I'm betting that McGrath will lose his roster spot to Harris. Harris has way too much upside for them to stash him on the PS this year. 6'7", 260 pounds, 4.5 40, huge catch radius with the ability to box out and high point. Someone is going to sign him to their 53 if we don't this year.

Chiefs Put 2014 OTAs In The History Book
by Bob Gretz

Maybe they went one too many OTAs.

After cruising through nine of the 10 allowable off-season practices, the Chiefs were on the field Friday for their last session. Well their bodies were on the field; their minds appeared to have already left for the weekend.

The offense that had looked so productive and efficient in previous practices produced its worst practice, with the ball frequently on the ground due to botched handoffs. The quarterbacks’ completion percentage took a nose dive, as all four of them seemed to be overthrowing the receivers.

It was obvious it was going to be a bad day when on the first offensive snap against a defense in the practice, quarterback Alex Smith threw a pass directly at safety Eric Berry, who enjoyed the pick six run for a score. Smith seldom misses that badly, so more than likely it was a route that wasn’t run correctly.

Whether Andy Reid planned to shorten the session before practice or not, he stopped things about 30 minutes early and sent the team on its way. They’ll report back for a three-day mandatory mini-camp that begins on Tuesday.

On Friday, there wasn’t much concern from the head coach after practice because it was just part of the normal ebb and flow of practice field work.

“We are getting better,” Reid said of his club’s progress over the 10 practices. “We’ve got a long way to go, but we are getting there. We are getting ourselves wrapped up in a position where when we go to training camp, we can pick up right where we left off here. We’ve got a lot installed.”

Reid’s attention now turns to the mini-camp and he revealed that tight end Travis Kelce and wide receiver Kyle Williams may get the chance to work in the three practices. Kelce is coming off micro-fracture surgery on his knee from last fall and he’s not been able to practice since. Williams was claimed on waivers last November after he was released by San Francisco, but after a week with the Chiefs he suffered a torn ACL that required surgery. Both players were on the field during practices, but did not participate in any fashion.

“We’ll see how all that works” was how Reid described the amount of on-field work for Kelce and Williams during the practices. With the NFL clock ticking towards training camp, the Chiefs don’t want to see either player have a setback from too much activity in the practice.

The coach was asked if he anticipated cornerback Brandon Flowers and outside linebacker Justin Houston to attend the mandatory mini-camp. Both players have boycotted the OTA sessions.

“I don’t know that,” Reid said. “It’s their decisions on whether they come or don’t come. Even though it’s a mandatory camp . . . we’ll see. The thing you can be guaranteed is we’ll coach whoever is here. We don’t worry about the ones that are not. We go about our business.”

Not long afterwards, the Chiefs went about their business with the release of Flowers, waiving the seven-year veteran.

OTA #10 notes and news: there were 78 players taking part in the OTA, the smallest group of the 10 practices. Missing because of injury were wide receivers Weston Dressler (hamstring), Junior Hemingway (strep throat) and Kyle Williams (knee), tight end Travis Kelce (knee) and cornerbacks Chris Owens (hamstring) and David Van Dyke (hamstring). Also not taking part were running back Jamaal Charles, guard Jeff Allen and cornerback Phillip Gaines. Not attending were running back De’Anthony Thomas (league rules), cornerback Brandon Flowers and outside linebacker Justin Houston . . . Returning to practice on at the end of the week were wide receiver A.J. Jenkins (hamstring) and inside linebacker Ben Johnson (hamstring.) . . . Nose tackle Dontari Poe again ran some offensive plays as a fullback in short yardage/goal line situations.

Chiefs finish OTAs, turn attention to minicamp
by Herbie Teope
(highlights)

OTA observations

• Cornerback Sean Smith, who was cited with an alleged DUI early Monday morning, finished the week running with the second-team unit for fourth straight day. Marcus Cooper took Smith’s place on the right side with the first team, while Ron Parker on the left side.

• Reid was non-committal during his post-practice media session to Smith’s return to the first team: “We’ll see,” Reid said when asked how long Smith would stay with the second team. “The other guys are performing well so we will see.” But with Flowers’ release, it wouldn’t surprise to see Smith return to his usual spot.

• Running back Knile Davis took a majority of first-team snaps during 11-on-11 drills in place of Jamaal Charles. Running back Joe McKnight spelled Davis. During a drill, McKnight came across the field open behind the linebackers and dropped a perfectly-placed pass from Alex Smith. This marked a marked second day McKnight has dropped what appeared to be an easy catch after getting behind the coverage.

