Commentators are exactly right, the subs were poor. Zimmerman played well but Wright and Moore are poor.

We're moving on boys.

The U.S. definitely isn't suited to sit back and defend. They're best when they're attacking and using their speed and youth. I understand why they sat back the last 15 to 20 minutes but I felt they started playing passive too early in the second half. Dodged some bullets there toward the end.

dmahurin 11-29-2022 03:12 PM

Ive never really been into soccer until I saw someone recently compare it to basketball in the sense of passing around to try and set up plays and once I understood offsides and what to look for, it's kind of enjoyable.

New World Order 11-29-2022 03:13 PM

We can beat Netherlands.

It’s nice we don’t play a super heavyweight like Brazil or France

cj2wr 11-29-2022 03:14 PM

Is Gio dead?! If he doesn’t play Saturday then it’s def beef with coach. Netherlands is very beatable

Netherlands aren't quite what they used to be, but they're a consistent powerhouse and no joke. Even though they are ranked lower than England, they should prove to be considerably more formidable.

WilliamTheIrish 11-29-2022 03:16 PM

Keep Shaq Moore off the field please. He’s in over his head.

Hell Dempsey finally called him out

Said "I saw Moore raise his hand to say my bad moore than the number of passes he completed".

About time too.

Also, Haji Wright...slow AF and doesn't look like he hustles despite coming on late in the game. That dude should be up off the ground ASAP and sprinting back to help on D with the game on the line like that. Instead he casually gets up off the ground and gently jogs back to the center circle area. I know he's a CF, but come on man, you aren't effing Ronaldo out there

To me the two biggest things that hurt soccer are
1) Too many defenders and players on field. You want as many 1 on 1 opportunities as possible as it adds excitement.
2) Offsides penalties mitigate speed and explosion to try to score goals.

Both of those things mitigate the need for elite athleticism, and also limit goal scoring in the process. But my guess is soccer has not changed for decades.

Yeah, they still have a lot of quality players in that team, particularly defenders.

The USA is going to be overmatched in every game from here. It will take something special to advance any further. But I think advancing to the knockout stages is a realistic goal for where the USA is and we’ve done that.

It clearly doesn't need to be "fixed," but I feel like shrinking the playing field in which you can be offsides would make things a bit more exciting and open it up for more attacking.

England are ALWAYS overrated. They're kind of the San Diego Chargers of international soccer (minus the injury thing). They are always ranked high and always picked to be awesome and they end up being consistently mediocre.

We scratched out a goal against Iran and Wales, but the Dutch have top class defenders and we have very little attacking threat. I wouldn’t bet on the US scoring against them. Hopefully I’m wrong and they pull what would be a shocking upset, but I’m not expecting anything.

The game has actually changed a lot since then. IFAB publishes updates to the laws every year. There are changes every year. Sometimes just clarifying how the law is actually meant to be interpreted but often actual changes as well.

It would wreck the explosiveness of the game and it would turn into a stupid long ball contest. You'd get a forward or two camping out by the goal, which would then pull two defenders to the goal. That would happen on both sides and you'd get this massive emptied out field in between in which the need for speed and explosiveness in attack would be mitigated.

The only people in the world that think this particular aspect of the game needs changed are Americans that aren't regular viewers of the game.

Compressing the field would do the opposite. In soccer open space is how creativity and goals are created.

Make it more compact and goals will go down and penalties increased.

There are plenty of people around the world that don't like some of the antics that come with time wasting or flopping. Don't exaggerate to make a point. There are issues that even hardcore soccer fans don't like. You can even see it in the different styles of play from regions like North America and Europe(minus Italy) compared to Latin America.

Look it’s ok that you don’t like soccer. You sitting down and watching soccer 4 times doesn’t make you a good resource to make it better. It actually makes you a terrible person for that.

We don’t want soccer games to end in 14 to 9 scores.

People always say the last defender, but it's the second to last defender. The law is that there must be at least two opposing players between a player and the goal at the time a ball is played to him. This rule does not apply on throw ins or if the ball is played from the attacker's own half of the field.
