Training Camp Report, Aug. 2: De’Anthony Thomas running, receiving; defense dominates
THE OFFENSE
The play of the day was Alex Smith’s deep corner route to Donnie Avery, who got behind cornerback Sean Smith, just two plays after Smith had intercepted a pass. The player of the day was rookie running back De’Anthony Thomas, who was featured as a runner and a receiver in all situations, be it when the offense was deep in its own territory or in the scoring zone. He caught a nice swing pass from Chase Daniel and took down the sidelines for a touchdown. Daniel also connected on a fade in the end zone to Thomas, who took a hard hit from fellow rookie cornerback Phillip Gaines. Third-team quarterback Tyler Bray zipped a touchdown pass to Fred Williams in the scoring zone. Rookie Zach Fulton, a sixth-round pick from Tennessee, was firmly ensconced at right guard with the No. 1 offense.
THE DEFENSE
The No. 1 defense dominated the start of practice, keeping the No. 1 offense from out of the end zone during scoring zone work. Cornerback Ron Parker broke up Smith’s pass intended for Avery; James Michael Johnson, getting work in the nickel defense, separated Jamaal Charles from the ball, and safety Husain Abduallah broke up passes to tight ends Travis Kelce and Anthony Fasano on consecutive plays and later intercepted a pass by Smith intended for Thomas. Defensive tackle Vance Walker stood up running back Knile Davis on a shovel pass, and Dominique Hamilton batted down a pass by Aaron Murray. Outside linebacker Tamba Hali displayed some coverage skills, defending a pass in the flat intended for Davis.
INJURY REPORT
Safety Eric Berry (heel) missed practice for the second straight day, and a bevy of players were out with hamstring injuries: wide receivers Junior Hemingway, A.J. Jenkins and Mark Harrison; running back Charcandrick West and defensive lineman Jermelle Cudjo. Cornerback Marcus Cooper (hamstring) and defensive lineman Kyle Love (ankle) were injured during practice and left the field.
Defensive end Mike Catapano (illness) missed his third straight day; and tight end Demetrius Harris was excused for a second straight day.

Days remaining until the Chiefs preseason opener against Cincinnati. Hitting someone else can’t get here soon enough.
SIDELINE VIEW
The Chiefs worked on rushing their field-goal unit on the field at the end of halves or at the end of the game.
Twice, quarterback Alex Smith stopped the clock with an incomplete pass, and rookie kicker Cairo Santos and the field-goal team came onto the field for a 50-yard plus tries.
On one occasion, punter-holder Dustin Colquitt lined up behind center, took the snap and threw the ball into the ground, stopping the clock.
Santos made two of the three field goal attempts.