• With Weston Dressler (hamstring) out, the punt returners during special team drills were Albert Wilson and Frankie Hammond. During kickoff returner drills, running backs Joe McKnight and Kniles Davis rotated with wide receiver Fred Williams. This entire scenario will evolve during mandatory minicamp with the return of rookie De’Anthony Thomas.

• Strong safety Eric Berry picked off quarterback Alex Smith during the first set of 11-on-11 drills for what would’ve been a pick-6 in live game action.

• Tight end Demetrius Harris, who emerged in 10 days of OTA workouts, closed out with two more athletic catches. Harris has been seeing time with the first-team offense alongside Anthony Fasano when the Chiefs go to a two-tight end set.

• Not to be outdone, Anthony Fasano reeled in a nice reception down the seam during a 9-7 drill, catching a well-placed pass from Alex Smith, who also closed out the OTAs with strong performances.

• The Chiefs continued the first-team shuffling on the offensive line during 11-on-11, rotating rookie Zach Fulton and Rishaw Johnson at right guard, and J’Marcus Webb and Jeff Linkenbach at right tackle. Linkenbach also spent time at left guard in Jeff Allen’s absence with Fulton at right guard.

• Fullback Jordan Campbell, a converted linebacker, turned in two straight days of displaying very soft hands when catching ball out of the backfield.

• Quarterback Chase Daniel, who has struggled at times with accuracy during the OTAs, completed a perfectly placed deep pass to wide receiver Fred Williams on the right sideline. Williams beat cornerback Sean Smith on the play.

• Defensive lineman Vance Walker, who signed a three-year, $13 million free-agent deal in March, saw action during a late segment of 11-on-11 drills with what seemed a mix of first- and second-team units. Walker, who has run mostly with backups throughout OTAs, played defensive tackle with Mike Catapano at the left defensive end spot and Mike DeVito at the right defensive end spot.

Chiefs’ Donald Stephenson, Jeff Allen enhanced craft during offseason
by Herbie Teope
(highlights)

Quote:

Left guard Jeff Allen and right tackle Donald Stephenson chose the path to self-improvement by spending late March into early April at the LeCharles Bentley O-Line Performance training center in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The decision for Allen and Stephenson to travel to Arizona came with encouragement from Schwartz, who had arguably one of the best seasons of his career before signing a free-agent deal with Giants in March.

“He pushed me and Jeff really hard,” Stephenson said of Schwartz. “He said he liked the potential in us and he wanted to see us grow, so he recommended us.”

Stephenson said he has a better understanding of the mental aspect and improved strength.

“I feel like a smarter player,” he said. “I won’t know how much stronger I really am until we put on pads. As far as knowing the offense, I’m miles ahead of where I was last year.”

Everyone on defense has been beat a lot. Our success is going to depend entirely upon our front 7. Our best bet is that we end up looking like Carolina defensively. However, our DB issues will be magnified because of the scheme that we play. They're betting an awful lot on a few young guys to develop quickly.

Left tackle Eric Fisher will have a lot of ground to make up because he hasn’t been able to work in the practices and his weight lifting efforts have been stymied a bit because of the shoulder and sports hernia surgeries that he’s had this season. The Chiefs wanted Fisher to add weight, but as he was running across-the-field sprints after Friday’s practice, he looks like he may have lost weight. He’s going to need a lot of weight room time before the second Sunday of September.

planetdoc 06-17-2014 04:19 PM

He probably lost a lot of weight between the hernia and shoulder surgeries, and the 30 lb 'weight gain" was probably just to get him back in the 290-300 lb range.

Justin Houston is absent

As expected.

De'Anthony Thomas exits early

The triumphant return of De'Anthony Thomas to the Chiefs practices was not so triumphant. Thomas hasn't been participating in the Chiefs OTAs due to this odd NFL rule.

The Chiefs were running 7-on-7 drills which required plenty of running for Thomas, who was bearing the high 80 degree temperature (just like everyone else, including me!).

After the 7-on-7 drills, the Chiefs moved to 11-on-11 work. I noticed that Thomas came up slow after the 7-on-7 drills. He looked awfully tired. After walking slowly for a minute, Thomas got back in there and caught a pass in the flat. He ran that to the end zone where he stopped, obviously very winded.

He came off the field and sat on the side with a towel over his head as the Chiefs trainers talked with him.

After practice, the Chiefs said he was sick. Sick of running in really humid weather? Possibly.

More on DAT:
•He was among the group returning punts so it looks like he will get a shot to do that.
•He caught several passes in the flat. I'm anxious to see if he can hit that corner in full pads.
•He lined up at slot receiver and running back. He was in the backfield more than I would've predicted, but it's still early.

