He didn't get fired for drafting Mahomes. He could have had pretty much any QB yet took the one most unlike Smith. And he traded up for that guy. If everything else was the reason why Smith was being held back then they would have gone and got him more weapons earlier in the draft. Smith is limited because of himself, not the OLine, receivers, RBs, scheme, HC etc....

Smith told them he was retiring, so they drafted someone.
