I wish to god there were more people out there keeping loaded weapons handy and were blowing away people who were committing heinous acts like this, because I do believe it would act as a damn good deterrent. But the sad truth is, for most people, there is no way to defend yourself from such an incident.

I suppose teaching them early would help, but you hear in news all the time about kids getting their hands on LEGAL weapons and making a mistake. It would really be a hard call as a parent...safety vs. children curiosity.

I cold be wrong but I believe that most parents (and people as a whole) are very protective of their children. Based upon that, I believe a parent would do anything in their power to protect their children and they wouldn't think twice about taking an action against a threat if given the opportunity.

Disclaimer: I'm not a parent but am curious as to how you protect your family in cases like this.