Sean Smith is also sick

Maybe it's something going around? I could've sworn I saw Smith out at practice early on but maybe not. We noticed later that he wasn't anywhere to be seen.

The Chiefs said Smith was sick.

In his place, Ron Parker continued to take first team snaps. So we don't know yet if Smith's demotion to the second team will continue this week.

Travis Kelce gets back on the field

Kelce wasn't able to do anything during OTAs, standing off to the side with his baseball cap on. But at mandatory minicamp, he did a little more, including some route-running. He isn't fully back -- he didn't participate in all the team activities -- but he is doing a little more.

The Chiefs said he and Kyle Williams left early to ice down.

That he was participating at all is a good step forward for Kelce.

Weston Dressler remains out

He was one of two players unaccounted for at Chiefs practice (the other being Justin Houston). Last week he hurt his hamstring and remained out this week.

For a new player, it's a tough break. This is the time to learn the offense and get acclimated with the offense. It's especially important for a player like Dressler who has a shot to contribute.

Junior Hemingway, back from strep throat last week. took the majority of the snaps at slot.

Four tryout players take part

Those players were Rutgers WR Mark Harrison, Cal Poly St. WR Cole Stanford, Utah State CB Quinton Byrd, Missouri CB Kip Edwards.

Harrison had an excellent catch where he had to go up and get a deep ball. He displayed his size and strength to pull it down.

More observations
•Refs were in attendance. It looked like some sort of training exercise for them.
•Eric Fisher continues to sit out team drills and any contact drills.
•Zach Fulton and Jeff Linkenbach took turns at right guard. Linkenbach also saw some time at right tackle.
•Alex Smith had a nice deep pass to Jamaal Charles. Considering he was in the open field, Charles takes that one to the house.
•Also, a screen pass later on to Jamaal would've been a big gain.
•Nice toughness from Donnie Avery to catch a slant pass with Marcus Cooper draping over him.
•AJ Jenkins had two consecutive catches. One of them he stumbled trying to turn up the field and the other he was left alone for the catch.
•Sanders Commings had an interception on a deep pass down the left sideline from Smith to Jamaal.
•Vance Walker saw some first team snaps at defensive end.
•Chris Owens was back at the nickel after missing time lately with an injury.
•I saw some plays where Eric Berry and Sanders Commings were lined up deep at safety while Husain Abdullah was in that linebacker role.
•Other Chiefs players on the sidelines were blocking my view so I didn't see the play but I heard a big cheer and saw Jamaal come running out of a crowd. Good bet Jamaal made a great play.
•Athletic fullback? Anthony Sherman leaped high to pull down a pass in the flat.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Some observations from the first Kansas City Chiefs minicamp practice:

Linebacker Justin Houston continued his holdout. Houston, who hadn't participated in any of the offseason practices, was again absent. The Chiefs can fine him for missing minicamp, the only mandatory event of the offseason for players. Cornerback Sean Smith (illness) and wide receiver Weston Dressler (hamstring) also did not participate. Rookie running back De'Anthony Thomas left practice early. He appeared to be overcome by the heat. Tight end Travis Kelce (knee), wide receiver Kyle Williams (knee) and tackle Eric Fisher (shoulder) participated only in individual drills.

In Houston's absence, it appears Dee Ford's time has come. The first-round draft pick received all of the first-team snaps for the first time this spring. Ford appeared to handle all of his assignments well.

Tight end Demetrius Harris continued to make some impressive catches. He took an interception away from Derrick Johnson with a nice grab and later caught an Alex Smith pass that was low and behind him.

Thomas hadn't participated in offseason practices since a rookie camp shortly after the draft. But the Chiefs wasted no time getting him back into the playing rotation. He got some work as a running back, slot receiver and was even split wide on occasion before he left practice.

Sanders Commings is getting some work as an extra defensive back in passing situations and he had a nice interception of a Smith pass.

De’Anthony Thomas feels the KC heat, falls ill at Chiefs minicamp
by TEREZ A.

In his first practice back with the Chiefs since the club’s rookie minicamp in May, fourth-round running back/receiver De’Anthony Thomas not only got a lot of work, but also a good idea of what it’s like to work in the Kansas City heat.

Thomas, who is listed at 5 feet 9 and 174 pounds, missed all 10 voluntary offseason workouts because the NFL prohibits players from practicing with their new teams until their college’s academic calendar is complete. Final exams for Oregon — which runs on the quarter system — weren’t done until Friday.

