Still a good start.

sounds fine to me. Wouldn't that be similar to looking at 2 out of 3 homers coming at home and drawing a conclusion from it? Or after 1 week saying 1 out of 1 homers came at home?

Yes.

Not enough of a sample size for any worry.

Yes, build from within, but our GM will need to supplement with strong trades and FA acquisitions. The latter two categories haven't been entirely disastrous, but the biggest (and most expensive) moves that he's made have been failures. And some of these failures defied good baseball sense from the onset.

If he ends up being the world's greatest drafter, I suppose he'll overcome a lot of errors, but that's damn near asking for the world.

The question, really though, is whether he makes better trades from a position of strength in the future. For the most part, he's been trying to convert chicken shit into chicken salad (or better). Nunez didn't have near the trade value he would have today. At the time, he was a decent reliever who most thought would be injury prone. Ram Ram had a very good year with us, but was awful the previous year. He traded Burgos at the right time. Howell made himself into a decent reliever, but he's been injured. The bottom line is that he hasn't been trading quality for quality. We'll see what he gets in return when he actually has something of value to trade away.

Royals acquire catcher Lucas May and RHP Elisaul Pimentel from the Dodgers for Scott Podsednik. May was USA Baseball catcher last year. 3 minutes ago via web

siberian khatru 07-28-2010 07:25 PM

May entered the season as the Dodgers' top catching prospect.

I like this deal alot, and the young pitcher has looked good too.

May should be starting soon imo 296/352/496 line in AAA

siberian khatru 07-28-2010 07:31 PM

John Sickels in December rated May the Dodgers' 17th best prospect:

Grade C: Made progress with the bat, but he was repeating the level and defense is still an issue with 20 passed balls in 65 games.

Pimental is a 21-year-old still in A ball, spent 3 YEARS in Rookie ball.

This is what Podsednik was worth. A midlevel prospect and a potential reliever. Plus, you open up the roster spot.

He's got pretty solid numbers in A ball. 90 innings, 71 hits, 96 Ks and an ERA in the 3's. I saw some video....tall, lanky righty. Looked good.

siberian khatru 07-28-2010 07:47 PM

I'd say this is a good start.

Reportedly there's interest in Bloomquist and Ankiel.

siberian khatru 07-28-2010 08:06 PM

DM on conference call http://wmc1.liquidcompass.cc/WHBAM

May gives us C depth we didnt' have before.

Pimental polished power pitcher, still developing, like him a lot, pitcher of month for June in Midwest League. Advanced for his ability. Trying to acquire as much young pitching as we can.
