Pats draft by their board, not by need. The board is adjusted by need to some degree, of course, but the Pats don't sit there at 17 and throw out the board because they suddenly feel they need an OLB more than a OT. That isn't how they do it.

Which leads to pick that maddens the fan base, of course, but that's just how it is.

If the talent is rated mostly even and aren't at positions of specific needs for the teams below you, then they'll just wait for that talent to slide to them instead of moving up.

Trades are usually a result of a team feeling that the last guy or two at a position of need is about to be taken and won't slide to them, OR a SPECIFIC guy that they covet (i.e. is much more valuable than anyone else on the board) is about to go and they need to move up to get him because they like him alot more than whatever will be there when they get their pick.