As temperatures approached 90 degrees Tuesday in Kansas City, Thomas saw plenty of time as a running back and slot receiver and put his quickness on display on a few occasions. Toward the end of practice, however, Thomas could be seen laying on his back in the end zone. He later went to stand in the shade.

A team spokesman said Thomas got ill during the practice.
Kelce and Williams back in the mix

Chiefs coach Andy Reid hinted last week that tight end Travis Kelce and receiver Kyle Williams, who are both recovering from knee injuries, would get a little more work this week, and his prediction came true.

Both Kelce, who had microfracture surgery, and Williams, who is recovering from a torn ACL, participated before heading inside the practice facility to be iced down. Cornerback David Van Dyke, who has missed the last few weeks because of a hamstring injury, did the same.

A couple of players who missed last Thursday’s practice because of injury also returned to action Tuesday, including receiver Junior Hemingway (hamstring), cornerback Chris Owens (hamstring).

Three players who missed last Thursday’s practice because of personal reasons were also in attendance, including cornerback Phillip Gaines, left guard Jeff Allen and running back Jamaal Charles.

Receiver Weston Dressler (hamstring) did not practice.

A team spokesman said cornerback Sean Smith was excused because of illness.
New additions

Former Mizzou cornerback Kip Edwards, cornerback Quinton Byrd, receiver Mark Harrison and receiver Cole Stanford were invited to participate in the team’s three-day mandatory minicamp.

Byrd, it should be noted, has been assigned No. 24, Brandon Flowers’ old jersey number.

Mini-Camp Day #1 Report/Houston Absent
by bob gretz

The Chiefs kicked off their three-day mandatory mini-camp at their facilities Tuesday and outside linebacker Justin Houston was absent, just as he’s been for the Chiefs entire off-season program.

With one year remaining on his contract, the NFL’s labor rules require Houston to attend the mini-camp. By missing the first day, the Chiefs have the opportunity to fine him $11,575 and more than $69,000 if he misses all three days.

Of the 89 players on the roster, 86 took part in Tuesday’s practice. Missing were Houston, cornerback Sean Smith (ill) and wide receiver Weston Dressler (nursing a hamstring injury.)

On the same day that No. 50 was boycotting mini-camp, it appeared that Houston’s spot in the starting lineup was no longer held by Frank Zombo. First-round draft choice Dee Ford was running with the first team on Tuesday.

And, another rookie was also in the starting lineup, as sixth-round choice Zach Fulton opened at right guard.

Last week’s release of starting cornerback Brandon Flowers and Smith’s absence due to an illness made for a shuffling at the position. Marcus Cooper moved from left to right and Ron Parker stepped into the starting lineup at left corner.

The Chiefs were excited about seeing another one of their draft choices, fourth-round running back De’Anthony Thomas. Under NFL rules, Thomas was unable to participate in the OTA sessions, after working and impressing coaches in the rookie mini-camp.

Whether due to the weather conditions (hot and very humid) or a lack of conditioning, Thomas started the practice but did not finish. He appeared physically gassed with about one hour of work remaining, taking a knee after a long run with a pass from quarterback Alex Smith and then laying down on his back. The training staff escorted him to the locker room.

Three injured players worked in the position drills and then the installation period: left tackle Eric Fisher (shoulder), tight end Travis Kelce (knee) and wide receiver Kyle Williams (knee). Once the practices went offense against defense, they were done for the day.

Kelce and Williams both looked good in their limited time running pass routes and catching passes.

Here are observations from Tuesday’s practice:

– Possibly due to the longer than normal OTA practice, or maybe the high temperatures and humidity, tempers flared for the first time on the practice field this year. Guard Ricky Henry and defensive tackle Dominique Hamilton tussled for a brief moment late in the afternoon. No damage was done, and it may have just been a little Big 12 rivalry showing itself – Henry went to Nebraska and Hamilton played at Missouri.

– There were a lot of balls on the ground for the Chiefs No. 1 offense, whether passes were knocked down, dropped by receivers or poorly thrown by the quarterbacks. Both Alex Smith and Chase Daniel has passes knocked down by the pass rush. In a blitz drill, Smith was surrounded by the defense and lost control of the ball for a fumble. Safety Sanders Commings picked off Smith on a deep throw.

– For the first time in the off-season work, defensive end Vance Walker was getting some snaps with the No. 1 defense. Signed as an unrestricted free agent from the Raiders, Walker was decidedly second-team for the Chiefs first 10 practices. On Tuesday, he was working in with starters Allen Bailey and Mike DeVito.

– Four players are participating on a tryout basis in the mini-camp. Wide receiver Mark Harrison had one of the best catches of the day, catching a jump ball pass thrown by quarterback Aaron Murray. Harrison was signed as an undrafted free agent last year by New England, but was cut last spring. He drew interest with a clocking in the 40-yard dash of 4.3 seconds.

