Gee, what tipped you off? Was it the fact that his name is listed as "Not Frank Gore"?

Hmmm ... the NFL prefers peeing down your leg to offering you an umbrella.

They do admit that there was an offensive PI on the play that wasn't called ...

"While the ball is in the air, Tate can be seen shoving Green Bay cornerback Sam Shields to the ground. This should have been a penalty for offensive pass interference, which would have ended the game. It was not called and is not reviewable in instant replay."

However, they claim that the call was "simultaneous possession". I guess that happens when two different officials call it two different ways ...

"When the players hit the ground in the end zone, the officials determined that both Tate and Jennings had possession of the ball. Under the rule for simultaneous catch, the ball belongs to Tate, the offensive player. The result of the play was a touchdown."

And I was told that instant replay could not review possession on that play, but not so ...

"Replay Official Howard Slavin stopped the game for an instant replay review. The aspects of the play that were reviewable included if the ball hit the ground and who had possession of the ball. In the end zone, a ruling of a simultaneous catch is reviewable. That is not the case in the field of play, only in the end zone.

Referee Wayne Elliott determined that no indisputable visual evidence existed to overturn the call on the field, and as a result, the on-field ruling of touchdown stood. The NFL Officiating Department reviewed the video today and supports the decision not to overturn the on-field ruling following the instant replay review."

So they had an additional opportunity to get it right and failed. Just an amazing turn of events requiring the NFL PR machine to gear up. The release is here ...

I'm going to take a slightly different tack ...

First off, in real time and live, that could well have looked like simultaneous possession. I mean, you've got players reaching up, the ball arrives, and "bing, bang, boom", everybody's on the ground.

Second off, the officials didn't appear to be in the ideal position to make the call and ran in to observe the play as though it were a scrum. No call was made until they examined the players on the ground.

Given that, it could be that simultaneous possession was the right call. I mean, when you restrict the decision-making to the information the refs had at the time.

However, that does not excuse the fact that the PI was not called ... a blatant PI, by the way. And it doesn't explain how the two officials called the play completely differently.

Finally, instant replay had an opportunity to correct the call but chose to defer. That is the biggest screw up in this entire deal. They had plenty of angles. Maybe they really did chicken out.

This play makes me wish I didn't like football so much. It makes me wish I could walk away from the game forever and say, "**** you, NFL." That's what the league ****ing deserves on this.

I hope the NFL goes the way of boxing.

What a bunch of ****ing pussies.

It's pretty hopeless. They make it more and more difficult to be a fan each passing year. I don't think the NFL will be able to sustain their current attitude and retain Joe Fan for more than another decade or so. They're very fortunate fantasy football is perhaps saving the sport at this point.

That's how I felt with the regular officials. The scab refs at least add a lot of entertainment value. Think about it - would anyone at all be talking about the MNF game today if it weren't for the shitty calls? Instead, that's the only thing folks are talking about.

this x 1000

I was sick of the regulars thinking they were bigger than the game on the field...

So often an official had to take over just to the viewers knew he was on TV...

They ****ing wrecked just as many games as these guys are. People are just wanting to lynch mob these guys because the talking heads on ESPN are telling them too...

Games are lasting 4-4.5 hours with the replacements, and you're sick of the regulars? :spock:

Be honest. Are you Roger Goodell?

no one's talking about all the $$$ Roger's refs made Vegas last night. just the way Roger, Vegas, and the owners want it to be. We're getting trolled hard, and we'll all continue to support the league $$$ anyway, and they know it.

just like after the tuck rule, Polomalus's overturned INT against Indy when he rolled over twice, got up and started running, and the Ed Hoculi game. We're puppets on the strings of Roger Goodell's tennis shoe.

I know you're intent on ignoring the obvious, but I'll say it again: The NFL has never had a week of poor officiating like they had this past weekend. It has never happened before. You're cherry picking some games over a timeline of a decade or more.

how does it feel being a puppet on the string of Roger Goodell's tennis shoe?

How does it feel to not understand how a sports book operates?

Yup. It's true that the regular refs have their fair share of questionable calls. But the frequency of questionable calls occurring this season is at least 3-4 times higher than "normal."

The CBS pregame show (iirc) last Sunday had a chart that showed that, on average, the games were 4 minutes longer than the same time period in 2011 (first two weeks). I was surprised because they seemed longer.

That may change with this last weekends' games, though.

That would be awesome if every team around the league did that.

Maybe put the cheerleaders out there to do it in lingerie.
