Report: Tim Tebow wants more than Dez Bryant
Posted by Michael David Smith on July 28, 2010 4:23 PM ET
The Dallas Cowboys selected Dez Bryant with the 24th pick in the 2010 NFL draft, and the Denver Broncos selected Tim Tebow 25th. Ordinarily, that would mean Tebow should get paid a little bit less than Bryant.

But Tebow apparently wants more money than Bryant, and that's why he wasn't there when the Broncos' rookies reported to training camp today.

Ed Werder of ESPN reported on NFL Live that the holdup on Tebow's contract is the request from agent Jimmy Sexton that a premium be paid to Tebow because he's a quarterback. Sexton wants Tebow to get a bigger signing bonus, higher base salaries and more money overall than Bryant is getting from the Cowboys.

Werder reported that Tebow and the Broncos are close to getting the deal done, but in the mean time, coach Josh McDaniels has called Tebow and expressed disappointment that Tebow didn't report with the rest of the rookies.

"You're missing time and you can't afford to miss it," McDaniels told Tebow, according to Werder. "You're not going to get these snaps back."

Each time I looked at the fallen back to figure out which one it was, Ayers seemed to be standing over him.

When I mentioned to coach Josh McDaniels afterward that it looked as if the former first-round draft pick from Tennessee would have had a couple of sacks if they were permitted, he nodded.

"And he dominated the entire goal-line period," McDan- iels said. "He's a totally different player. We're proud of him, because we told him at the beginning of the offseason it's time for him to take a step from being a rookie to being the type of player we thought he could be.

"He had a great offseason program, and he started training camp well. We keep telling him, 'You started it well, now we've got to finish it. We've got to go into the season playing the same way.' But he's doing the physical things that we thought he could do and really dominating the edge."

Broncos extend Kyle Orton's contract through 2011

Well, now Brady Quinn is really screwed.

The Broncos announced a one-year contract extension for quarterback Kyle "Pro Bowl" Orton on Thursday night, which should keep him in Denver through 2011.

The move comes as a surprise, although we'll have to see the fine print before saying more about what it means for the short-term future of Tim Tebow. Orton taken charge of the team's offense has, by all accounts with a huge training camp effort.

"[Kyle's] leadership and knowledge of the offense have enabled him to have a solid offseason and training camp, and we are collectively looking forward to the 2010 season," coach Josh McDaniels said in a statement.

The move allows Tebow to mature at his own pace, while providing stability to the franchise should Orton play well this season. Orton is active in the player's union and understands this move was rare.

"I really enjoy playing for the Denver Broncos as well as being part of this organization and this community," Orton said. "Considering the labor environment, I'm aware of how difficult it was to get this deal done and am extremely appreciative of all of the hard work and support from Brian Xanders and Coach McDaniels during this process."

We think it's a smart move for both sides. Orton is positioned for a strong year, and would only get more expensive if he got closer to free agency. This buys McDaniels time to groom Tebow, but not too much time. If Aaron Rodgers and Kevin Kolb can wait, why can't Tebow?

Orton, for his part, knows how hard it is to get into the right situation. He's not going to find a better gig than playing under McDaniels.

UPDATE: Orton got $9 million in 2011 on the extension, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN and NFL Network's Jason La Canfora. They both report Orton will make just more than $12 million over two years.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...-through-2011/

Smart move by McDaniels. I have a feeling that resigning Kyle Orton after this season would have been very expensive. :)

Denver did better in the second quarter and was only down 2 points at half.

Detroit could be decent this year. I was surprised how much Vanden Bosch and Suh improved their DL and how much Stafford improved.

Sure if Clady, Champ Bailey, and Dumervil were playing they might not have looked as good but they were still impressive.

It is hard not to masturbate to images of Kyle Orton. This guy is a great mentor to Tebow. Remember when Montana mentored Young? Same thing. Kyle Orton is slowly, but surely passing the torch to Tebow. When it is all said and done, I would not be surprised if it turned out like this:

In terms of greatness.
1. Elway
2. Tebow
3. Orton

Josh McDaniels knows QBs and is overseeing this transition. I rub one out before I go to bed, knowing that the modern-day Bill Walsh is the Head Coach of my team.

I'm surprised that you sell your team so short. The Broncos showed us all a lot about their heart yesterday. I mean, there was a team, a Josh McDaniels team, whose starters were getting blown off their home field 13-0. But did they give up? No. Did they falter? No. They looked across the field and saw the Detroit Lions looking at them. They dug down DEEP & said, "We're just as good as these guys! We are every bit as good as the Detroit Lions!" And they fought, and they scratched & bit. And they almost tied the game. And now every rival AFCW fan is forced to admit something they were afraid to face - that the Broncos stand a very good chance of being just as good as the Detroit Lions this year. What we saw on the field yesterday proves to one & all that... maybe Denver doesn't have the talent of the Lions, maybe they are saddled with Josh McDaniels as their coach... but there is now every reason to believe that they have the guts and the gumption to go step-for-step, play-for-play with a team like the Detroit Lions. Look, folks, the Lions went 2-16 in 2009. Denver may not equal the record of Detroit, but they have the heart to come pretty damn close.

Why would anybody trade for Polumbus when Denver was going to cut him anyways. There was no doubt that Polumbus was good enough to make Detroit's roster.

Because Detroit has 1st dibs of waived players. A team cudda traded with Denver, or waited til Detroit picked him up & then traded with them. Like Seattle did. So Denver missed out on getting a pick cuz now Detroit has it.

Jarvis Green, DE, Broncos
Seriously!? Green signed a four-year, $20 million free agent deal with the Broncos in March. He was a key contributor for eight years as a versatile downlineman in New England’s 3-4 scheme. But in Denver, Green eventually lost his starting job to Ryan McBean; the Broncos must have felt he was too expensive to be a backup (Green wound up walking away $3.225 million). With Ty Warren out for the season, the Patriots may want to consider bringing Green back.