Joining Harrison were running back Cole Stanford from Cal Poly, cornerback Quinton Byrd out of Utah State and former Mizzou player Kip Edwards, a 6-1, 200-pound cornerback who went undrafted last year, signed with Buffalo and then ended up spending time on the Minnesota practice squad.

OLB Justin Houston a no-show at minicamp
by Herbie Teope
(highlights)

Tight end Travis Kelce (knee) was back on the practice field for the first time since Week 4 of the 2013 regular season. The second-year tight end participated in individual drills and appeared to run without limitations, even making a leaping grab from quarterback Alex Smith.

“I thought he looked great,” Smith said of Kelce after Tuesday’s practice. “It’s great to see him out here. He’s been working his tail off for a long time now and it’s tough work behind the scenes. He’s been here trying to get it right, so this is just the next step for him. I thought he looked good.”

Kelce was present during the OTAs, but didn’t take part in any drills as he recovered from an early October microfracture knee surgery.

Meanwhile, wide receiver Kyle Williams (knee) and cornerback David Van Dyke (hamstring) participated during individual drills. Williams didn’t participate during OTAs as he recovered from a November ACL surgery. Van Dyke missed the final seven days of OTAs.

Kelce, Williams and Van Dyke left the field during team-related drills to get iced as part of their treatment.

Players back on field after missing time last week are cornerback Chris Owens (hamstring), wide receiver Junior Hemingway (illness), cornerback Phillip Gaines (personal), left guard Jeff Allen (personal) and running back Jamaal Charles (personal).

• Running back/specialist De’Anthony Thomas left the field late into the practice with an illness. Prior to walking off the field top receive attention from the training staff, the Chiefs used Thomas in a variety of positions during a humid afternoon practice. He lined up in the backfield, the slot and returner.

• Rookie guard Zach Fulton got a lot of work with the first-unit during 11-on-11 drills. The Chiefs rotated Rishaw Johnson in place of Fulton as drills progressed. Jeff Linkenbach saw work at right tackle with Donald Stephenson continuing to fill at left tackle for Eric Fisher (shoulder, limited).

• Rookie outside linebacker Dee Ford took Justin Houston’s spot with the first team during 11-on-11 drills. Frank Zombo, who saw a lot of action with the first team during OTAs, rotated with Ford and also saw action with the second team.

• With cornerback Sean Smith not practicing, the first-team defensive secondary during 11-on-11 was Marcus Cooper at right cornerback, Ron Parker at left cornerback and Chris Owens at the slot. Cooper and Parker ran with the first team at those positions the last three days of OTAs

• Returning to action after missing time last week, wide receiver Junior Hemingway worked mostly out of the slot with the first-team offense.

• For the most part, defensive end Allen Bailey continues to get work with the first-team defense on the left side at Tyson Jackson’s former spot during 11-on-11 drills. However, Vance Walker, who ran mostly with a mix of the second- and third-team unit during OTAs, saw work with the first team.

• Wide receiver A.J. Jenkins, who missed some OTAs with a hamstring injury, made a nice play down the field after beating cornerback Marcus Cooper to catch pass from quarterback Alex Smith. Jenkins made another deep catch from quarterback Tyler Bray.

• Quarterback Aaron Murray connected down the field with tryout wide receiver Mark Harrison, who made a leaping grab over tryout cornerback Quinton Byrd.

• While he had some drops, tight end Demetrius Harris made a nice grab on a pass quarterback Alex Smith threw behind him. Harris’ momentum carried his body forward, but he adjusted his hands to reach off to the side to snatch the ball.

• The Chiefs used running backs Joe McKnight and De’Anthony Thomas, tryout wide receiver Cole Stanford, and wide receivers Albert Wilson and Frankie Hammond as returners during punt drills.

• Free safety Sanders Commings intercepted an Alex Smith pass down the left sideline intended for running back Jamaal Charles.

I dont think theres any advantage to working players out in heat. I'd just assume take them indoors and get as many reps as possible... If training in heat were beneficial then fighters would pump up gym temps to prepare for fights

The defense we're running relies a lot on holding the WR's like Seattle does. I would bet its harder to do without pads on. I'm not sure though. I'm interested to see how it plays out but I think that our secondary will be much improved over last year, particularly if Berry plays deep safety

Fighters fight indoors in a relatively controlled environment. We goin to play in Miami this year bitch is gon be hot. You do become acclimated by working in the heat.

