I wouldn't undo the greinke.trade either and I was one of his biggest supporters throughout.

I'd really like to know who the Nationals offered. I do love the Brewers deal, though, especially given the circumstances.

I don't think he'd be worth very much to the Royals down the road if he wasn't fully invested in the team. I actually wish they'd been able to pull the trigger in 2010 when his value was at its peak.

I agree. When you're building a championship contender, you need a few big-time starting pitchers. Greinke certainly fits that bill, and had he remained committed to Kansas City and the process we're in, I would have kept him. But it's hard to build around a player who not only wasn't going to stay but also was starting to become a distraction.

I'm thrilled with Escobar, Jeffress, and optimistic about Cain/Odorizzi, but a content Greinke would have been hard to part with no matter what the compensation.

Indeed. Very good point.

Did anyone catch the segment that Baseball Tonight did on the Royals and Indians and who has the better chance of competing for the division?

The two analysts were literally slobbering over the Indians and how "great" they are. Looks like there's still more work to be done before the Royals gain even a little bit of respect.

Honestly, does anybody really think the whole season is going to play out like the 10-4 start has? I mean, they're currently 4th in runs, 4th in batting average, 5th in obp, 9th in slugging - as a team. That's the only way they're surviving their starting pitching right now. Gordon's got a .963 ops right now and Butler's is 1.052 (Betamit's is 1.087). They're both hitting .373. Frenchy, who we all wanted run out of town a month ago, is batting .327, with a .848 ops.

The other shoe is eventually going to drop. It has to...

I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts, and I think/hope it's a sign of the future, but at the same time I'm tempering my enthusiasm and trying to keep myself grounded in the reality that this is a team that's a couple of years away, no matter what their record is right now.

Didn't catch it but it doesn't surprise me. Doesn't bother me really either. We didn't even expect ourselves to be much good. Melky and Francour plus Avilies/Betemit weren't really suppossed to be much more than placeholders for future minor leaguers. The fact that they're all pulling their weight is a nice surprise. We'll see if it lasts.

Not to mention the pitching staff looked atrocious going in. They're all over-achieving.

While I agree with pretty much everything you said, I don't think the other show HAS TO drop necessarily. These guys aren't highly touted stars but they are professionals who are paid to win and sometimes a certain mixture of players just find a comfort zone together and play well. It could and chances are it will likely end.... but I don't think it has to. Winning breeds confidence. Couple that with guys playing with a chip on their shoulders and saying "we'll show 'em" and you just never know what can happen.

I agree, I expect the Royals and Indians to be 75 win teams at best. It was just amazing to me how one guy was going on about how great their offense was and how it was so much better than the Royals. The other went on to talk about the Indians pitching, but I didn't pay much attention to it.

In the end, it was really an Indians segment.

Silock 04-17-2011 12:26 AM

It isn't about the offense.

We just don't have the pitching depth for a long-term run. It's nice right now, though.

I know Cleveland has a stud catcher and Grady Sizemore is coming back from injury but beyond that I really don't know what they have. I imagine if we can win they can too.

I think if they keep winning, at best they're the 2010 Chiefs. The weaknesses that they have (namely starting pitching) are the ones that will cost them when the games count.

Either way, it's mid-april. They have 148 games left to play. And odds are they aren't going to end up going 115-47...

TOGETHER WE CAN!!!

Heh.

No I doubt they'll do that well... but I'm going to enjoy being over .500 for as long as it lasts... and once it doesn't anymore I'll enjoy watching the kids get some experience and hope for the future.
