Tex-Mex. I was talking about the original CT location in an old house a couple of doors off the blvd, When they moved, they sucked!!!!...

I have been away from KC too long as they didn't do that when I was around.

I used to assist a photographer who took pictures of their meat in knife and butcher supply catalogs and someone had to eat the meat afterwards (:D:D:D).

I have always liked the place but Warner's Market in Mission (before closing) was where I bought personal meat as I had a business within throwing distance and I used Fisher's Meat on Troost for large purchases of Prime meat.

I used to buy skirt steak from Bichelmeyer's as no one else had it when I needed it back in the 90's.

After marrying a ranchers daughter I didn't need a butcher very often. I now have "The Savory Swine" when I need a butcher but I try to buy direct from farmers now days.

Tequila Harry's is ****ing nasty. Never again.

I always ate at the SW Blvd location (a lot) because I had a warehouse in the same block and thought what I was served blew Ponak's and Manny's away. It was fantastic compared to Annies!. But then again, the kitchen knew my name and I had done favors for owners and bartenders alike.

I used to drink at the Lee's Summit location (a lot) as the bartender took care of me and most of the bill...due to history. Only had 1/2 price appetizers and they were decent to share with wifey.

North Oak and OP were the same way as they kinda reminded me of Annies SF. Owners came from a Westport Mexican rest. (3 amigos?).
I never ate a meal there, barely even went there but when i did drinks were strong and cheap due to history...

California Taqueria off Southwest was tex mex, sorry. The most popular dish was the burrito spread. Two burritos smothered in cheddar cheese. That isn't mexican. MY favorite mex place is Bickelmiers (sp) meats on saturday mornings. Great tacos el pastor, great carne asada, and killer tamales.

California's was no way Tex mex when they were in the hole...

Bichelmeyer's is awesome and always has been.

My first job was Shoney's on Antioch Rd. That's where I discovered pot and learned to love it. Salad bar was meticulous. Don't eat the cole slaw. There is a good chance there was a loogy or a blown nose in there (not mine).

I'll always have fond memories of Chi-Chis, it was decent tex-mex fare and they always had a rocking little bar in the one I worked at as a kid... they'd let me get hammered after work at age 19

Same thing for The Ground Round, thats where I fell in love with a very specific burger

Buttered and grilled marble rye
Fire grilled high quality burger
Swiss cheese
Grilled onion

There simply isnt a better burger on the planet

Indian Hills ****ry Club.

Great food, free flowing booze and free golf...

Learned how to make a poorboy's Brandy Alexander there and dammed if the girls didn't drop panties for them!!!!

At 17 i was serving them to Muriel Kaufman, even gave her the recipe and got a $29 tip. (lot of money back then.)

Donut King when they were on Choutau Trwy N/o Parvin Rd next to Diamond Joes ( not that I know anything of that place) new location in NKC sucks. Daylite Donuts are good best glazed I ever had Lamars original location. Warm melts in your mouth so rich instant heartburn 5 minutes after devouring.