Football for most is played outside. Fighters fight inside most of the time. I see the logic in what youre trying to say, but I thinks its better they practice in the conditions they may play in. Better for a guy like dat to know know he needs more water and minerals now than come game time. Besides, it wasnt that hot out today.

Speaking of DAT I met him the other day. he walks with that sprinters type limp that fast guys have. He's much thicker than Mccluster in person but both guys are the same height.

Rookie Fulton mounting challenge at RG
by adam teicher

Some observations from today's Kansas City Chiefs minicamp practice:

Rookie Zach Fulton, a sixth-round draft pick from Tennessee, continued his bid for a starting spot at right guard. Fulton split the starter's snaps with Rishaw Johnson. The Chiefs will get a better gauge on how advanced Fulton is at training camp, where they can wear full pads. But for now at least they are pleased with what they have seen from Fulton.

The Chiefs again practiced without linebacker Justin Houston, who is holding out, and cornerback Sean Smith, who is ill. Offensive tackle Donald Stephenson (calf), tight end Sean McGrath (knee) and cornerback Phillip Gaines (ankle) left practice early. Tackle Eric Fisher (shoulder), wide receivers Weston Dressler (hamstring) and Kyle Williams (knee) and tight end Travis Kelce (knee) participated only in individual and position drills. Left guard Jeff Allen moved to left tackle after Stephenson left practice.

Nose tackle Dontari Poe made an impressive play for a big man. He began a pass rush but quickly sniffed out a screen pass. He hustled over to the receiver, Jamaal Charles, and trapped him in the backfield.

Tight end Anthony Fasano had a big day, making several catches.

Aaron Murray didn't get a lot of snaps at quarterback, but he made the throw of the day when he zipped a sideline throw to Deon Anthony that drew raves from his teammates.

Running back Knile Davis struggled to learn to catch kickoffs last season, but improved as the season progressed. But his old habit returned when he dropped one during a special teams drill.

Defensive back Sanders Commings got an interception when either quarterback Alex Smith threw a bad pass or wide receiver Donnie Avery ran the wrong route.

Minicamp participation

Tight end Travis Kelce (knee) and wide receiver Kyle Williams (knee) were on the field for a second straight day. They participated in the individual position drills, appearing to run without limitations, before going inside as part of their rehabilitation treatment.

Joining the trio was wide receiver Weston Dressler, who returned to individual position drills after missing the first day of minicamp with a hamstring injury.

Minicamp observations

• Wide receiver Dwayne Bowe made a full-extension leaping grab on a pass from quarterback Alex Smith during 11-on-11 drills. Bowe’s catch immediately drew a clearly audible “oohs” from his teammates on the sidelines.

• The Chiefs continue to shuffle the right side of the offensive line in one of the most fluid situations of the offseason. Rookie Zach Fulton saw time at right guard with the first-team offense during 11-on-11 drills for a second straight day. Obviously, that scenario is subject to change once the team reports to training camp. Rishaw Johnson also saw time at right guard on a rotating basis with Fulton.

• Another day and yet another attention-grabbing catch from tight end Demetrius Harris, who turned in a leaping catch from quarterback Tyler Bray. Free safety Sanders Commings was defending on the play.

• With Sean Smith absent with an illness, Marcus Cooper continued to fill in at right cornerback with the first team during 11-on-11. Ron Parker took Cooper’s spot at left cornerback, while Chris Owens defends the slot.

• Cornerback Ron Parker drew a flag from an official for pass interference on a play when he failed to turn his around to look for the football. He ran into wide receiver Donnie Avery during a pass from quarterback Alex Smith. Officials have been present during minicamp.

• Quarterback Tyler Bray had two memorable throws on Tuesday. The first went to tight end Demetrius Harris, and the other went to wide receiver Jerrell Jackson deep on the right sideline.

• Quarterback Chase Daniel threw a perfect deep pass during 9-on-7 drills when he found wide receiver Donnie Avery for a touchdown.

• Quarterback Aaron Murray continues to show confidence in his surgically repaired left knee. On one play during 11-on-11 drills and with the pocket collapsing, Murray tucked the ball and didn’t hesitate to take off down the right sideline.

• Quarterback Alex Smith found wide receiver Frankie Hammond deep during 11-on-11 drills for what would’ve been a touchdown in a real game. Hammond beat Marcus Cooper on the play.

• Free safety Sanders Coming intercepted an Alex Smith pass intended for Donnie Avery during 11-on-11 drills.

• Rookie outside linebacker Dee Ford ran with the first-team defense for a second straight day at Justin Houston’s spot.

Day two Chiefs mandatory minicamp report... here we go.

Water up! That was yelled over and over again by the different Chiefs coaches.
Day one of minicamp was hot, but day two? It seemed even hotter! No joke. For these I need a hat (bald head), sunscreen, and lots of water... but definitely a hat!

But despite the heat, the players have practiced hard.

WR Weston Dressler was back, he looked good. Fast and running full go. The good thing is Dressler's back, doesn't seem to be hampered by the hamstring.

Speaking of the WR's, there's good plays happening, not by a couple, but several. Yep, early yet... helmet and shorts, but fast(er) comes to mind. Hopefully more YAC this season too.

Dwayne Bowe moving very well, said it already, but saying it again. Chiefs fans might be upset that Kansas City didn't draft a new WR, but they "might" have a "new" guy in Bowe... which might be like having a new WR. Just saying.

#17 Donnie Avery is wowing me, yeah, really. He's fast, looks like a different guy than last year. Focused and "fighting" with every catch. I don't remember Avery leaping like I'm seeing with these early practices. No contact helps, but Avery's been bold going after every ball.

Overall it feels like the WR's are making more athletic catches before training camp. Consistent has been Bowe, Avery, Hemingway, and #85 Frankie (not Reggie) Hammond. #8 Albert Wilson is another that has nice potential. Wilson's like rookie RB De'Anthony Thomas to me. Both are super quick and confident with the ball, both have the moves. I think #15 A.J. Jenkins is proving something out there, he looks fresh, like a different player than last season.

I see competition. Lots of speed with the WR's.

TEs, what can I say. I like the group, I like what the Chiefs have... a lot. I'm trying to keep the enthusiasm in check. I get what time of the offseason it is, but brother and sister Chiefs fans. Hey, I think watching what the Chiefs have they have an edge with their TE's.

#87 Travis Kelce was practicing like Tuesday, left early as part of his treatment to get iced, but Kelce is moving without a hitch. #84 Sean McGrath ended practice with a knee injury. #47 Demetrius Harris had a few drops Wednesday, think the heat got to a few players, but Harris always finds a way to pull off at least one WOW play. He had one. A leaping, Superman, soaring through the air to haul in the football from #9 Tyler Bray catch. Hat off to Bray for a nice throw too. Harris is far from a clunky TE, the guy plays like a large, large WR. Kudos to #80 Anthony Fasano too, he's been playing well and looks 100 percent healthy. I'm excited about this group because of coach Andy Reid's emphasis on TE's with his offense. McGrath was basically it last year, shouldn't be the story this season.

With #25 I just stand amazed. He's so good, makes it look easy. He's running on fire right now. Charles lining up quite a bit as an extra WR. Saw Charles taking the time to help show rookie De'Anthony Thomas something while waiting.

Thomas the last two days has been getting the full attention of RB coach Eric Bieniemy, coach has been on Thomas case.
Bieniemy yelling at his backs... "Details people! Give me a run!"

At QB I like how comfortable #11 Alex Smith looks already. Last season it was the learn to crawl before you walk thing, a lot of short throws... dinks and dunks. I can tell that Reid is having the offense do more now, longer throws. Smith is pulling off anything Reid wants. Smith's throws look smooth, in the right spot, and the long stuff doesn't bother Smith. He's able to do it all. Smith looks good.

#7 Aaron Murray has a place. If Murray keeps learning like he has that spot will be right behind Smith. He's a smart QB, saw him point to his WR where to be while on the move to pass the ball, which he did. The biggest compliment I can give Murray is Reid and the NFL don't seem to big for him. Murray has leadership written all over him.

Bray I like, he has his good moments, but not as into Bray as I am Murray. I just think it won't take the Chiefs as long to get Murray where he needs to be.

On the offensive line #79 Donald Stephenson had a calf injury, but over these two days of minicamp Stephenson has been either on the left or right side. #72 Eric Fisher is in, but Chiefs using him sparingly still before training camp. Stephenson is getting lots of reps, Chiefs will need Stephenson to step up. Rookie #73 G (6-5... 315 pounds, age 22) Zach Fulton getting work these past two days with the first-team offense.

At CB there was no #21 Sean Smith, yesterday he missed the Chiefs said due to illness. #31 Marcus Cooper and #38 Ron Parker getting all the work with the first-team defense. I don't know, really don't. Without Sean Smith and CB Brandon Flowers it's hard to tell what the Chiefs got in the secondary. Parker has made plays, so has Cooper, but have to admit the Chiefs CB's are still a mystery. At least to me.

I do know that today defensive coordinator Bob Sutton took a personal interest in this group, watched them close. Even unleashed some four-letter words of encouragement. Rookie #23 Phillip Gaines left the practice field under his own power with a left ankle injury.

I think at training camp when it can get more physical that more will unfold for the CB's.

Overall the "team speed" is obvious to me. Everyone is moving around with understanding and lack of hesitation. The only ones that might pause is the rookies, but that's the way it's supposed to be. Last season all were learning something new. Looks like a better "team" effort right now.

At the end of practice it had looked like the players had grabbed the Gatorade and dumped it over Reid's head. Coach was definitely sweating.
Thursday it is until training camp... getting close!
-Steve

Chiefs Wrap-Up Mini-Camp & Off-Season
by Bob Gretz

The New York Giants, Washington Redskins and San Diego Chargers all saw their head coach cancel the third practice of their mini-camps on Thursday.

No such luck for the Chiefs, although Andy Reid did shorten up the final practice of the off-season. It was held indoors because of the wet conditions on the practice fields and other than a lengthy session of the 7-on-7 passing drill, there was not a lot of offense vs. defense in the session.

However, like his head coaching compatriots with the Giants, Redskins and Chargers, Reid was pleased with the work his coaching staff and team got done since the end of March.

“We added a few things on both sides of the ball and on special teams and I thought they handled it well,” Reid said. “There was some recall from (last) season and with the new things, they took it all in and worked hard on it. That’s a good feeling that we were able to add to our packages. All and all it was a good offseason.”

It was certainly different than a year ago, when Reid was in his first Kansas City season after 14 years in Philadelphia. Last May and June “every day was a new day” according to the head coach. Much more work was accomplished in this year’s off-season program. All in all, the Chiefs had a three-day rookie mini-camp, 10 OTA practices and the three seasons in the mini-camp. With that on-field work came hours of meetings and time in the weight room and with physical conditioning.

Reid has decided it’s been enough, and Thursday was the final day for everyone in the building, coaches and players. NFL rules allow the rookies to spend another two weeks at the team’s facility, where they can work individually with coaches. But Andy says they’ve seen enough.

“There isn’t much more we can do with them; they got plenty of reps to function in training camp,” Reid said.

So the coach sent them on their way with three standard coaching messages: stay out of trouble, don’t eat too much and keep working out.

Notes from the final mini-camp practice:

– Thursday morning the Chiefs released defensive end Chas Alecxih. The first-year player out of the University of Pittsburgh did not appear to fit with what Reid and the defensive staff were trying to do with the defensive line. That dropped the roster to 88 players and more than likely telegraphed roster additions, possibly from among the four tryout players that were part of the mini-camp.

– For the last practice there were 82 players on the indoor field working with the coaching staff. Injuries sidelined running back Joe McKnight (knee), offensive tackle Donald Stephenson (calf), inside linebacker Ben Johnson (hamstring), cornerback Phillip Gaines (ankle) and cornerback Sean Smith (illness). None of those injuries or maladies was considered serious.

– Also not working in Thursday’s practice was outside linebacker Justin Houston, continuing his boycott of the off-season program, apparently in hopes of finalizing a more lucrative contract extension. Since he’s under contract for 2014, the Chiefs can fine Houston for missing the mandatory camp. Absence from the third practice is a potential fine of $34,730 and that would bring his total fine if the Chiefs decide to clip him for missing three days to $69,455.

– Even though Thursday’s practice was the shortest of the three mini-camp workouts, the Chiefs showed their readiness to do something other than the touch football they are forced to play under NFL labor rules. Wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was knocked down after catching a pass in the end zone and appeared to land on a knee. Bowe quickly bounced up, but showed a bit of a limp as he walked off the field.

Chiefs put minicamp in the books
by Herbie Teope

Minicamp observations

• Unlike past days where media observed virtually two-plus hours of 11-on-11 and 9-on-7 drills, Thursday’s media observation early. The portion observed was mostly stretching, individual position drills and a 9-on-7 segment.

• Prior to the start of practice, the Chiefs announced the release of defensive tackle Chas Alecxih. The Chiefs’ offseason roster currently sits at 88 players, two shy of the league maximum allowed of 90.

• Quarterback Alex Smith found wide receiver Dwayne Bowe along on the right corner of the end zone during goal line work. Looked like a miscommunication between the defensive backs.

• Kickers Ryan Succop and Cairo Santos took turns booming kicks from beyond 40 yards, moving back in 5-yard increments. A lot of kicks, especially from Santos, hit the wall, which is roughly an additional 10 yards from the back of the end zone.

• Wide receiver Kyle Williams extended and hauled in a pass with his fingertips in stride during goal line work.
